Michigan Poetry Out Loud opportunities for high school students
by Katie Wittenauer 15 Oct '26

15 Oct '26

Hello from Michigan Humanities! Earlier this fall, we opened registration for our state’s Poetry Out Loud program<https://www.michiganhumanities.org/poetry-out-loud/>. Poetry Out Loud is a national arts education program that lifts poetry off the page by offering free educational materials and a recitation competition for high school students across the country. If your library is interested in learning more about program partnership, please let me know and I can send you the Zoom details for our upcoming program kick-off meeting at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20. We often hear from libraries who serve high school students or collaborate with local schools about their interest in the program. I’d love to share more details with you one-on-one or via next week’s meeting. The 2026–27 Poetry Out Loud season marks the 22nd year of this statewide, free program. Last year, more than 3,000 students and 75 teachers participated across Michigan. All types of high schools are welcome to participate, including public, private, parochial, independent, charter and homeschool. Non-school organizations, such as after school clubs, libraries, or nonprofit organizations, may partner as well. Online registration is open until December 4, 2026. I’ve attached a press release so that you can learn more about the program and our statewide partnership with the Michigan Arts and Culture Council that makes Michigan Poetry Out Loud possible. I look forward to talking with you soon, Katie Katie Wittenauer (she/her) Director of Programs | kwittenauer(a)mihumanities.org<mailto:kwittenauer@mihumanities.org> | LinkedIn<https://www.linkedin.com/in/katiewittenauer/> Connecting, Sharing, Growing [A blue and white badge with gold ribbon Description automatically generated] Michigan Humanities PO Box 91 Marshall, MI 49068 517-372-7770, ext. 294 Website<http://michiganhumanities.org/> | Facebook<https://www.facebook.com/MichiganHumanities> | Instagram<https://www.instagram.com/mihumanities/?hl=en> Mission: Bringing people together through stories, histories, cultures, and conversations.

Building Community-Based Summers: Tri-State In-Person Workshops
by Lancaster, Cathy (MDE) 15 Oct '26

15 Oct '26

Building Community-Based Summers: Tri-State In-Person Workshops * Thursday, November 5, 2026 - from 9:30 am - 4:30 pm at the Main Library, Toledo-Lucas County Public Library, 325 N. Michigan St, Toledo, Ohio. Free Parking is available. Registration: https://forms.gle/H1v37vAk1wzPT5W59 * Thursday, November 19, 2026 - from 9:30 am - 4:30 pm at the Meijer Branch, Jackson District Library, 2699 Airport Rd., Jackson, MI 49202. Free parking is available. Registration: https://forms.gle/wUsExGchA63cWhxo6 Both workshops will cover the same BCBS content; register for the date and location of your choice. Registration is free. Description: Over the last few years public libraries in Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio have participated in cohorts of the Building Community-Based Summers (BCBS) national IMLS project. Through learning sessions and activities, BCBS helps libraries develop new thinking and strategies about summer services in four key areas: Rethinking Internal Systems, Fostering a Culture of Learning, Centering Community, and Reflecting Continuously about summer services and their impact. These BCBS Workshops are being offered to any IN, MI, and OH library workers who are interested in evaluating and reassessing their summer services. Attendees will participate in a variety of activities to help them view their summer services through fresh eyes at a critical time of the year as they plan for next summer. The facilitators will share a brief history and background about BCBS for those unfamiliar with the project, and details for those who wish to be trained more deeply regarding the BCBS learning topics and strategies. The workshops will also include much time for discussion and sharing, to learn what libraries are planning to better reach all their communities and to provide ideas and strategies to address challenges. Who should register? To support your ability to implement BCBS strategies in your community, we highly encourage 2 or more staff members from your library or system to register and attend the workshop. Staff working in any department, especially those with a focus on public programming, are welcome to attend. Facilitators: Bringing extensive experience with BCBS, facilitators Cathy Lancaster (Library of Michigan), Katy Hite (State Library of Ohio), Janet Ingraham Dwyer (State Library of Ohio), and Beth Yates (Indiana State Library), will offer key insights. They will discuss how applying BCBS framework processes enables libraries to design more adaptive summer services and programs tailored to local needs and community perspectives. Learning Objectives - Participants will be able to: * Explain briefly the history of the Building Community- Based Summers (BCBS) project and its four key principles * Identify their library organization’s “why” of summer services * Name examples of strategies that other libraries have implemented to build greater community involvement into their summer services * Identify one or two action steps your library could take to help build more community voice into your summer services Feel free to reach out to me directly with any questions. by Wambaugh, Stephanie (LEO) 15 Oct '26

It’s Cybersecurity Awareness Month: The Cyber Library Case
by Quick, Shauna (MDE) 14 Oct '26

14 Oct '26

Hello! The next Cybersecurity Awareness Month mini-game is ready! Week 1: https://quokka-tfvq2m.my.canva.site/ Week 2: https://quokka-tfvq2m.my.canva.site/library-cybersecurity-hidden-puzzle-wee… October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month; an annual nationwide initiative focused on promoting safer online practices and increasing awareness of digital threats. For libraries, cybersecurity is especially important: staff handle sensitive patron information, rely on networked systems every day, and play a key role in modeling safe digital behavior for the community. Strengthening cybersecurity habits helps protect both library operations and the communities we serve. I’m excited to share a series of short, interactive mini‑games created in Canva using Canva’s AI tools, with support from use of Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini, and Anthropic Claude. Each week in October, I’ll send a new email with a direct link to that week’s game. Feel free to share the link with staff internally. Please note: the games will only be available through November 30. I hope these games add a little fun to your October while giving your cybersecurity skills a quick boost.
