MiALA 2027 Annual Conference Call for Presentations Now Open
by Thad Dickinson 13 Oct '26

13 Oct '26

Academic libraries are facing a time of uncertainty and complex challenges, and how we choose to respond will influence what lies ahead. "Radical Trust: Cultivating the Future Together" invites us to consider trust as a deliberate choice in shaping our future: trusting our colleagues, communities, and shared capacity to adapt, collaborate, and grow. Cultivating the future requires intention, and this year’s conference will acknowledge the realities academic libraries face while celebrating the relationships, partnerships, and commitments that sustain our work. The future is not something that happens to us; it is something we can create together through the courageous and radical act of trusting one another. The Michigan Academic Library Association (MiALA) invites you to submit a presentation proposal for the conference, which will be held May 16-18, 2027, at the Morris Lawrence Conference Building on the campus of Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor, MI. Participation from librarians, library staff, LIS students, and administrators from all types of academic libraries is welcomed. MiALA membership is not required to submit a proposal. You are encouraged to share research, casestudies, practical strategies, lessons learned, and bold ideas that help us cultivate the future together. We seek proposals that explore trust, collaboration, growth, resilience, stewardship, and collective action in academic libraries; however, proposals relevant to any aspect of academic libraries are welcome. We are currently accepting proposals for the following presentation formats: - Presentations, panels, or moderated discussion sessions (45 min.) - Interactive workshops (105 min.) - Lightning Talks (10 min.) Note: Poster presentation proposals will open in early December. If you have a topic you would like to explore and are looking for collaborators, consider adding your session idea to the Breakout Session Collaboration spreadsheet (https://www.memberleap.com/ct.php?lid=414065825&mm=274534679761) The spreadsheet is not monitored by MiALA or the Conference Planning Committee and is not part of the official submission process. Please submit your presentation proposal using the application form by January 10, 2027: https://www.memberleap.com/members/forms/form.php?fid=9234333 Questions about the conference can be sent to conference(a)miala.org. Letting patrons using phone
by Christina Markowski 13 Oct '26

13 Oct '26

Good afternoon, We were having issues with patrons using the public facing phone to make quick calls. It was getting to where one patron was using it to solicit, threaten, and sell drugs. Does anyone have a policy on patrons using phones? Right now we have dialed it down to calling dial-a-ride and calling a taxi only. Any advice would be appreciated! Thank you, Tina Markowski (she/her) Director Alpena County George N. Fletcher Public Library (989) 356-6188 X16 *Bookworm? Please, I'm a Book Dragon. *

Program Recommendation: Understanding Typical vs. Not Typical Aging
by Bellaire Public Library Director 13 Oct '26

13 Oct '26

Hi everyone! I wanted to pass along a program recommendation after hosting *Understanding Typical vs. Not Typical Aging* at Bellaire Public Library. We had a positive experience with Debbie Smith and Accelerate The Care, and I thought other libraries might be interested in offering this program to their communities. The workshop explored the differences between typical aging and dementia, how dementia can affect behavior, and ways to better understand and support individuals living with dementia. The hands-on approach made the information accessible and gave participants a helpful perspective they can carry into their everyday lives. I would highly recommend this program to other libraries and community organizations looking to offer meaningful education and support around dementia and caregiving. Debbie was knowledgeable, approachable, and a wonderful resource for our community. A special thank-you to Debbie Smith, Positive Approach to Care Certified Trainer, and Accelerate The Care for sharing their expertise with us! We look forward to connecting with them again for future programming. I hope this is helpful to anyone looking for a great program to bring to their community! Hi Bob, The Library of Michigan hosts libraries' digital collections. I have not contacted them about this, though I need to, so I don't know all the particulars. The link is on their page, https://www.michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan/libraries/digitization, under Services Available to Libraries: * Digital Collections Hosting - Libraries and cultural heritage institutions that want their digitized collections hosted on the Library of Michigan's digital platform can submit a digital hosting request form [1] - the intake form the Library of Michigan uses to start a hosting request. Hope that helps, -- _Susan Riegler_ Susan Riegler, Director Alden District Library 231/331-4318 Message: 11 Date: Mon, 12 Oct 2026 17:38:52 -0400 From: Bob Barringer <director(a)blissfieldlibrary.org> Subject: [Michlib-l] Re: Using Google Drive to provide public access to documents To: "Bob Barringer" <director(a)blissfieldlibrary.org> Cc: michlib-l <michlib-l(a)liblists.org> Message-ID: <1a1320de10f.525dc353353438.1646425223919512613(a)blissfieldlibrary.org> Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="----=_Part_1175159_371079332.1791841132816" Just to be clear: I want the dcouments to be searchable within the documents, not necessarily showing up on Google searches, although that is fine, as well. Does anyone have any experience using Google Drive to provide public access to pdf files? We want to make our both our local newspaper back issues and volumes of our local high school yearbook available via our website. Our webhost does not want these documents stored on its server, but we can store them elsewhere and provide a link to the documents from the website. We have enough space on DropBox, but the documents load very slowly and don't appear to be searchable in any way (the docuements are ocr-scanned searchable pdfs). I'm loading 150 years, a year per document, of a weekly newspaper and the entire collection is less that 100 GB, so the files are not that big. 6-700 mb on average. I am looking into Google Drive, which seems reasonably-priced, but I have no experience with it at all. i am looking to provide read-only acess to anyone connecting with the link on the website. Will my documents be searchable? Might I expect Google Drive to be faster than DropBox? Any other suggestions on how I make this dream o' mine work? Thanks in advance (a pun of sorts--or close enouogh to one-- because the local newspaper is called The Advance).
