MeL Minute: Enjoy a New MeL eResource! Gale Presents: National Geographic Virtual Library

Gale Presents: National Geographic Virtual Library<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=n…> includes 1,536 issues of National Geographic beginning with its inaugural issue from October 1888 and running through 2020. Patrons can access full-text articles and images that include some of the most iconic content ever published. Famous Issues One of the most recognized National Geographic covers is a photo of an Afghan girl, Sharbat Gula (June 1985). It accompanied a story about Afghani refugees after the Soviet invasion of 1979. Years later, the photographer and a team from National Geographic went back in search of the girl who became famous around the world. She again graced the cover in April of 2002 along with a story of what had become of her in the intervening years. The December 1969 issue features another famous cover that focuses on an event that captured the attention of the world: the moon landing. This cover has a photograph of Buzz Aldrin on the surface of the moon, and the accompanying article is a transcript of the communications between the three astronauts of Apollo 11 and the folks on the ground in Houston. Places Issues that have in-depth coverage of countries, continents, and National Parks allow us to travel without ever leaving home. Dedicated to dispelling myths about Africa, the September 2005 issue provides a fresh perspective about countries throughout the continent that many people have not visited. You can also visit Cuba (November 2012), China (May 2008), and Iran (July 1999), viewing snapshots in time of those countries. National Park issues include Yellowstone (August 2009), Yosemite (May 2011), and Sequoia (December 2012). Scientific Discoveries When scientific breakthroughs happen, National Geographic often covers them in ways that help readers better understand complex information. Secrets of the Gene (October 1999) describes research that might cure diseases but also bring ethical questions. The July 2005 issue included an article about stem cells and how scientific discoveries can also become political. Additional scientific issues include Healing the Heart (February 2007), The New Science of the Teenage Brain (October 2011), and The Future of Medicine (January 2019). Explore this new eResource to see additional topics such as animals, historical events, and the environment. Storing back issues of periodicals can take up space, staff time, and funds. The Library District Manager has responsibilities including: · Manages (plans, organizes, directs) daily operations of multiple library facilities: Egelston Branch, Muskegon Township Branch, Ravenna Branch (view location information at www.madl.org) · Implements and monitors policies and procedures. · Collaborates with coworkers on appropriate services, developing outreach strategies and materials to engage with the community. · Professionally executes or facilitates services in a safe and responsible way. · Builds and manages a portfolio of community partnerships, including schools, neighborhood associations, and other groups for the purpose of expanding library services into the community as well developing new programs through innovative connections to the assets of community partners. · Organizes and hosts public events and works as part of a team to create and facilitate the agenda in a range of settings or locations. · Communicates and builds strong community bonds by working with local community leaders. · Selects and hires/contracts with vendors, authors, or other outside agencies to assist with programs or services. · Attends local municipal meetings representing MADL. · Works with the Library Board and Friends of the Library groups as necessary. · Acts as liaison with township maintenance/ supervisors and the library administrative staff to assure proper building maintenance and operation. · Develops, writes, or coordinates grant functions, stipends, and financial aid opportunities. · Develops and implements goals, programs, and procedures for the branch(es), coordinates activities and essential tasks. · Recruits and interviews for open staff positions. · Manages and supervises staff and volunteers in day-to-day activities, including scheduling, training, disciplining, and conducting performance evaluations. · Responds to requests or refers the questions to Administration when appropriate. · Resolves complaints and requests with discretion and good judgement in keeping with MADL policies. · Markets the library by developing and/or assisting with public service-oriented programming and press interviews. · Prepares and maintains required reports and records using approved formats in a timely fashion. · Actively participates in ensuring the Code of Conduct and Library Privacy Act is followed. · Participates in general functions for library cleanliness and appearance. · Customer service via phone or in-person. · Incumbents holding MLIS professional degrees may also participate in collection development or other appropriate library services or functions. Tech Alert: Latest Windows Update Breaks File and Printer Sharing

Good morning library land, I am sharing with you all a tech alert: It has been determined that the latest update to Windows 11 version 24H2 KB5065426 has broken file and printer sharing between computers. [ https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/5551014/kb5065426-updat… | https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/5551014/kb5065426-updat… ] When attempting to manually connect file and/or printer sharing, there are error messages stating that the login to the share is incorrect even if the credentials are correctly entered. I have tested and confirmed that a temporary solution to this issue is to uninstall this latest update. You can run this command in Powershell as Administrator: wusa /uninstall /kb:5065426 Once you restart the affected computer, the update will uninstall and file and printer sharing will work once again. I have paused updates on the affected computers for now. This is unfortunately only a temporary solution because we don't want to leave computers behind on security updates for too long, the permanent fix will be when Microsoft patches this issue. There is a report within that Microsoft thread attached above that Windows 10 is seeing similar issues. If you are still using Windows 10, you can try running the same command but replacing the kb number with the latest Windows 10 security update's kb. This issue effects environments where files and/or printers are shared from one computer to other computers, so if you are not seeing any errors, it should be safe to disregard this message.
