Duggan, Wayne State University Imagine a Cinderella who kills her stepmother or decapitates an ogress or triumphantly splashes her sisters with mud on her way to trying on the famed slipper. These are not the first images that come to mind when we think of Cinderella tales in our post-Disney world. But all of these variants of the Cinderella story competed with one another for generations. One 17th century French author, Marie-Catherine d'Aulnoy, produced a variant-"Finette-Cendron" or "Finette-Cinders"-that not only was frequently reprinted in France, England, and Germany, but also added to oral traditions in these countries as well as in the United States and Czechoslovakia, eventually serving as inspiration for the celebrated 1973 German-Czech film, Three Hazelnuts [Wishes] for Cinderella. This talk will explore the history and legacies of d'Aulnoy's Cinderella tale, whose heroine proves much more enterprising than that of Charles Perrault or Disney. Hello Michlib! Last night BPL hosted a book talk for *Classic Michigan Food & Drinks: The Stories Behind the Brands. *Authors Gail Offen & Jon Milan were great! They are personable and engaging, eliciting laughs and comments from the audience. The event was very nicely attended with many folks staying after to chat or buy a copy of one of Gail & Jon's books. If you are looking for a fun yet informative program that dishes on some of Michigan's wonderful foods, this is it! Their fee was $150.00 (not sure if they charge mileage) and contact info is below. JOB TITLE: Circulation Clerk Hours: 20-30 hours per week that includes some afternoons/evenings and Saturdays. Starting Wage range: $12-14.00 per hour. GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION: This is a customer service position which includes clerical work performing routine tasks following established library procedures. SUPERVISION: Works under the general direction and supervision of the Library Director. DUTIES INCLUDE BUT NOT LIMITED TO: Performs routine circulation operations, including checkout, check-in, over-dues and bills, fine and fee collections, patron registration, maintenance of patron records, processing Inter-Libraryand Mel-cat holds, processing circulation reports. Shelves materials, reads shelves, and straightens areas daily as necessary. Answers the telephone in a polite and professional manner; makes appropriate referrals. Responsible for handling financial transactions via cash register or Square. Aids patrons in use of copy and fax machine, with computers and technology, and library apps. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: Enjoys helping others of all ages to use library resources. Able to work independently and with others. Takes initiative to execute work responsibilities. Ability to comprehend and follow instructions in verbal or written form. Has good customer service and skills. Strong oral and written communication skills. Able to work with computers, office equipment, and graphic software. Performs shelf checks for overdue materials prior to mailing patron notices. Provides reader’s advisory and reference help to patrons as needed. Assists patrons in use of library facility by directing them to appropriate areas and staff. Maintains confidentiality of all patron records and transactions. Creates monthly and theme-related displays to highlight Library materials as directed. Other duties as assigned. This position works from the District Administrative Headquarters, Webster Memorial Library, in Decatur, MI. Decatur is situated between Kalamazoo and the lakeshore region of southwest Michigan. Webster Memorial Library is both a functioning branch serving the Decatur community, and the administrative headquarters of the Library District, serving as the hub of the District’s centralized functions such as administration, interlibrary loan, technical services, local history, and interbranch delivery services. The District Program, PR & Technology Instruction Coordinator is a position of responsibility, requiring a person willing to perform a wide variety of duties. The District Program, PR & Technology Instruction Coordinator must have an understanding of youth services and be effective in developing good public relationships. The District Program, PR & Technology Instruction Coordinator serves on a full-time basis, which includes some evening and Saturday hours. These hours should reflect the best interests of the Library District. The District Program, PR & Technology Instruction Coordinator is responsible to the Executive Director or other personnel as assigned. Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: MLIS or its equivalent from an accredited library school. Minimum of 3 three years of public library experience working in youth services. The ability to train staff in youth services programming fundamentals & best practices. Intermediate skill with standard library tasks and technology including ILS systems, PC technology, standard software packages such as Microsoft Office, online platforms such as Google Workspace, Libby, and hoopla. Familiarity with current and emerging social media platforms. The ability to self-acquire new abilities in the use of technology platforms and transmit those skills to others. Ability to work some evening and weekend hours Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with associates, supervisors, local officials, and the public. Ability to read fine print with or without corrective lenses, to lift up to 30 pounds, bend, twist, crouch, kneel and refile library materials up to 90 inches in height. CSLP has created a survey so they can better assess the usefulness of the materials offered by the program on a national level to better serve you, the CSLP membership! All public libraries in Michigan are CSLP members thanks to the Library of Michigan with support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
