Library Director – Kenosha Public Library (WI) The Kenosha Public Library<https://mykpl.info/> (WI) nine-member governing Board of Trustees seeks a consensus-building and community-oriented leader to be the organization’s next Library Director. This individual will guide the Kenosha Public Library (KPL) and the Kenosha County Library System (KCLS) into the future by continuing to embrace a diverse and growing population and offering relevant and first-rate spaces, collections, programs, and services. Building upon a solid history of community engagement, the new director will be an advocate for intellectual freedom and open access to information. They will also be a champion for ensuring our libraries remain a welcoming, safe and supportive environment for all members of the community, regardless of background or socioeconomic status. Kenosha Public Library serves approximately four neighborhood locations, has two outreach vehicles, and a new children’s library that opened its doors in July 2024. With a team of 84 dedicated staff, KPL serves as the resource library for the Kenosha County Library System. KCLS comprises KPL and Community Library, which has two locations in Salem Lakes and Twin Lakes. Kenosha is a city rich in history and community spirit, nestled in the southeastern corner of Wisconsin along the shores of Lake Michigan. With a population of nearly 100,000, it is the fourth largest city in Wisconsin. What stands out about Kenosha is the uniqueness of the city: locally owned multigenerational businesses and restaurants located in a vibrant downtown, electric streetcars, lighthouses, and a castle full of cheese<https://www.marscheese.com/>. Residents enjoy an incredible array of outdoor amenities—five lakefront beaches, 130 miles of bike trails, and over 1,000 acres of park and conservation sites throughout the city. Kenosha is also home to a burgeoning arts district, several award-winning museums, and a plethora of community festivals and celebrations. The city is a short drive to larger metropolitan areas such as Milwaukee, Madison, and Chicago. Responsibilities: Reporting to the Library Board of Trustees, the Library Director serves as the Chief Executive Officer for both the Kenosha Public Library and the Kenosha County Library System. This leadership role involves strategic planning, organization, direction, and evaluation of all library functions, operations, and activities. In collaboration with the library board, the director is responsible for creating and implementing an operating plan, budget, and procedures to ensure quality patron service, community relations, and equitable access to library resources for all residents. With significant autonomy, the director administers library programs and policies approved by the board to achieve short- and long-term goals aligned with the organization’s Mission and Vision Statement. Qualifications: A master’s degree in library and information science from an ALA-accredited college or university and Grade 1 Wisconsin Library Certificate<https://dpi.wi.gov/libraries/public-libraries/governance-administration/dir…> eligibility is required. Five years of progressively responsible full-time experience in public libraries, including at least three years of recent management experience in a public library is also required. Strong knowledge of all functional areas of a public library, including library management, budget management, policy development and implementation, strategic planning, and problem analysis and resolution, and experience in change management is preferred. Compensation: The hiring salary range is $117,000 – $127,000 (with placement negotiable dependent on experience and qualifications) and an excellent fringe benefits package. MI Indoor Air Ventilation Program Informational session today! - Opportunity for libraries to get FREE air purifiers and filters

Good morning! Sharing information about an opportunity for free air purifiers and replacement filters that has been opened up to public libraries. The MI Indoor Air Ventilation program has been offering free air purifiers and replacement filters to K-12 schools, shelters, juvenile justice centers and long-term care facilities. They are now extending the program to public libraries. They will be hosting an informational session today at 2:00 PM (all details and link in the attached document, flier info copied below) This program is available to ALL public libraries!! MDHHS has teamed up with a leading supplier of safety and prevention equipment, and a manufacturer of portable air cleaning systems, to serve our partners in the state of Michigan. The perspective candidate will have a high school diploma; any college is a plus. Library experience will also be a plus. This position entails working with the public. Successful completion of a 90-day probationary period. Good oral and writing skills. Good computer, keyboarding, word processing, database, internet and technology skills a must. Be physically able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation. Able to count money and use basic cash register functions. We are the third largest library system in Michigan and an award-winning system of 19 branches. We are in the lower peninsula and have over 120 employees. GDL offers full time employees a Health Care Savings Program (HCSP), 403(b), 401(a) and 457 Supplemental Savings. Responsibilities include: Manage the operations of the branch and meet the needs of our patrons. Supervise staff assigned to the branch and keep them updated with new procedures. Answer reference questions and provide adequate information to patrons. Partner with area schools and other agencies to promote collections and services offered to children and young adults. Build strong community bonds by working with community leaders. Handle patron complaints with good judgment. Selecting and ordering books for the branch. Market the library by developing and/or assisting with public service-oriented programming. Prepare required reports to the Branch Operations Manager monthly. Lifelong learner with an interest in new library services and trends. Requirements for the position include: Master's Degree in Library or Information Science from an American Library Association accredited library school. Supreme Court Clarifies Wage, Sick Time Act Effect Dates & Rates

Hello! Yesterday (September 19th), The Supreme Court Issued an order clarifying details relating to the reinstated Wage Act. These are clarifications in response to requests submitted by the MI Dept of Treasury and others. Note that the opinion confirms $12.48 as a likely minimum wage amount for February 2025. In an order issued today, the high court majority in Mothering Justice v. Attorney General (MSC Docket No. 165325) noted the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity's and the Department of Treasury's calculations for a new minimum wage phase in plan were on track. The departments had asked for clarification on multiple issues, arguing there were different ways to calculate the inflation adjustment for the minimum wage and that the court missed a phase-in percentage on the tipped wage increase (See Gongwer Michigan Report, August 22, 2024<https://www.gongwer.com/news/index.cfm?article_id=631660101>). Originally, the agencies had asked for the court to weigh in by September 15, but that date lapsed with no response. The justices were not bound to that deadline, however, and today issued clarifications of key footnotes in the opinion initially authored by Justice Elizabeth Welch. Treasury is required to submit its wage increase figures by November 1. Key in the order is how to calculate the inflation adjustment for the new minimum wage. The state presented several options but said Treasury believed the court intended for it to begin calculating inflation on January 1, 2019, through July 31, when the adopt and amend ruling was issued. The department's calculations had the minimum wage increases at $12.48 in 2025, $13.29 in 2026, $14.16 in 2027 and $14.97 in 2028. As to whether the state correctly interpreted the court's remedy in respect to inflation, the order said the state was correct. "The defendants interpret the opinion as requiring that they 'bring the statutory minimum wages in Section 4(1) current to July 31, 2024, through an inflationary catch-up beginning January 1, 2019.' The defendants are correct," the order said. Justice Elizabeth Welch wrote a concurring opinion detailing where the drafting confusion may have arisen, while Justice Brian Zahra wrote a dissenting opinion joined by Justice David Viviano. The state in its filing also noted the original opinion in outlining the phase-in for the tipped wage skipped from 80 percent of the regular minimum wage in 2028 to 100 percent in 2029. The law, however, includes a 90 percent phase in. The court agreed and said the tipped wage in fact would reach 100 percent of the regular minimum wage in 2030 rather than 2029 as it first wrote. Greetings, everyone! We are in the process of evaluating a large collection of books pertaining to state or local history, most uncatalogued, that have been living in our basement storage. We also have a small local history room where some of these will eventually be placed. My question: To what extent do you physically process older books? How do you evaluate "older", if these receive specific treatment?
