The Manager oversees the Clarke's highly regarded microfilm and digital services, external contracts and internal projects, and the staff team that carries out this work. On Saturday, September 21 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at the Detroit Public Library (5201 Woodward) the library will host a lively discussion on Clara Stanton Jones and her groundbreaking achievements at the Detroit Public Library. Author Dr. Renate Chancellor will discuss her new book, Clara Stanton Jones: Breaking the Glass Ceiling in the Detroit Public Library. The biography tells the story of Clara Stanton Jones, the first woman to direct a major public library system in the United States, and also the first African American president of the American Library Association. Mrs. Jones served as the Director of the Detroit Public Library from 1970 – 1978. "Clara Stanton Jones was deeply committed to serving the people of Detroit by providing them accessible library services as well as relevant programming,” according to Executive Director of the Detroit Public Library Jo Anne Mondowney.” “Mrs. Jones created TIP (The Information Place), an innovative community referral service that was replicated in libraries throughout the country. Dr. Chancellor’s biography is an important resource that captures Mrs. Jones’ rich legacy, and her leadership role at DPL and in the library world." Appearing in conversation with Dr. Chancellor will be Karen Lemmons, a retired Detroit Public Schools Community District librarian who has been actively involved with the American Association of School Librarians and the Young Adult Library Services Association. Clarke Speaker Series Event: Christopher Paul Curtis

Please join us for the annual Burgess Lecture featuring award-winning author, Christopher Paul Curtis, on Tuesday, September 24th, at 7 p.m. in the Opperman Auditorium, Park Library, Central Michigan University. In his talk, Making of an Author 101, Christopher Paul Curtis will trace his path to becoming a writer of historical fiction for young people and the importance certain people played along the way. His novels center on African-American families and tackle tough issues with humor and honesty. This year, he received the Coretta Scott King-Virginia Hamilton Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Library Association, which recognizes outstanding African-American authors, illustrators, and practitioners for lasting and significant contributions to youth or young adult literature. A reception will follow in the Clarke Historical Library. The David and Eunice Sutherland Burgess Lecture was endowed by the Burgesses to support authors, storytellers, and scholars to visit campus and talk about the enduring importance of storytelling.
