Libraries Count (early math literacy) - seeking participating library staff

Hello, We are seeking public library staff in any US state to 1) complete Libraries Count<https://www.ecstemlab.com/library-staff.html>, an early math virtual professional learning program to support working with all young children and their families in math in public libraries, and 2) to provide feedback as a part of our research project to evaluate its effectiveness. * Libraries Count includes 10 modules hosted on Web junction. * Those who complete the program and the surveys get a $20 gift card. * Program evaluation goes live Nov 1, 2024. * Sign up today! More Information Our team has been co-creating the "Libraries Count" program with library staff, researchers, and families over the last 2 years. This initiative is a collaborative effort between the Early Childhood STEM Lab at East Tennessee State University and the School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Alabama, funded by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). The "Libraries Count" project is a three-year applied research study aimed at co-developing and evaluating a professional learning program designed to build the capacity of library staff to support diverse young children and their families in math. Cricut Repair?

Hello All, This is a question for those libraries with Makerspaces, specifically Cricut machines. We have a Cricut we use internally. One of the wheels that pulls the paper into the machine has slipped out of place. The machine needs to be taken apart to put the piece back (maybe even needing a new piece). However, I am not sure what type of business might repair a machine like this... The Cricut website proved to not be helpful. Have any other libraries needed their Cricuts repaired? If so, where do you take them? The machine is only a few years old and we don't use it more than a few times per year, so I'd hate to have to get a new one for a simple repair. Thanks! In House Material Maps

Hi all, I am conducting some research on providing a map in each department (youth, adult) that would show patrons where to find certain items. Do any libraries have anything similar to this that work well or that patrons have been receptive to? Does anyone feel having something like this is not absolutely necessary, and maybe does not get much use? I also wonder if you have color coded any signage in your departments to differentiate varying collections. For example, a green sign indicating where the board books are which have green stickers on them, a yellow sign indicating where to find early reader nonfiction level 1 which has yellow stickers on them, and so on. If you could respond with what your library uses for signage in the building, I would greatly appreciate it. Even if it does not line up with the ideas listed above - it's always great to hear how other libraries are serving their communities. Great Lakes Great Read (GLGR), the “one book, one community” program designed to inspire passion and connection to the Great Lakes Watershed through reading, will kick off the season with a series of three webinars to introduce the authors and books chosen for the 2024-2025 season. Meet GLGR authors Sally Cole-Misch and Joanne Robertson in conversation with Wisconsin Water Librarian Anne Moser on September 25 at 7 pm ET/6 pm CT. Registration is required. Under the direction of the Head of Digital Services, the Digital Services Librarian performs a variety of professional and public service tasks in order to support the library's digital services and technology initiatives. Work involves researching, implementing and promoting new technology and software to fulfill patron needs and help staff work more effectively. DUTIES * Under the supervision of the Head of Digital Services, work as a public service librarian specializing in technology resources, including electronic references, downloadable eBooks and audiobooks, and databases. * Develop and lead high quality technology classes and programs. * Assist technology room patrons, troubleshoot computer hardware and software issues. * Monitor patrons' use of the library public computers and enforce computer use policy. * Apply a full working knowledge of all forms of technology, especially laptops, smartphones, tablets, and e-readers. * Utilize library and technology systems to provide efficient service and perform reference and user guidance. * Assist with the creation of a TPL Maker Space and programming related to a Maker Space. * Perform related duties and general library reference services work as required. REQUIREMENTS * Master of Library Science degree from a library school accredited by the American Library Association. * Interest in new and emerging technology trends in libraries including Maker Spaces. * Proficiency using multiple devices and platforms, including iOS, Android, MacOS, and Windows. * Demonstrated proficiency with electronic databases, Microsoft Office applications, social media, and mobile technology, especially as it relates to digital resources. * Ability to interact courteously and effectively with the public, library staff, library volunteers, and other City departments. * Ability to work in a collaborative, dynamic, fast-paced environment, using excellent organizational and time management skills. * Excellent written and verbal communication skills. * Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information in an appropriate and secure manner. * As a condition of employment, the successful candidate must pass a background check and pre-employment physical and drug screen (including marijuana). PREFERENCES * Previous/current paid work experience in a public library. * Recent experience with makerspaces e.g., 3D printers, laser engravers, etc. * Recent experience with library electronic resources, e.g. OverDrive, hoopla, and other relevant software. * Recent experience in technology instruction. * Experience with Polaris library system software.
