A flyer is forthcoming! The Detroit Public Library is thrilled to announce Josh Malerman & Wow Town Present: INCIDENTS AROUND THE HOUSE: A Theatrical Reading, With a Live Score by Jim Byrne. Incidents Around the House (2024, Del Rey) is Malerman's latest horror novel, and Malerman's troupe will take this haunted tale to the next level with their performance. Date: Sunday, November 3, 2024 Time: 2pm - 4pm EST Location: Main Library Auditorium, 5201 Woodward Avenue, Detroit, MI, 48202 Eventbrite Link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/josh-malerman-wow-town-present-incidents-aroun… Wow Town was started by acclaimed author Josh Malerman and Allison Laakko when Malerman's debut novel Bird Box was released. The idea was to present book launches in a more exciting way than just Malerman at a podium. It has grown considerably since then, with performances in chapels, gymnasiums, bookstores, bars, and theaters. Allison Laakko is largely responsible for the amazing set-design and any creature effects/props. Live music has accompanied almost every performance. INCIDENTS AROUND THE HOUSE: A Theatrical Reading combines Allison Laakko's stage show with Jim Byrne's original score (written entirely for the novel), all set to passages of the book itself. The troupe is made up of Malerman, Laakko, Byrne, plus stage actors Lilli Bishop, Atran Raikany, and Jeannine Thompson, as well as film director/magician James Henry Hall, and voiceover artist Kristi Billings. After the performance, Malerman will stick around for a brief Q&A and book signing. Registration is open for a new wellbeing virtual workshop from the Midwest Collaborative for Library Services. Wellbeing for Libraries – Empowering Yourself and Others is scheduled for Tuesday, November 12, from 1-4 p.m. Eastern (12-3 p.m. Central), via Zoom. The engaging and interactive workshop, led by Jenny Kobiela-Mondor and Lissa Krull, is designed to help you think about how to continue doing the good work that you’re doing while paying attention to your own needs, too. We will explore concepts of flexibility, autonomy, respect, and work-life harmony, and think about making positive changes in your work life and empowering those around you to do the same. Hello Michlib-l, Please join us at 7:00 PM, Monday, October 7th as we welcome Michigan author John Wukovits for a discussion of his book Lost at Sea: Eddie Rickenbacker's Twenty-Four Days Adrift on the Pacific Ocean- A World War II Tale of Courage and Faith. While conducting a government mission during WWII, famed aviator and race car driver Eddie Rickenbacker's, along with seven companions, B-17 was forced to crash land on the ocean’s surface hundreds of miles from land. Join local author John Wukovits for their tale of courage and faith while adrift for 24 days with little fresh water or food on the Pacific. John is a military expert and an authority on the Pacific Theater of World War II.
