Questions about helping hurricane-impacted libraries

Hello everyone, I contacted a consortium colleague in North Carolina to ask what would most help libraries impacted by Hurricane Helene. She responded with two needs: * Social workers and other mental health professionals who could provide emotional and other support * Guidance on how to help library users in affected areas apply for FEMA aid If you know people who could help with either of these needs, please contact me off-list. I assume that Tennessee and also Florida libraries impacted by Hurricane Miltonf would probably express the same needs. Serving a population of 104,000 residents across eight municipalities, Cecil County Public Library (CCPL) offers library services through six branch locations and one bookmobile. Recent library highlights include an award winning 45,000 square foot North East Branch Library and Headquarters, and a newly reimagined space for teens and families at the Perryville Branch Library including an exterior Music and Play Garden. POSITION: Graduate Student Assistantship (GSA) (2 Positions) DEPARTMENT: University Library System Description: Graduate Student Assistants play an integral role in the Wayne State University Libraries. GSA employment is designed to provide a professional hands-on learning experience in an academic library setting. The skills and experience gained from the GSA position will serve to expand upon knowledge gained in the classroom and will be invaluable for graduate students pursuing a career in information sciences. GSAs divide their time between providing direct user assistance at physical and virtual information/reference service points and special projects throughout the library system. Project assignments may include work with discovery services, special collections, eResources, instruction, and digital publishing and are based on interest and career goals. These positions support the Wayne State University mission to create and advance knowledge, prepare a diverse student body to thrive, and positively impact local and global communities. A successful candidate must embrace an environment of inclusion that moves beyond simple tolerance to recognizing the richness in individual identities of people, and diverse perspectives. Register here: https://commercetwp-library.libcal.com/event/12850078 The tumultuous Flint Sit-Down Strike of 1936 to 1937 symbolized the start of the United Auto Workers and set the standard for wages in every industry. This historic transformation of the economic structure in the U.S. ultimately established the golden age of the American middle class. The causes for which the strikers sat down–collective bargaining, secure retirement, better wages–enjoyed a half-century of success. But now, the middle class is diminishing in the 21st century and economic inequality is at its highest since the New Deal. If we want to learn how to revive it, we need to look at how it started in the first place. Midnight in Vehicle City is the dramatic story of how workingmen defeated a major industrial power–General Motors, the largest corporation in the world. Journalist and historian Edward McClelland will bring you into the action-packed events of the strike, such as takeovers of GM plants and violent showdowns between picketers and the police. The strikers’ victory resulted in a new kind of America, one in which every man had a right to the wealth his labor produced. McClelland revives the stories of the industrial Midwest in order to examine how the labor movement has declined as a result of changes in automation, outsourcing, and American politics. He uses the lens of Flint, Michigan, to exemplify how one city can be the birthplace of the middle class yet face its most rapid decline.
