Thousands crossed the river to freedom in Canada from Detroit. Detroit abolitionists helped freedom seekers from the south evade slave catchers and local law enforcement on their way to Canada. Detroit’s abolitionist community were fierce in their support of runaways in the face of severe local opposition. Despite this opposition, Detroit’s abolitionists persisted. Bill Winkel, Assistant Curator of the Detroit Historical Society, joins us to share the freedom seekers and Detroit’s abolitionist community. This is a virtual event. The inclusion committee selected this topic at a time when the LGBTQIA+ community has especially been a target of violence, and books with representative characters and stories are being challenged. It is vital for all youth to find representation in books, and to feel safe in welcoming, inclusive spaces. This training would provide information on how to be a better ally and develop cultural competencies. During the training, attendees learned about historical context, shared language, and inclusive best practices using pronouns. We also discussed implicit bias and the levels of bias, including individual, organizational, systemic bias, and the process of becoming a disruptor. Disruptors support diversity in the community and the coming out process, calling out negative behavior toward LGBTQIA+ youth to create a safe space. Amanda also shared insight on creating library programs, such as book clubs, story times, and other LGBTQIA+ specific programs. After the presentation portion, a safe space was created for attendees to ask any questions they might have about the LGBTQIA+ community. Action steps and a list of resources were shared at the end. The Alpena County George N. Fletcher Public Library is looking for a dynamic and inspiring leader to guide the organization into its next exciting chapter. The ideal candidate will have proven experience in community collaborations, strategic planning, and millage campaigns. We are seeking a leader who can guide our team toward growth and empowerment as library professionals. The Library has an operational budget of just over $1.4M that provides services to 28,000 Alpena County residents. This newly renovated Class V library is located in vibrant downtown Alpena, mere blocks from Lake Huron in Northeast Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. The Library offers robust community programming in a wide variety of formats and is the home of the Thunder Bay Research Collection and treasured local history collections. Library Director - West Lafayette Public Library (IN) The Board of Trustees of the West Lafayette Public Library (IN)<https://wlaf.lib.in.us/> seeks a forward-focused and highly motivated individual to serve as its next Library Director. Serving the 44,600 residents of West Lafayette from a single 59,000 square foot downtown location with 9.53 FTE and a $1.1 million budget, WLPL is working every day to be the community's center for lifelong learning, the collector of the community's written and audio-visual heritage, and the gateway to resources within and beyond its walls. The seven board members are appointed by a combination of the West Lafayette School Corporation, Tippecanoe County Schools, West Lafayette mayor, Tippecanoe County Commissioners, West Lafayette City Council, and the Tippecanoe County Council. The library serves engaged patrons who appreciate the recently refreshed building, thoughtfully developed collection, and new Creativity Lab. During the month of April, Let's Move in Libraries will host a series of online conversations on community collaboration and community health<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fletsmovel…>. Each conversation features 2-4 librarians sharing their experiences working collaboratively with others to promote community health. After the discussion, you're invited to stay in the room for a half-hour open conversation about that week's topic. Each conversation takes place on a Thursday in April, 2023.
