Michigan Learning Channel "Summer is Fun" activity books & more!

The Michigan Learning Channel<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.michi…>, your statewide preK-12 educational programming hub, will be running our third annual "Summer is Fun" program, running mid-June through August 2023. Our goal is to support families, out-of-school programs, and libraries with quality programming and resources that encourage fun, community building, and learning all summer long. A huge component of our programming is our 100-page summer activity book series that we curate for preschool learners, early elementary learners, and upper elementary/early middle school young people. The three different books include activity pages for learning in literacy, math, science, and other content areas alongside fun, local, outdoor activities from Michigan organizations and PBS. All activity pages within the books link directly to a video and resource on our website so that families can engage with our video learning content while participating in hands-on activities. We also align the activity books with our broadcast TV schedule that reaches audiences across the state, with academic learning standards, and with the national CSLP theme "All Together Now." We would love to partner with your library to bring our summer activity books and more to your communities! Join the Midwest Collaborative for Library Services this spring for two virtual Supervisor Series workshops. In Motivating Employees to Be Their Best, supervisors and managers of all levels will learn how to tailor your leadership and communication style to establish a collaborative, inspiring work environment that keeps your employees challenged and motivated. This engaging, collaborative virtual workshop is Thursday, April 6, from 10am-3pm on Zoom. Learning to Manage for New Managers will help new supervisors and managers set yourself up for success as you transition into your new role, while learning to successfully handle staff, projects, performance, conflict, and yourself - all in a supportive online learning environment. Library Director - Sewickley Public Library The Board of Trustees of the Sewickley Public Library (PA),<https://sewickleylibrary.org/> a Library Journal Star Library (2021), seeks a connected, caring, and committed leader as its next Library Director. Serving the eleven municipalities of the Quaker Valley School District and surrounding communities with a $1.2 million budget, 21 FTE, and a single location the library aspires to be the center for lifelong learning and free access to resources for its almost 14,000 residents. As a PA Forward Gold Level library, SPL is incorporating the program's five key literacies into its programming and communications to demonstrate the value Pennsylvania libraries have to their communities. Library highlights include diverse and well-attended programming for all ages, consistent and outstanding customer service, and a critical technology assistance program for community members needing support. Key initiatives include creating a new strategic plan to guide the organization into the future; preserving a historic building and adapting it to be an innovative future-ready facility; communicating the importance and value of the library to the community and greater library profession; and developing a strong and open communication plan across the organization. Situated along the Ohio river valley and just 11 miles Northwest of Pittsburgh, the Borough of Sewickley is a tight-knit community with a strong sense of pride and undeniable charm. Greater Pittsburgh is a place where outdoor enthusiasts can bike, walk, or run along the 24 miles of riverfront trails on the three rivers and can take advantage of the borough park system while Ohiopyle State Park, Laurel Highlands, and the Allegheny National Forest are just a short drive away. The Pittsburgh region has several nationally renowned cultural and educational institutions such as the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Andy Warhol Museum, August Wilson African American Cultural Center, National Aviary, as well as the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, and Duquesne University. The technology, higher education, and medical sectors have helped diversify the local economy. New additions like the Google Campus and steadfast organizations like the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and Allegheny Health Network keep the region balanced and dynamic. Responsibilities: The Library Director, under broad policy guidance and direction from the SPL board, performs professional and administrative duties in the planning, developing, implementing, and directing of library services. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: providing strategic planning and direction, supervision of personnel, creating and managing the library budget, developing and maintaining the public library collections and historic facilities, administering the policies established by the board, and overseeing and evaluating all library departments. Qualifications: Five (5) years of experience as a librarian in an increasingly responsible supervisory and/or administrative position and a master's degree in Library and Information Science granted by an approved college or university are required. Substantial experience in public service is preferred. The ideal candidate will possess comfort with technology and its role in libraries, strong leadership and management skills, excellent communication skills, energy and enthusiasm, strong support of intellectual freedom, an innovative spirit, and the ability to coalesce the organization around a shared vision. In the over one hundred years since this certificate was issued in 1921, most people these days won't know what it represents. Diving deeper into the history of the Associate Library program. it was part of a greater effort to bring library material and information to people across the state of Michigan. The origin of the Associate Library program comes from Public Act No. 28 of 1895: "An act to provide for the management and control, and for the extension of the usefulness of the State Library."<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…> The legislation helped reorganize the management of the State Library and established two key programs: the Traveling Library system and the Associate Library program. The Traveling Library system comprised of collections of 50 books that libraries, schools, granges, reading clubs, and other organizations across the state could request be sent to their community. The Associate Library program allowed for members to request items directly from the collections of the State Library. Any public, incorporated, school, and college library in the state who met the requirements of the program could apply to be an Associate Library. The Dowagiac Ladies' Library Association was the first to apply in 1895 and was Associate Library No. 1. Boyne City Public Library (now Boyne District Library) became Associate Library No. 112 on January 21, 1921. In many ways, the Associate Library program can be viewed as a precursor to the modern MeLCat system used today as part of the Michigan eLibrary<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…>. Like Boyne District Library, all Associate Libraries were issued a certificate identifying their institution as part of the program. SEAL: Solar Eclipse Activities for Libraries Two solar eclipses are coming to North America - an Annular Eclipse in 2023 and a Total Solar Eclipse in 2024 - and it's time for public library staff to get ready! Thanks to a grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and a supplement to the NASA@My Library Project, the Space Science Institute's STAR Net team is providing 5 million solar viewing glasses, in-person training workshops, solar science circulation kits, print resources,~10,000 public libraries and 55 state library agencies across the nation. STAR Net is also offering 2 workshops in Michigan for public library staff! SEAL: Solar Eclipse Activities for Libraries with STAR Net These SEAL workshops will prepare and empower public library staff to facilitate meaningful solar and space science programs for their patrons that build curiosity, knowledge and inspiration. Attendees will receive hands-on training on operating solar telescopes and other methods for direct and indirect solar viewing, best practices for developing and facilitating STEM programs, and how to engage with community partners and library-specific digital resource networks. Attendees will also be able to sign up for free solar eclipse glasses to distribute to their communities in advance of both eclipses! STAR Net facilitators, bringing many years of experience building the STEM capacity of public library staff, will work with each state library to customize the workshop experience based on the needs and interests of public libraries within that state.
