Solar Eclipse Glasses & SEAL Workshops coming to Michigan!

Yes, I said the "s" word... It's Solar Eclipse time again in Michigan! Two solar eclipses are coming to North America - an Annular Eclipse in 2023 and a Total Solar Eclipse in 2024 - and it's time for public library staff to get ready! Thanks to a grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and a supplement to the NASA@My Library Project, the Space Science Institute's STAR Net team is providing 5 million solar viewing glasses, in-person training workshops, solar science circulation kits, print resources,~10,000 public libraries and 55 state library agencies across the nation. STAR Net is also offering 2 workshops in Michigan for public library staff! SEAL: Solar Eclipse Activities for Libraries with STAR Net These SEAL workshops will prepare and empower public library staff to facilitate meaningful solar and space science programs for their patrons that build curiosity, knowledge and inspiration. Attendees will receive hands-on training on operating solar telescopes and other methods for direct and indirect solar viewing, best practices for developing and facilitating STEM programs, and how to engage with community partners and library-specific digital resource networks. Attendees will also be able to sign up for free solar eclipse glasses to distribute to their communities in advance of both eclipses! STAR Net facilitators, bringing many years of experience building the STEM capacity of public library staff, will work with each state library to customize the workshop experience based on the needs and interests of public libraries within that state. Hello Library Land, We recently hosted Valerie Marvin, the official curator and Capitol historian for the Michigan State Capitol. I was genuinely surprised at how entertaining and passionate she was during her Zoom presentation, especially considering it was on the day of the storm, Feb. 22nd. She gave a presentation on “*America’s Greatest Capitol Architect: E.E. Myers*,” and was very informative both during the lecture and afterward for a brief Q & A. She’s an amazing presenter and I highly recommend her. Greetings-- We have a Youth Services Library Intern position opening today. The Bloomfield Township Public Library is looking for an enthusiastic, energetic library science student committed to high quality public Library service. The Bloomfield Township Public Library is a class V Library, with a service population of 44,000+ people. There is strong community support for the Library, its collections, services and programs offered. The Library promotes inclusivity in the diverse collections and programs available to all ages and abilities. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to provide quality public service and the desire to work in a collaborative, team environment. POSITION TITLE: Library Intern DEPARTMENT: Youth Services, reporting to Department Head HOURS: Part-time, 20 hours weekly. Includes evenings and weekends. Internship limited to three years. WAGES & BENEFITS: $17.25 per hour with an increase to $18.00 after successfully completing a 90-day orientation period. Pro-rated paid time-off benefits include vacation, sick, holiday, personal business, and emergency time. Term life and disability income insurance provided. Employee Assistant Program (EAP). RESPONSIBILITIES: This is a pre-professional position that will prepare the intern for future employment in a public library. Interns will serve the public at the library’s service desks. Other regular duties include materials advisory, reference services, and helping patrons access the library’s technology services including the online catalog. Interns will work positively and collaboratively across departments to accomplish goals. Intern projects may include guided planning and copresenting programs and outreach to the community, collection development, the creation of web content, and other duties as assigned. We are also open to project ideas from interns. The goal of the internship is to provide supervised, varied experiences that prepare library science students for the work of professional librarians.
