ABOUT THE YDL-WHITTAKER YOUTH DEPARTMENT The Youth Department is a team of 6 who strive to engage youth and their families at the library and beyond, by inspiring a love of learning and providing easy access to information and diverse ideas through our collections, technology, programs, and community connections. ABOUT THE POSITION The ideal candidate for this job will be passionate about serving the community and empowering parents with tools to help their children succeed academically. Para-professional duties will be assigned by the YDL-Whittaker Head of Youth Services and include providing support for the TALK project and working in the Youth Department to provide reference and program support to library users and staff. Foundations of digital literacy virtual workshops for Michigan library staff

Foundations of Digital Literacy is a new virtual training offered by MCLS in partnership with the Library of Michigan. This workshop is designed to help library staff gain confidence in everyday interactions with technology and is intended for participants who would like a basic introduction to digital literacy topics. Registration is now open and filling fast! This workshop is being offered multiple times in September and October to accommodate smaller participation limits in each session, which will allow for plenty of personal attention and lots of interactive small group activities. At long last, retirement

Hello everyone, As was the case with so many of you, one of my favorite places as a child was the public library--in my case, specifically, the Mark Twain Branch of the Detroit Public Libraries--which, unfortunately, no longer exists. In 1957, the new Chandler Park Branch, located much closer to my house, opened, and I was faced with a dilemma: Do I attend the grand opening of the branch or stay home and watch the premiere of the television series Blondie? I chose to go to the library. In 1966, I began working at the same branch as a page. I'm not sure if it was because I had reached the ripe old age of 14 or only because I was a library employee, but I was delighted to be permitted, finally, to check out items from the Adult section of the library. (Previously, I had had to read Adult items in the building itself. The only items juveniles could check out were from the juvenile section. And the juvenile section contained only quality literature. Trash like The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew was not allowed.) As a special bonus, I even had access to the really Adult items housed behind the Circulation Desk. I truly felt like the "sir" that one kid, amazingly, called me. $1.25 an hour was a decent wage back then, but inflation was rearing its ugly head, and eventually I received a raise to $1.75. I had a good run at Chandler Park, but after a couple of years, I left after a policy dispute with the new branch manager. A child needed to look up the definition of a German word for a school assignment, and the reference librarian, who didn't know how to use a German dictionary, was struggling. I helped out, and the child got his definition. The manager reprimanded me, however, and told me that, besides shelving books, the only things a page was allowed to do was tell patrons the time of day and point the way to a librarian. I admit this wasn't the last time I've disagreed with a library policy. Nevertheless, I maintained a fond spot in my heart for libraries and eventually received an M.L.S. from the University of Michigan. My first full-time professional position was at Delta College, near Bay City. I truly enjoyed that job, but still, I recall that sometime around my second week there, I started thinking, "Hmmm ... retirement ... how does that work precisely? It doesn't sound like such a bad thing." Well, 46 years later, I've decided to try it out. After 30 years at the Baldwin Public Library, during ten of which I've been Director, I've decided to hang up my boots. My last day of work will be January 15, 2021. The Baldwin Public Library will conduct a search for my replacement, with the aim of having that person in place by January. The posting will be issued shortly. I have five more months to go, and I'm sure that I'll be seeing a number of you during that period, but I do want to take the time now to thank so many of you for the support and guidance you've provided me over the course of my career. Need help from the collective mind

Hello, For many years this library board has approved the bills after they are paid. Bills are paid twice a month and those payments are approved at the next meeting. Checks require two signatures, one of which is a board member, and every board member gets a list of bills paid for approval. Our auditor has never had a problem with us doing it this way. Now the board has passed a motion that bills, other than utilities, must be approved before payment. I have been thinking about this and have more questions than answers. I hope lots of you do it like that and can help me figure out some things. My first question is, what qualifies as utilities? I know the obvious ones, but what about monthly payments that are usually the same amount, like the copy machine lease, the floor mats we rent, cleaning, my health insurance, the alarm company, etc. The board meets the second Thursday of the month, which can be as early as the 8th. I don't always have invoices that early in the month but they are due before the board will meet again, which can be as late as the 14th. How do I avoid being late with payments? Our auditor suggested either the board decide the Financial Committee can approve the bills twice a month, or they move their meeting to later in the month. Position Announcement: Coopersville Area District Library Director To continue to fulfill the library’s mission: Preserving the past, providing technology and education for a lifetime of learning and promoting culture and community through literature and the arts ,” the Coopersville Area District Library Board is accepting resumes for the position of Library Director. The Coopersville Area District Library (CADL) began serving citizens within Polkton Township and the city of Coopersville in 1913. In the 1970s, it became a district library and added both Wright and Chester Townships to its service area. In 1994, the library transitioned to be a governmental authority. In 2015, the community passed a $1.65 million bond millage proposal to renovate and expand the building. Operations resumed at the current location on Ottawa Street location in May 2017. Responsibilities: The Director plans and administers all aspects of library operations: supervise all staff and volunteers, implement policies set by the CADL Board, develop and promote innovative and creative programs and diverse and accessible collections to best serve the library’s users and act s as its representative at local, state and intergovernmental meetings with the Downtown Development Authority, Ottawa County, Library of Michigan, Lakeland Library Cooperative and many others. Qualifications: · A master’s degree or its equivalent from a library school accredited by the American Library Association and Level Two Certification by the Library of Michigan. (The director will have previously completed or will complete the New Director’s Workshop within 1 year of the appointment and complete Advanced Director’s Workshop within 2 years of being appointed library director.) · Effective interpersonal relations, including strong team-building, active listening and problem solving skills. · Experience in financial management, budgeting, district library law and operating policies and strategic planning and the ability to share that knowledge with others. · Strong communication skills when working with the board, staff and the community in promoting library services and the value of the library including the use of social media and web page design. · Proficiency with technology associated with library management, software applications and hardware maintenance. · Experience in materials selection, collection maintenance and organization and a true love for libraries and the principals they support. This is a full-time 40 hour per week position with a starting salary between $42,500 and $45,500 based on experience. There is also a generous benefits package.
