Hello fellow Michiganders, Over the past 12 years, the Jackson District Library has hosted Larry Martin's In Their Own Words at our Carnegie Branch. If you have never seen this program, [ http://lmww2.com/ | Larry Martin's WWII In Their Own Words ] , I encourage you to have Larry come to your library; which he would love to do. "In Their Own Words" has drawn between 80 and 150 attendees per event. An estimated 5,000 people have come to hear the reflections and experiences of WWII veterans that Larry has interviewed. As our former director, Ishwar Laxminarayan, stated "We deeply appreciate the dedication shown by Mr. Larry Martin for bringing these stories alive and are honored to be a partner in his efforts. Larry brings a wealth of knowledge to the program and has recorded scores of interviews with veterans over the past ten years. He passionately reminds his audiences that the freedoms they now take for granted were earned through the hard sacrifices of many thousands of veterans who fought in World War II". Magazine subscriptions through Amazon?

Hi all, We are evaluating our magazine collection which is rather extensive and we will probably be downsizing based on data we are currently collecting. We have been using an out-of-state subscription service but have had some issues. We are thinking of switching to Amazon next year. If you've been ordering from them, what are your feelings? Accessibility Chat workshop rescheduled

The Michigan Alliance for Cultural Accessibility (MACA) "Accessibility Chat" workshop that was cancelled due to the extreme weather conditions on January 30th, has been rescheduled! Warren Civic Center Library SKYWARN® program 3/14/019

On Thursday, March 14, 2019 at 6:00 p.m., the Warren Civic Center Library will host Skywarn®, a National Weather Service (NWS) training class. Skywarn® is a severe weather spotting program with trained volunteers nationwide. Spotter information helps NWS provide better forecasts and warnings by conveying significant or severe weather reports such as thunderstorms, hail, tornadoes, heavy snow, and flooding. This training includes safety information and lasts about 1.5 hours. It is free and open to the public. If you are interested in becoming part of the NWS volunteer network, this class is for you. This program will be held in the Atrium Conference Room at the Warren Civic Center located 2 blocks east of Van Dyke, one quarter mile north of 12 Mile Rd. This consultant will develop and deliver timely and topical training on emerging services. This consultant will help public libraries in Wisconsin determine, bolster, and demonstrate their value to their community, as well as to strengthen ties with other community resources through services to adults in their communities through job skills, lifelong learning, as well as library services to engage the increasing demographic of older adults. E-rate news: Category 2 Recommendation from FCC

Please see the attached Category 2 Budget Report. You may want to note the following from the larger document: Recommendations. We recommend that the Commission retain the category two budget approach. Given the improvements that the category two budget approach has shown over the two-in-five rules, the Bureau does not recommend a return to the two-in-five rules approach. The Commission established five-year category two budgets to make funding for internal connections more equitable, predictable, and more broadly available. It did so in recognition of the importance of internal connections, particularly robust Wi-Fi networks, the role they play in enhancing educational opportunities for students and library patrons, and the potential for these networks to close the digital divide. The Bureau's review of the data from the first five-year category two budget cycle shows that the Commission's goals in creating these budgets have largely been met. Further, we recommend that the Commission consider some targeted changes to the budgets moving forward such as an increase in the funding floor, to the extent that it finds that insufficient funding is deterring entities at the funding floor and rural libraries from participating. These recommendations are supported by the data the Bureau reviewed and are also consistent with the Public Notice comments. We await a final decision from the Commission, whereas the commissioners will likely adopt or adopt with some possible changes, the recommendations as written.
