MeL Minute: A Passion for Learning

[A close up of text on a white background Description automatically generated]Lorena McDowell, Director of the Fraser Public Library in Fraser, MI, shared with me an interaction that she had with a student recently where the use of MeL eResources was an essential part of assisting her patron. An eighth grade student from a local school was assigned a "Passion Project" by her English teacher. A "passion project", for those that aren't familiar, is the concept of students intentionally spending time researching their passions and sharing their insights. This type of assignment helps to develop research skills, helps the student practice non-fiction writing, and includes the student creating a bibliography. The project may also include some type of multimedia component as well. What a great idea! The student decided that she wanted to find out more about theater in the Western world. The student worked with Lorena to find books on her subject, which she was able to do, but it was just basic information. The student needed more detail. MeL eResources to the rescue! Lorena asked the student if she had tried any of the library's databases, and the answer was no. Lorena suggested Academic Search Complete. She explained that the database might have more detailed information and that the resources were authoritative. To Lorena's delight, the student had learned about authoritative sources at her school library (where coincidently her school district still has school media specialists that started the student on her research path). She walked the student through getting online, and they put in the term "theater", which was too broad and provided way too many articles/resources. They narrowed it down to "history of theater", did some more refining, and found some great resources! One stop shopping! The student was able to complete her assignment and came back to the Fraser Public Library to let Lorena know that she received an A+ (100%) on her project. The teacher said that she had the best project by far and she had an extensive bibliography because she was able to get access to so many resources through the Academic Search Complete database. "Being a Librarian is one of the best jobs you can have when you are able to help a patron by connecting them with the right resources," said Lorena. We should all have such a passion for learning and helping our patrons! United For Libraries is the Division of the American Library Association that focuses on issues and resources for Library Trustees and Friends groups. In addition to providing access to training and organizational resources, the United For Libraries membership includes print and digital copies of The Voice newsletter. Every Michigan Public Library receives a subscription to a print copy of The Voice, and a digital archive of this newsletter is available on the United For Libraries website. REMC purchasing for libraries

Greetings all, It's been a while since I sent out a reminder about REMC purchasing for libraries. I was just in touch with Karen Hairston, your contact should you have questions, and she provided the following detailed information about this year's bid. Use it in good health! Libraries are eligible to purchase off any of the REMC bids. REMC SAVE, the group that manages all of the bids, updated their website to http://remcsave.org<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fremcsave.or…>. If libraries are familiar with going to http://remcbids.org<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fremcbids.or…>, they'll be automatically redirected to the new website. Most of the REMC bids are ongoing for multiple years, so a library just needs to search the REMC catalog and contact the vendor directly. So depending what they're looking for, the items may be available now. The Device Purchasing Bid, through which schools, libraries, etc. can usually get even better deals on desktop computers, laptops, and tablets, is in forecasting right now and runs through Friday (2/15), so if there are libraries that think they are going to purchase off of this bid, they should forecast. The higher the forecast volume, the better the prices that we'll get from the vendors. The purchase window for Device Purchasing will run from April 17 - Sept 30. copy machine inquiry - responses

Thanks to all who responded to my inquiry regarding copy machine/scanning services. Below are responses: I would recommend contacting Applied Imaging. Here's a link to page that has a pdf with the copier/printer vendor contacts that TLN recommends. https://tln.lib.mi.us/discounts/ I’m former IT, and like most have a lost/hate with printers. Without knowing your situation exactly…it sounds like maybe your best bet is a $1000+ machine. You can handle all of your staff printing, public printing, copies, and even scanning to email with a single machine that can last a decade, instead of trying to support multiple smaller ones. Again, your situation dependent, if you buy a machine outright you only have to pay for toner, or work with a maintenance company to keep toner in stock or lease a machine. Mari Martin 517-388-7539 or toll free 800-643-1822 Was with Hasselbring Clark but I think they are now Applied Imaging. She is a miracle worker. Found a machine that was no longer a "new" model and it works perfect for what we need. It faxes, copies, scans and sends...and I didn't think we need that much but we do use it alot. Call her and see what she has to offer. Tell her Joann sent you....lol We replaced our office printer about two years ago and it has been chugging along without problems. It is a laser printer and I’m not happy about the cost of ink but I think that is a problem no matter what you go with. It does start warning that the ink is low way before it runs out so we just ignore the messages until the printing starts to get light. Here is what we have: https://smile.amazon.com/HP-Laserjet-Multifunction-Wireless-Replenishment/d… We have two kyocera taskalfa printers (3252ci) at our main branch and they do everything we need them to do. They copy, print, scan to email/usb (and can be set up to fax) we have had very little problems with them and they get used heavily. It might be too much for what you need though; our smaller branches have a tabletop size printer (kyocera ecosys m6535cidn) that does everything that the big one does (except for the ledger sized paper) that might work for your purposes. Its their only machine; they have it set up to print, copy, fax and scan. We have a service contract through Brady's though, so if anything goes wrong we can call them to fix it. We lease ours through Great Lakes Business Systems on Woodmere in TC on the recommendation from the TADL tech department. We have are beyond pleased. All maintenance, toner, etc. included, pay by the print. They call monthly for a print number of color and B&W off of machine. TIP: We make sure as staff to print in B&W as much as possible and make sure even if it's a b&W to choose B&W on the print screen it does make a difference in the count. We charge patrons .20 for B&W, .50 for color and .20 to scan to email, and 1.00 per sheet for faxing. Great Lake: https://glbsi.com/ We've replaced ours in the last year with this model: HP Color Laserjet Flow MFP M880 and have been pretty satisfied. This was through Precision Printers, out of the Kalamazoo area.
