Probationary Period for Card Holders?

Hi! Do any libraries have a probationary period for new card holders? If you do, is it for everyone or it is based on some criteria; how long is the probationary period; and what are the limitations? We currently do not have any restrictions - a card is valid immediately and the card holder can max out checkout limits on the first day. Recently we have had a number of new card holders who do just that and are never heard from again. Any advice, examples, or suggestions are welcome! Position: Shelver, Permanent Part-time Job Duties: * Sorts and loads carts for shelving. * Shelves and shifts materials in the public areas; shelf reads; reports problems with shelf organization. * Directs patrons to Reference staff for assistance. * Assists with opening and closing procedures. * Assists Librarians with special projects with the approval of the Support Services Supervisor. Processing Question

Good afternoon everyone! Does anyone out there in library land have a good solution for keeping spine labels on hardcover cloth-bound titles? We have purchased some classics in this beautiful style but they have proven difficult to process. We have tried some various methods and they don't stick as well to these books. Overhead people counter

Hello Everyone, I've been looking into different types of people counters to plan ahead for replacing ours. We currently use a SenSource Wireless counter that utilizes a break-beam to count. (http://www.sensourceinc.com/PC-TB12N.htm) As I've been looking online I have found that there are overhead counters that are more accurate, but require a hard-wire connection. (http://www.trafsys.com/people-counting/) Do any of you use an overhead counter? If so, what company do you use and do you like it? Possible author program - Monica Sholar

Hello, I would like to recommend thriller/suspense author, Monica Sholar, from Canton for presentations at your library. Monica is the author of the Belle Isle Heights series and talks about her journey to becoming a published author. She spoke at our library last week and we found her to be quite inspirational regarding the importance of pursuing your passion. She is personable, organized, punctual, and can bring her own books to sell. Her website is www.monicasholar.com and her email is authormrs(a)gmail.com. As I listened to her talk, I really thought she would also be a great speaker for teens. Even though her books are targeted for adults, as a young African-American woman who is positively pursuing her dream, Monica is a great role model and I think her message would resonant strongly with teens who are interested in writing. Several aspiring writers were in attendance at our program and Monica was very supportive of their work and gave them concrete advice. Feel free to contact me off-list if you have further questions.
