Serving as a member of the Library's Executive team, the successful candidate will be a strategic, collaborative thinker, have creative ideas and planning skills, experience and interest in facilities expansion, and strong leadership experience. The Director, Public Services will be valued for change management, a knowledge of current industry trends, and the skills to coach, mentor, and work with a strong professional team of six direct reports. Supporting and implementing the Library's focused, robust 2015-2020 Strategic Plan <http://www.imcpl.org/strategicplan/files/StrategicPlanPresentation_2014aug2 5.pdf> will be a vital component of the position. The Indianapolis Public Library is an exciting work environment-as an independent library district with a permanent tax rate exclusively dedicated to public library services-the Library staff (358 FTEs) and almost 500 volunteers serve the 800,000+ citizens of Indianapolis and Marion County through 23 locations, including the stunning Central Library, the Children's Museum's InfoZone, and an active Outreach department. Named a Four-Star library by Library Journal for the past three years, the Library celebrated 4.2 million patron visits and a 15.9 million circulation in 2014. The Library has a $57 million annual budget with 11+ million dedicated to public services. Indianapolis, the state capital and county seat of Marion County, is Indiana's largest city, the 12th largest city in the U.S., the second largest city in the Midwest, and one of the fastest growing regions in the United States. Historically focused on government and industry, Indianapolis today offers a diversified economy in the fields of education, health care, and finance. Responsibilities: The Director, Public Services will be responsible for the public service area's strategic planning, alignment and access of library services to the residents of Marion County. The Public Services area includes the Central Library, 22 branch libraries, Outreach and Programming. In addition to serving on the Library's Executive Team, the Director, Public Services also functions as a Board Committee Liaison. Other responsibilities include: analyzing community needs and expanding community access, collaborating on development of strategic and geographic plans for facilities development, developing and monitoring the Public Services budget, seeking and developing community connections, participating in Indianapolis in a civic capacity, and leadership and management of the Public Services staff. Qualifications: Minimum qualifications include an ALA-accredited Master's Degree in Library Science, the ability to obtain and retain an Indiana Librarian Certificate II, and a minimum of five years of professional experience in a senior management role in a multi-branch system. RFID feedback

Hello Everyone, It looks like my library may finally join the RFID world. We currently have 1 self-check machine that we use via barcode scanner; it is RFID enabled so we can use it once we do the conversion of tags. We will not be getting any additional self-checks, security gates or an automated material handler/sorter at this time. We simply want quicker checkout/in with RFID and easier inventory control with a handheld scanner. I have quotes from 3M and MK Solutions. In the Midwest, 3M is the main provider so it is hard to find libraries that can give feedback on using MK. Have any of you used MK Solutions? If so, was your experience positive or negative? Do you recommend them? Likewise for 3M? Anybody with experience with BOTH companies? Also, big news if you haven't heard yet, Bibliotheca acquired 3M Libraries (http://www.bibliotheca.com/3/index.php/en-us/enews-media/global-press-relea…) Can't help but wonder how this will affect pricing and service as they transition. Hello all, If everything is running smoothly we all tend to take easy access to the MeL databases for granted. But, when all of a sudden you can't connect to a resource or some features don't seem to work, the first thought may be, who do I contact for help? If you've tried everything you know how to do, you've restarted your computer, checked your connections, and your tech person/staff can't figure it out, it's time to contact Midwest Collaborative for Library Services (MCLS)<http://mcls.org/> for their expert assistance. Their MeL Databases help page http://mcls.org/mel/mel-databases/help/ offers help on a variety of topics as well as the email address and phone number for reporting problems. Sending an email to meldatabaseshelp(a)mcls.org<mailto:meldatabaseshelp@mcls.org> starts the process of resolving the problem you or your patrons may be experiencing. MCLS works promptly to resolve issues, contacts vendors as appropriate, and notifies the library community via the library listservs if the reported problem is system-wide and not just local. Database problems don't occur often but when they do, we want you to know how to get help. The FAQ, Help page, and email address and phone number are intended for library staff. National Day on Writing Celebration

Hello everyone, This Saturday, October 17th, the Westland Library will be having a National Day on Writing Celebration. We invite aspiring authors and everyone interested in writing to join us this Saturday from 1-4 pm to learn more about publishing and marketing your work locally. Our guest speakers are local author Cheryl Vatcher-Martin and Linda Moore, the founder of Moore Publishing of Michigan. We'll end the event with a Local Author Fair from 3-4 pm, where people can meet local authors and learn more about their books.
