FILMSTRIPS & PROJECTORS!!

Hi Library Folk - we have been doing a lot of cleaning here at the Hazel Park Library because of a recent basement leak which resulted in installing a new tile floor and moving all the boxes of craft supplies we have been acquiring over the last 13 years. In our cleanout and reorganization we unearthed the following treasures that are just waiting for a good home: 1 Vuaid Filmstrip Ceiling Projector model 20-1 1 Viewlex Previewer Junior no. 2 2 - 6 drawer metal file cabinets (about 12 x 20) - containing approx. 500 filmstrips Projected Books Inc. (Ann Arbor, MI) 8 boxes (with 10 reels of filmstrips) for adult level, juvenile level and junior high level titles) This is the "motherload" of filmstrips for a library that is interested in obtaining them. CALL FOR PROPOSALS *MLA Spring Institute 2015* Growing, Networking and Inspiring!March 26 – 27, 2015 Sheraton Ann Arbor Hotel Ann Arbor, Michigan *Call for Breakout Session Program Proposals* *Submissions <https://docs.google.com/forms/d/19WrWAJMNSimyA3cIY9_dpszQx3zBi92Rjj_ECE_z6t…> welcome through October 23, 2014* The MLA Spring Institute 2015 Conference theme is *Growing, Networking and Inspiring,* reflecting the experiences that the event will focus on. The conference will work to achieve the following goals and outcomes. - *Provide quality professional development for those serving youth in libraries.* - Attendees will gain at least three ideas that they can apply or adapt at their libraries. - *Enable an opportunity for those serving youth in libraries to exchange relevant, actionable knowledge through networking.* - Attendees will connect with new professional contacts with whom they can exchange ideas. - Attendees will build professional relationships that will provide future support. - *Revitalize and inspire those serving youth in libraries.* - Attendees will return to their library with renewed enthusiasm for their work. *Program Submission General Guidelines* - Program submitter may or may not also be the presenter. Either is acceptable. - Communications by MLA will be to all members who are a part of your submission. Contact information is required for each presenter. - Presenters are not reimbursed or compensated for session time, mileage, or any other such item. - Presenters must register for the day(s) they attend Spring Institute if they intend to stay beyond their allotted presentation time. *Agreements and Selection Notification* - MLA will contact each program’s submitter and subsequent presenters in regards to final decisions on or before October 28. - MLA will send all presenters a Presenter Agreement indicating date, time, and details of their presentation. This will be confirmed by the presenter and returned to MLA. *Program AV & Room Setup* - All presentation rooms will be supplied with a projector and screen; a microphone will be available as applicable. - Internet access may be available but is not guaranteed. *Be sure to indicate if Internet access is required on the submission form.* - Presenters will provide their own laptops and have presentations on laptops, flash drives, cloud, etc. Remote mouse devices/pointers are the responsibility of the presenter. Apple users will be responsible for also providing their own adaptor for connection to the projector. *Program Handouts & Evaluations* - Printed handouts will not be reproduced by MLA for the conference. Presenters may provide handouts themselves if desired. - Handouts may be posted to the MLA website before the conference. Call for handouts will be on March 13, 2015. *Selection Criteria* The Spring Institute work group will use the following criteria in assessing the viability of including a program on the schedule. Former Poet Laureate Phiilp Levine reading October 19 in Alpena

The Alpena County George N. Fletcher Public Library is presenting former Poet Laureate and Detroit native Philip Levine at the Alpena High School Auditorium on Sunday, October 19 at 7pm. A reception and signing follow the reading. Levine has published numerous books of poetry. He has won a Pulitizer Prize for poetry and several of his books have won a National Book Award. He was Poet Laureate of the United States from 2011-2012. Tickets are $10 and are available on the Library’s website www.alpenalibrary.org or at the door. OverDrive Statement Regarding Adobe Digital Editions

All, By now you've probably read at least one of the numerous articles that appeared earlier this week regarding library patron privacy concerns, OverDrive, and ADE (Adobe Digital Editions). Late yesterday, Thursday, October 9 OverDrive released a brief statement that includes a link to one of the original articles, as well as the Adobe response. There is not a lot here, except that the statement does note that it is OverDrive's understanding that the issue concerns ADE 4, which is not used as part of the OD app. I am sharing this on account there are many OverDrive subscriber libraries in Michigan. I don't know if this information will be helpful to you when it comes to answering questions from your patrons regarding this issue. TLN administers a 46 library, soon to be 47 with the pending addition of Flat Rock Public Library, OverDrive group known as Download Destination http://tln.lib.overdrive.com/ To that end I've asked Mr. Brian Potash, Account Executive at OverDrive, to draft a response to us in regards to this issue. He has said he will do so. The Special Libraries Association Michigan Chapter would like to invite anyone to join us on October 23 for a tour of the Cyclotron Laboratory at Michigan State University. It promises to be a fun, fascinating, and informative visit to the largest university campus-based nuclear science laboratory in the United States The National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory is the largest university campus-based nuclear science laboratory in the United States. Today, NSCL is the nation’s flagship rare isotope user facility, serving over 700 researchers from more than 20 countries. It is also the nation’s largest university-campus-based nuclear science laboratory, producing approximately 10% of the nation’s Ph.D.s in nuclear physics and ranked the #1 nuclear physics graduate program by U.S. News & World Report. The laboratory employs more than 100 students and provides them with access to top-level research and educational experience. When: Thursday, October 23, 2014 from 4:00pm – 6pm Where: National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory 640 S. Friends of Mott Library Art Auction Fundraiser

Hello all, On November 13, the Friends of Mott Library at Mott Community College will be holding an art auction fundraiser. Our Friends group is a wonderful support for the library at MCC and over the years have put money towards things to benefit our students. One my favorite things the Friends funds each year is our Baker and Taylor lease collection. If you are in the area and would enjoy an evening out, please consider purchasing a ticket.
