This is a unique 6 hour workshop that will help you gain control over negative feelings and demonstrate how to become more self-accepting and less critical of others. Time is running out to register for "Make Your Own Map: Exploring Geographic Information Science for Librarians". The deadline to register is tomorrow, Wednesday, October 15 at 4:00 pm! With the escalation of online GIS mapping applications (demographic and business databases for example), it is becoming increasingly important for librarians to understand and be proficient with these tools; to best serve our patrons and conduct research. Learn several different ways of making maps and utilizing these resources using both free websites and licensed databases. This expanded presentation will include more information about the full GIS software, ArcGIS it's interactive companion, ArcGIS online. The demonstration will include uploading a list of addresses to ArcGIS Online to create a point map, and will shade in areas of interest to create a simple reference map. This workshop will run on October 21, from, 9:00 am - 12:00 pm (Eastern Time Zone). Cooking Books

The program will feature a discussion of a cooking book, followed by a cooking class and/or demonstration based on recipes in the book. Calling all Michigan Teens! The 12th Annual Teen Filmmaker Festival<http://www.kpl.gov/teens/filmmakerfest/> is accepting entries for the best teen-produced and directed films. Three expert judges will award prizes for best film, best animation, best experimental film, best documentary, best short film (under three minutes), best technical merit, best music video and judge's choice. You must fill out an individual entry form for each film submitted. A jury will screen every film entered and select finalists for screening at the Festival. Filmmakers will be notified if their film is selected by the week of February 1. Not every film submitted to the Festival will be selected for screening at the public event. Official Rules Films must be produced by teens, ages 12-19, who reside in the state of Michigan. More than one teen may work on a film. Adults may be talent in a film, but should perform no other duty in the actual creation of the film. Films may not be more than 10 minutes long. Teens may submit more than one film. Films submitted to the festival will not be returned. A panel of judges will select the winners in each category except the People's Choice Award, which will be chosen at the Teen Filmmaker Festival by the audience members. Format Requirements Films should be submitted as full-quality Quicktime/MOV files on USB flash drive. DVDs may be submitted instead, but USB drives are preferred. All other formats, (including VHS, Windows Media Files, low-quality Quicktime files, etc.) will be automatically disqualified. If submitting on DVD, entries must be formatted for Region 1 (North America) and labeled with the film's title, running time and director(s) name(s). Please double-check that your DVD plays in its entirety on standard consumer DVD players. Due to the impending retirement of the current director, the Newaygo Area District Library is accepting resumes for the position of Library Director. Description: The Newaygo Area District Library (NADL) is a Class II library serving a population of over 6,800 in the city of Newaygo and a portion of Brooks and Garfield Townships. Newaygo is a picturesque community nestled on the banks of the Muskegon River. In recent years the natural beauty of the area, the friendly small town atmosphere, and progressive community planning have drawn new businesses and families alike. The library is proud to serve this vibrant community. The library, located in the downtown area of Newaygo, is open 43 hours, six days a week with a dedicated and enthusiastic staff of 7 and an approximate annual budget of $250,000. A renovation and expansion of the original Carnegie Library building was completed in March of 2013. The project increased the size of the building from approximately 3,000 square feet to over 11,000 square feet and made it completely accessible. The Newaygo Area District Library is a member of the Lakeland Library Cooperative. The NADL Board is seeking a dynamic individual to lead the library. The successful candidate will be a “hands-on” administrator, be visible in the library and in the community, have a vision for library service, and have the ability to articulate that vision to the Board, the staff, and the public. Candidates will have strong technology skills and a vision for the use of technology in providing library services, be an excellent communicator, and have experience in managing and directing employees. Candidates should also be able to demonstrate examples of successful community/library collaboration, customer service focus, financial management expertise, and strong Board relations. Qualifications: Qualified applicants will have a minimum of 2 years of progressively responsible experience as a public library administrator or department head. Applicants holding an MLS degree from an ALA-accredited institution with the ability to obtain a Michigan Certification Level II are preferred. Applicants holding a BA will also be considered. Qualified applicants will have extensive knowledge of current public library principles, methods and practices and will possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with community leaders, public officials, professional groups, library employees and the general public. Applicants must also possess a working knowledge of budget preparation, grant writing, and fundraising. Salary: Commensurate with experience and qualifications. Non-traditional circulating collections

Hi all; My library is toying (sorry for the pun) with the idea of creating some non-traditional circulating collections (such as puzzles, board games, puppets, backpack sets,etc.) If your library has collections like these already in circulation, could you share your thoughts? In particular, here are a couple questions we have: 1. Puzzles/games - How do you check for missing pieces? If they come back with missing pieces, do you charge a fee? 2. I read a lot of them in the late 50's. The ones I saw were hardcovers—turquoise. I got in trouble for reading them, too. We were only supposed read the books in our individual class rooms, but I discovered a stash of them in the teachers workroom. I would sneak in and climb up the shelves to reach the books. These books were published circa the early 1960s (or maybe earlier) and featured b&w line drawings illustrating the person's life. The covers featured the same artwork, and the background color for each book jacket was a different color. I remember reading the book on Eleanor Roosevelt (blue/gray, I think) and the one on Abe Lincoln (tan). Amelia Earhart was also in the series. Big help, right? I poked around with keyword searches in library catalogs, but of course these books are long gone from library shelves. No luck with the Amazon marketplace either.
