Hi Everyone, In addition to the AWE pc discount opportunity emailed previously, libraries have the opportunity to purchase the AWE tablet as part of the discount available through November 15. Jeremly Link at AWE is happy to announce that Michigan Libraries have spoken for 17 AWE computers. This means that the unit price for everyone is now at $2,993 each. This puts us that much closer to the 25 unit mark and the next discount. Eight more orders will push the price to the $2,835 price category. Young Authors' Festival and Writing Contest at Univ. of Michigan -Dearborn

Help celebrate Henry Ford's 150th birthday! The College of Education, Health, and Human Services and the Mardigian Library at the University of Michigan-Dearborn are sponsoring a Young Authors' Festival and Writing Contest. The festival's theme is "Henry's Dream." The Writing Contest is for children in grades 4, 5, and 6. The contest theme is: "What are your dreams for your future? How do you plan to reach your dreams?" One winner from each grade will receive a $50 Barnes & Noble gift card, and the grand prize winner will receive a $100 Barnes & Noble gift card. Details and contest rules can be found at: http://library.umd.umich.edu/events/YAF/ The Young Authors' Festival will be held Saturday, November 23, 2013 from 8:30 a.m. until noon at the University of Michigan-Dearborn's Mardigian Library. Carol Hagen and Matt Faulkner, author and illustrator of "The Night Henry Ford Met Santa," will talk to children about writing and illustrating a book. Faculty and pre-service teachers will lead break-out sessions with activities along with tips and techniques for writing and supporting children in their writing. Original art work from Matt Faulkner, along with art work from other illustrators, will be on display. Ms. Hagen and Mr. Faulkner, both from Michigan, will be available for autographs. Copies of "The Night Henry Ford Met Santa" will be available for purchase. The event is FREE and open to the public. technology devices

Good afternoon all, I'm curious to learn what other libraries are doing regarding assisting patrons with the millions of different technology devices. I'm sure we are not the only library to have people coming in with MP3 players, ipods, cellular phones, trail cameras, Garmin's, tom-toms......... (the list could go on and on and on) all looking for help in downloading or updating software on these devices. We find the majority of our community who have these "devices" do not have computers at home. Which also means they are not active with email (which also is a problem with a number of devices who want to connect to their users) If they have an email they can't remember the login information to access it. We have 14 public access workstations that we make available to our community. Our public workstations are locked down pretty tight. Some people consider them "personal computers" available to the public but they really are not personal computers. They are workstations designed for public use. I would really be interested to learn what other libraries are doing to deal with this challenge. Do any libraries have a policy on what devices can be used on their public workstations? If you allow devices to be connected to a workstations, what are they? Your input would be appreciated!! Thanks Sheila Sheila M. Digital Literacy & Library Technology Session Proposals Encouraged for the Rural Libraries Conference

The call for proposals for the 2014 Rural Libraries Conference is now open. https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/RLC2014 The Steering Committee is especially interested in receiving submissions from libraries that would like to share their experiences with digital literacy and library technology. These could include the following types of sessions: * Sharing computer training program ideas and best practices * Creating collaborations with other organizations to bring digital literacy or other technology services to your community * Innovative use of technology to provide library programming or services * Creative uses of online sources such as DigitalLiteracy.gov or DigitalLearn.org or other digital literacy resources The ideas listed above are only there to help generate ideas for program submissions. Please consider more topics or ideas than I have listed here. If you have questions, feel free to contact me. Of course we have more than digital literacy in mind when we look to fill the 2014 RLC program so if you are interested in another area, please take a look at the submission form for more information. https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/RLC2014 Proposals are due Monday, October 21, 2013 in order to be considered for inclusion in the 2014 conference.
