Virtual Presenter Recommendation - Martina Mathisen
by Jennifer Noble 14 Mar '22

14 Mar '22

Hi all, I wanted to recommend a virtual presenter we've worked with a few times now at ADL. Martina Mathisen has multiple "edu-taining" virtual programs on various historical people and topics, and our patrons have loved every single one that she's presented for us. She's very engaging and knowledgeable, and it's especially fun to see her manage costume changes in real time. If you're looking for more virtual programming, I suggest checking out her website! https://www.martinamathisen.com/programs.html Martina has also branched into virtual training sessions for library staff. I've never attended one, so I can't say anything definite about them, but if they're as good as her programs, they're worth looking into. Happy to chat more one-on-one if anyone has any further questions. Best, Jen -- Jennifer Noble (she/her/hers) Adult & Teen Services Librarian Adrian District Library 143 E. 14 Mar '22

Director - Durango Public Library (CO) The City of Durango seeks a collaborative team-builder as the next Director of the Durango Public Library<https://www.durangogov.org/1451/Library> (CO). Serving the 19,000+ residents of Durango from a 42,800-square-foot LEED Gold Certified building with a $2.8 million budget generated by a local joint sales tax, the new Director will have the opportunity to help write the library's next chapter and demonstrate how a modern, nimble library is a vital resource for the community. The ideal candidate will lead a staff of 21 FTE with a light-hearted approach that motivates staff; a commitment to being embedded in the community; and the ability to listen to diverse perspectives and foster programs and services that are reflective of Durango's diverse community. Key initiatives and opportunities include hiring a new Assistant Director, shaping library services post-COVID, leveraging relationships with surrounding library districts, maintaining a beautiful facility in an idyllic setting, developing a dynamic library culture, and being a part of the discussion exploring a shift of the library to a district model. Situated on the scenic Animas Valley and River in Southwestern Colorado, Durango is a full-service city with caring, educated, and creative residents who embrace inclusive thinking and are open to worldly conversations. As a picturesque example of high desert geography, Durango's natural beauty invites outdoor recreation 365 days a year. The area is home to multiple parks and trails like Mesa Verde National Park - a World Heritage site. The city is committed to keeping things local with a majority of its restaurants, stores, and boutiques being independently-owned and having more restaurants per capita than San Francisco! With its own Creative Arts District, artistic entrepreneurs are supported and provide a spark of energy and innovation that fuels organizations, activities, and events for the whole community. In the unlikely event, you have explored everything in Durango, it will be easy to travel elsewhere from the Durango-La Plata County Airport or just a day's drive from Phoenix, Denver, and Albuquerque. Durango values education and provides opportunities for lifelong learning through the Durango School District, Southwest Colorado Community College, or Fort Lewis College. Responsibilities include but are not limited to planning, directing, managing, and overseeing all activities, operations, and staff of the City's library; coordinating assigned activities with other City departments and outside agencies and participating as an active member of the Executive Leadership Team; managing the development and implementation of library goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for each assigned service area; selecting, training, motivating and evaluating library staff, providing or coordinating staff training; oversee, develop and administer the library budget; represent the library to other City departments, elected officials and outside agencies; maintaining effective work relationships with the Library Advisory Board, the Friends of the Library Board, and the Durango Botanic Gardens; and promoting an environment in which staff can provide proactive, friendly service to internal and external customers. Minimum qualifications include a bachelor's degree with eight (8) years of increasingly responsible professional library experience and three (3) years of supervisory experience required. Preferred skills and abilities include a master's degree in library science, demonstrating leadership and organizational agility, exhibiting strong strategic and operational decision-making skills, being flexible and open to change and new information, solving problems using education, job knowledge, logic, judgment, and data to determine effective solutions, and knowledge of the principles and practices of library science, business management, program development, and administration. Shifting Landscapes: Rethinking Masculinity -- 7pm tonight
by Thomas Trahey 14 Mar '22

14 Mar '22

*What*’*s In an Ideology and What Are the Consequences?: Rethinking Masculinity* Jessica Houser, Professor of Psychology at West Shore Community College, will look at the first-ever guidelines published in 2018 by the American Psychological Association (APA) for psychologists and others working with boys and men. During the pandemic, research revealed that working class men in America, from 25-55 years old have continued to die from suicide and harm from alcohol or drugs, also described as “deaths of despair,” at significantly greater rates than other Americans over the last several decades. While women are also dying from deaths of despair, men appear to be dying in greater numbers. Research indicates there are many factors leading to the deaths of despair among working class men, including lack of jobs and the resultant low or no income—and the toll this takes on pride and hope. But even when jobs have been available—those in the service sector—men either excluded themselves or were excluded from these jobs as they were deemed not appropriate for men. Houser will explore changing ideas about what it means to be a man. What is it about ideas of masculinity that prevent men from seeking work or being hired in the service sector? A focal point in looking at masculinity will be the 2018 APA guidelines developed to help boys and men lead healthier and happier lives. Houser will discuss the nature of the guidelines, including how the guidelines alter or strengthen earlier ideas about masculinity and about mental health for boys and men. Importantly, Houser will discuss criticism—both positive and negative—of the guidelines over the past 3 years. She will also note any changes made to the guidelines. House will consider with the audience whether the guidelines might lead men and society to healthier definitions of what it means to be a man. The final Truth & Politics event will take place March 21 - Communicating Across the Fence—or the Aisle, presented by Brian Harrison, visiting assistant professor of political science, Carleton College. The program begins at 7pm tonight, to simply join the Zoom presentation, go to mcdl.pub/sl-zoom. A recording will be available by Thursday morning. If you would like an emailed link to the recording, you can register at mcdl.pub/sl-register. -- Thomas Trahey Mason County District Library Head of Circulation 231-843-8465

You can purchase a copy of her book from bookshop.org to support local bookstores AND the Book and Author Society (BAS). More information is available at bookandauthor.org The Last Grand Duchess "Reads like a symphony, the last notes of the Romanovs vanishing with a staggering and tragic beauty." Erika Robuck, National bestselling author of The Invisible Woman Booklist Starred Review: "The Last Grand Duchess depicts a real family, with all their eccentricities and dynamics, while weaving in key details of the real Romanovs... both inspired and truthful." Publishers Weekly: "Turnbull again successfully humanizes a family of powerful historical figures... with a gift at making Olga's situation painfully tangible. This amply justifies taking another look at the lives of the condemned royals." Library Journal: "Turnbull pries off the veneer that masked Olga as a blue-blooded victim of the Bolshevik Revolution; instead, she gives Olga a three-dimensional personhood with a verve that evokes Scarlett O'Hara... an entrancing tribute." Historical Novel Society Editor's Choice: "I loved this novel, chiefly because of its deft characterizations... Even the most flawed characters have their redeeming points: there's not a cardboard villain to be found. Superbly written and researched, this is a novel I will be reading again."
