Michigan Cryptid Presenters
by Ashley Moran 11 May '26

11 May '26

Hello, Has anyone hosted a local presenter on Michigan Cryptids? I know that Oakland County has a program geared for kids where they discuss the real animals behind the legends, but I am looking for more of an adult centered, non-realistic (or is it?!) cryptid centered presentation. I'd love to hear any suggestions you may have. Thank you! -- *Ashley Moran **(she, her)* Marketing and Programs Manager Dolly Parton's Imagination Library of Commerce Township Main Coordinator Commerce Township Community Library Commerce Township, MI 248-669-8108 ext. 106 Currently Reading <https://www.goodreads.com/user/email_signature_destination/51322836?utm_med…> [image: Book Cover] <https://www.goodreads.com/user/email_signature_destination/51322836?utm_med…> [image: Goodreads Logo] <https://www.goodreads.com/?utm_medium=gr_logo&utm_source=email_signature>Get your own email signature <https://www.goodreads.com/user/email_signature_instructions?utm_medium=gyo_…> -- The information contained in this electronic message is intended only for the use of the designated recipient(s). PDF Editing Software
by Bruce MacDonald 11 May '26

11 May '26

What software is your library staff using to create and edit PDF documents? Adobe Acrobat Pro 2020 will cease to function 12/1/2026. Adobe is pushing for a subscription model, instead of selling us a version we can install and just use for a few years. We purchased our Adobe 2020 Pro licenses from TechSoup. To get discounted Acrobat Pro, you now must go through a company called Goodstack and buy individual licenses, a max of 10, that are each individually assigned to an end-user email address. These renew each year, you must pay for each license individually, and as far as I can tell there is no way to transfer a license to another user when there is turnover. TechSoup now sells Foxit PDF Editor+ instead of Acrobat Pro, and it seems to also have some extra hurdles for licensing that are off-putting. ---- [cid:image001.png@01DCDD64.8A41D2F0] Bruce MacDonald Head of Technology / Assistant Director Peter White Public Library<https://www.pwpl.info/> 217 N. by Kelly Bennett 10 May '26

10 May '26

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE The Library Network’s Book & Author Society Announces Return of Grant Program and Welcomes Bestselling Author Marjan Kamali This September NOVI, Mich. – The Book & Author Society (BAS) is proud to share two exciting announcements with Michigan’s library community: the return of its small grant program and an upcoming “In Conversation” event featuring award-winning and New York Times bestselling author Marjan Kamali. For the first time since 2020, BAS will award one public library in Michigan a $1,000 Collection Grant intended to help launch or enhance a circulating collection. The grant is designed to increase patron engagement by supporting collections that reflect diverse community needs. Libraries are encouraged to apply with proposals ranging from expanding world language materials and graphic novel collections to enhancing digital resources such as audiobooks. Applications for the Collection Grant will open June 1, 2026, and close July 13, 2026, with the selected library notified in late July. The grant will be formally presented on September 14, 2026, during BAS’s author event featuring Marjan Kamali. Additional details, including the application link and evaluation rubric, will be shared in late May. Information and links can also be found on [ http://bookandauthor.org/ | bookandauthor.org ] . Book and Author Society Event – September 14, 2026 BAS’s September 14, 2026 author event follows the Society’s highly successful 2025 relaunch featuring author Kate Quinn, which drew more than 450 attendees. This fall, the event will be once again be held at Schoolcraft College’s Vistatech Center and will feature a captivating evening of conversation with Kamali. Kamali, author of the instant national bestseller The Lion Women of Tehran and the internationally acclaimed novel The Stationery Shop , has earned global recognition with her work, published in more than 25 languages. A recipient of the 2022 National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Fellowship, she will join Cathy Russ, Director of the West Bloomfield Township Public Library and Chair of the BAS Committee, for a candid discussion followed by a book signing. Just like last year, Book and Author Society and The Library Network invite area public libraries to feature one of Marjan Kamali’s books as a selection for their book clubs. Many book clubs used BAS’s in-person event last year as an outing after reading a Kate Quinn book. Even if you don’t choose to involve your book club, we would appreciate you posting one of the attached flyers after May 11. Event registration opens May 11 , with early bird tickets priced at $30 and general admission at $35 after August 17. Proceeds from ticket sales help fund BAS programming and grant opportunities for Michigan libraries. Tickets will be available at [ http://www.bookandauthor.org/ | www.bookandauthor.org ] Please visit bookandauthor.org for more information. Invitation to an Interactive Genealogy Workshop by Katherine R. Willson at the Pinckney Library titled: "America’s Story: Opportunity, Diversity, and Belonging Across 250 Years"
by Hope Siasoco 09 May '26

09 May '26

Dear Michigan Library Colleagues, (Please excuse the cross-posting.) The Pinckney Library (125 Putnam St., Pinckney, MI 48169) is hosting an interactive genealogy workshop by Katherine R. Willson on *Saturday, May 16th at 11am to 1pm* as a tie-in program celebrating the 250th Anniversary of the Founding of the United States of America. *Description:* *"America’s Story: Opportunity, Diversity, and Belonging Across 250 Years" <https://pinckneylibrary.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Americas-Story-May-1…>* America’s story is one of families seeking opportunity while facing exclusion and hardship. This interactive presentation follows that story across many communities, including Native Americans, early colonial settlers, African Americans, and European immigrants of the 19th and 20th centuries. It explores how people moved through a rapidly changing country, sometimes by choice and sometimes under pressure, and how immigrants and other marginalized groups navigated questions of rights, identity, and belonging. Guided reflection encourages attendees to consider how opportunity, resilience, and exclusion shaped these communities, with practical ideas for preserving those stories for future generations. This 2-hour workshop expands on the lecture with step-by-step guidance for writing ancestral stories of opportunity, exclusion, and resilience, along with a demonstration of how to preserve those stories on major genealogy websites. *NOTE: *This is an In Person event at the Pinckney Library (125 Putnam St., Pinckney, MI 48169) and will not be recorded. Registration is required and can be done by calling the library at 734-878-3888 or going to: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfJneL2Pt_krK6jsVoy11bx7hq3H3bt4db… or scanning the QR code on the flier. Encyclopedias/Reference Materials?
by Tahquamenon Library Director 08 May '26

08 May '26

Hello Librarians, These questions are aimed more towards the various school-public libraries, but could be applicable to everyone: How often do you modernize your reference sections? - Is it on a rolling basis, or an all-at-once deal? How broad of a reference section do you maintain? - Do Mel resources supplement your reference, or have they replaced them? I would like to structure reference modernization into our acquisitions, but with the prevalence of the internet, we have seen declining use of the resources by our students and public. An attempt at increasing circulation was made some years ago by moving some materials into the non-fiction sections, but that has not helped to a large extent. Thanks, Ross
