Unearth a Story™ for summer library programming!

[cid:062f2501-e6c9-4345-9bb7-115e210acad1] The Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) is excited to announce its 2026 program with the all-ages theme of dinosaurs, paleontology, and archaeology and the slogan Unearth a Story™ featuring artwork by Tom Bonson. CSLP member libraries across the country chose this theme because these topics are high-interest areas, offering rich opportunities to spark curiosity, imagination, and learning across all age groups. The slogan Unearth a Story™ was chosen to align with this theme in a way that invites layered interpretation. Whether readers are digging into a good book, uncovering hidden histories, or exploring the past, the slogan underscores the joy of discovery that reading brings. It also emphasizes that every person and every community has stories waiting to be found and shared—through books, programs, and local knowledge. Every Michigan public library has access to the CSLP manual online<https://forms.gle/b2vf7DroM6d8eSt27>. The CSLP manual is an ideabook of programs, booklists, printables, and other resources that you may use in planning and producing your summer library program. It also includes a collection of posters, banners, art spots, and other graphics files to accompany the Unearth a Story™ theme. The 2026 CSLP manual also features a chapter of Celebrating America 250™ program ideas for all ages. Public library directors received an email last week with the manual code to forward on to summer library programming staff. Hello! Do you have library law related questions like: " As part of a Halloween program, a library staff member dressed in an inflated "Bluey" costume to hand out candy. While distributing candy the staff member tripped and fell over a young patron. A portion of the inflated costume ended up on top of that young patron. No one was hurt, but a local news crew were covering the event and the image of a child seeming crushed by Bluey went viral on social media. Can the owners of Bluey sue for "reputational damage?"" Or "A library's Halloween celebrations typically include an encouragement (but not requirement) for staff members to wear costumes during work hours on the day of the annual Halloween program. A staff member creates an impressive "Elphaba" costume modeled after the Broadway play "Wicked." On the day of the celebration the staff member arrives in the remarkably realistic costume complete with head-to-toe green make-up. While the staff member was working at the information desk, a patron approaches and asks the staff member to remove the costume because it was offensive to the patron, who is a practicing Wiccan. The patron is referred to the library director who conveys the library's regret at the patron's offense and agrees to ask the staff member to remove the costume after the Halloween program. As the program is ending, the patron approaches the staff member, steals the handmade witch's hat from the staff member's head, crushes it, yelling "Hater!" On their way out of the library, still carrying the demolished hat, the patron vows a religious discrimination lawsuit. The staff member , taken by surprise, steps back, into another participant, whose full bottle of water is upended onto the staff member and the expensive silk and chiffon costume. Afterwards the staff member requests that the library reimburse her for the cost of the costume- including labor. Is the library responsible for the damage to the costume? The Library of Michigan is pleased to announce additional eContent available at MeL! We have added additional library science titles, digital literacy titles and American history titles this year to the Gale eBooks collection. * Library Science - We have added 36 Libraries Unlimited titles and 17 more ALA titles. * Digital Literacy - We have added 10 additional digital literacy titles. * America250 - We have added 35 American history titles. Answers to LocalHop or Other Calendar Software

Hi Everyone, Thank you to all the super helpful responses regarding your use of Local Hop, the cost, or what else you might like for calendar / reservation software! I had lots of interest in the answers, so I took out identifying info and am posting the answers below: *** We have the LocalHop event calendar embedded in our website. I believe we pay about $500/yr. Can't remember if they use legal service population in calculating the charge or not. So, just in case, we serve a population of 27,380. We've used Library Calendar from Library Market<https://www.librarymarket.com/> for the last year and a half. I'm not sure of the pricing, but I can connect you with someone who would know. We had used a different product before, but it was discontinued. On the patron end, it is easy to sign up for programs. On my end, as a librarian who does programs, it took some time to get used to, but I find it to be user-friendly. I think the most challenging part is that there is a lot of information to enter when registering for an event, so you want to click all the dropdown menus to ensure you are entering the correct information. We use Assabet software for program & event registration. We really like it; it has made program & event registration so much easier! They offer a module for room reservations too, but we do that ourselves. We pay about $800/year for the event registration. https://www.assabetinteractive.com/ The ***Library is a Class V library and we recently contracted with Library Market for our website update and included their Library Calendar module to the site as well. Our new site launches to the public 10/15/25. We are very happy working with this vendor and the cost was reasonable for the work they did/do. Here is their website: https://www.librarymarket.com/ Here is the link to their product Library Calendar: https://www.librarymarket.com/library-calendar Cost was $25,000 all in for website redesign and implementation of Library Calendar module. Going with just the Library Calendar module is possible and costs considerably less money. We use LocalHop for room reservation and web calendar. The web calendar is around $600 and the room reservation is for $2900. Hope that helps - they charge you based on the number of rooms so if you have less rooms then it would be cheaper. We use Local Hop – it costs us $123/year. We use the calendar embedded in our website, but not the room reservation part. For reference, we have an approximately 7,000 person service area if that matters. We use LibCal from Springshare, and it works very well. We had Local Hop for maybe two years, and my staff complained about it constantly! They didn't like the back end because you couldn't see all the information (date, set-up, description, etc.) on one page. It was not that intuitive, hard to update, and didn't work well for our three branches. It might work better for one, though. We switched to Library Market, and everyone is really happy. Seeking Meeting Room Policy Samples

Hello all, Our meeting room policy is decades all, and has, for the most part, served us well. However, the spaces we have available and how people are using those spaces has changed quite a bit, including a surprising spike of some folks scheduling physical health checks at the library. I'm seeking samples from other libraries of their meeting room policies to see what we should consider addressing.
