Central Michigan University Presentation - Camden Burd on the Upper Peninsula Secession Movement

On Wednesday, October 20, at 7:00 pm EDT, the Clarke Historical Library at Central Michigan University will host the second of four presentations as part of the Clarke's Virtual Fall Speakers Series (you can find the entire line-up on the Clarke's website<https://www.cmich.edu/library/clarke/publicprograms/current_exhibit/pages/d…>). Camden Burd, professor of history at Eastern Illinois University, will join us to talk about the effort to create a 51st state - Superior. In the mid-twentieth century, a secession movement took hold in the Upper Peninsula. Camden Burd will discuss the immediate and long-term political implications of the push to found the State of Superior. This presentation is free and open to the public. The event will be broadcast via Central Michigan University's videoconferencing tool, Webex, and it will be recorded to enjoy at a later time. COSLA is collaborating with the New York Times to help bring clarity to this question. Please join us on Thursday, October 14th 330-5pm ET to start the conversation on how this can be achieved. Session Synopsis: Amidst a polarized national climate, both public libraries and journalism publications share a responsibility to inform the public and remain balanced. They both also work to foster community and build bridges. How do they each navigate this responsibility? How do they champion the truth, while remaining balanced and providing a space for discourse? What is the importance of media literacy for the future? How do we vet the truth and grapple with misinformation? We will hear from state librarians Lauren Moore (NY), Sara Jones (WA), and New York Times journalists on what it takes to champion the truth and serve readers and community members in this moment. Free Shifting Landscapes event with philosopher and ethicist Stephen Esquith, Ph.D.

Mason County District Library and Abondia Center continue the new public lecture series, Shifting Landscapes, on Monday, October 18, with Strangers: Who Are We? at 7-8:30 pm at the Ludington Area Center for the Arts, and on Zoom, featuring MSU philosopher ethicist Stephen Esquith. Stephen Esquith will explore the most expansive experience of community yet in the series, our relation to strangers. "I am interested,” Esquith commented, “how our responsibilities to strangers might have shifted as a result of Covid-19. How have our lives in cyberspace (e.g., on Zoom, social media) affected our responsibilities to others? Have we created new connections with others who were not visible to us before?” Esquith also notes, “We’ll also consider such questions as, “Have our responsibilities to those previously close to us been weakened by this shift from physical to virtual presence? What does it mean to think of others as 'distant strangers,’ or does this term make less sense now that we are more virally as well as virtually connected?” This event is free to you and to your patrons. Survey: Patrons and Conspiracy Theories

Hi all, please see below for details of a research study that a colleague and I are conducting. This is a follow-up to our article "A call to action for librarians: Countering conspiracy theories in the age of QAnon <https://digitalrepository.unm.edu/ulls_fsp/174/>," and we hope to hear from you! ______ You are invited to participate in a research survey about interactions with patrons concerning conspiracy theories and related phenomena. Should you choose to participate, we expect the survey to take 15-20 minutes to complete. Unless you choose to self-identify, your response will be completely anonymous. You may request a summary of the survey results after participating. Your involvement in the survey is voluntary, and you may exit at any time. The findings from this project will provide information on the needs of librarians and other library staff when interacting with patrons who exhibit conspiracy ideation. This research has been approved by Oakland University's Office of IRB (IRB-FY2021-410).
