Larry Martin Program Recommendation

Hi Everyone! I see that everyone has been recommending Larry Martin and World War II program lately, so I'll throw in my two cents too! I used to work at the Clarkston Independence District Library, and we hosted him through Zoom twice (I don't mean to brag, but we were the first library that he did his program virtually). He was funny, informative, and great with the attendees! The interviews were wonderful as well! I know that he's been looking for more libraries to present his program at, and it's certainly worth it whether you have him in person or online! The Book and Author Society is having their first live event since COVID started! The success of this event will help the Society restart the grant-giving process for libraries and literacy organizations, so your support means a lot. - What: An in-person author talk and book signing with refreshments and a copy of the book. Unvaccinated Staff

Hello! Now that all the COVID restrictions have been lifted and we only have to follow the (very vague and non-committal) OSHA rules, I was wondering what everyone is doing about unvaccinated staff. Do you make them wear a mask? Do you try to separate them from the rest of your staff? Or do you let them roam free? Matt Willis Named New Willard Library Director

Willard Library has big news to share: Matt Willis, currently deputy director of operations for Willard Library in Battle Creek, has been selected to be the new director of the library after Catherine Christ Lucas retires June 30. On Tuesday, the library board of trustees unanimously voted to offer the director job to Willis, who has been with the library for 20 years. We hosted author and Holocaust survivor Irene Miller last week at Commerce Township Community Library, and I'm adding my name to the long list of people who recommended her. We had a great turnout and it's still generating buzz in our community this week. She stayed and answered questions after her lecture, she took pictures with patrons when requested, and she gladly signed copies of her book. These are just a few of the interactive, multimodal, play-based spaces that the youngest patrons of the Calgary Public Library can enjoy. So much more than quiet repositories for books, the library's children's departments have been reimagined and rebuilt as innovative Early Learning Centres. In Bay City*, Mich., likewise, young visitors to the library will see a stately, historical, Victorian Gothic façade from the outside but can experience forward-thinking, innovative learning spaces on the inside. The library was built in 1884, yet its approach to early childhood education is decidedly 21st-century. As the Calgary Public Library's "Early Learning Strategy" puts it, "Children and their caregivers must be supported early on, well before kids begin school. Public libraries are uniquely positioned to support engagement in early learning because we are accessible and free." The Calgary Public Library and the Bay County Library System have something else in common. They've both adopted LENA Start as part of their mission to elevate early learning. During the program, LENA's "talk pedometer" technology measures key components of children's language environments, and parents attend weekly sessions to learn strategies for increasing interactive talk in the home.
