Clarification regarding large-format printer for StoryWalk project
by Heather Harrison 10 Nov '22

10 Nov '22

Just for clarification: I will not be printing the books/stories themselves, but rather using the large-format printer to print footers for display pages, as well as Intro and Ending display pages. Thanks! I'm in the process of planning a StoryWalk(r) for our district and I'm looking at the possibility of a large-format printer for this purpose. I'm curious if anyone has experience and suggestions on a brand/model of large-format printer that works well and is relatively easy to use. I need one that can accommodate 18x24 inch rolls of paper. How often do you need to change your ink cartridges, as I will likely have at least two StoryWalk(r) locations and potentially three in the future. Do you use the printer for projects other than Story Walks, posters, banners? We were thinking of using it to create large coloring sheets for group coloring. Thanks, Heather Heather Harrison Youth Services Librarian Genesee District Library 4195 W Pasadena Ave., Flint, MI 48504 810-230-3332 hharrison(a)thegdl.org

Library of Things Ideas?
by Chantell J Graves 10 Nov '22

10 Nov '22

Hello, Library Land! Alma College is considering adding a "Library of Things" to our collection, and we're looking for some input from other small academic libraries. What items/objects have been of use to your students, faculty, or staff? Any other input is appreciated as well, such as budgeting, staffing, workflow, organization/shelving, etc... For those of you wondering what the heck I'm talking about... a library of things is a collection of items that typically fit into categories like hobbies, technology, outdoor activities, games, teaching materials, STEM kits, and much more! Thanks for all you do, [alma college logo bw] Chantell Graves, B.S. Ed. (she/her) Library Services Coordinator | Alma College Library Alma College, 614 W. Through this program, we took a different approach to get kids excited about learning healthy habits. The idea for the program started with the Disgusting Critters<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcslpreads…> book series. The staff enjoyed these books and thought it would be entertaining and educational to have an event that was "gross." We wanted the party to be fun but also serve as an opportunity to share information about health and being healthy. Volunteers from the Dollar General Store joined us and helped with some of the many stations that were set up in the youth department. The library collaborated with the local Extension Office to provide some snacks that looked disgusting but tasted good. Some of the snacks the library provided included Cricket Bites and Larvets Original Worm Snax. At each station, we had books for checkout that talked about the importance of that "gross" thing. For example, we had a booger-bowling game, and at this station, we included books on the significance of snot. There was also a poo-throwing game with books about digestion and scat. A staff member created a cardboard toilet, and we purchased poop emoji toys for the kids to throw. There was a slime station and a soda station with sodas from Lester's Fixins<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcslpreads…> that included flavors such as corn, ranch, and bacon. Many families took pictures and videos of themselves trying bugs and drinking sodas, which was fun for everyone. If you are looking for a fun way to share health information, I highly recommend throwing a disgusting party. Public libraries feed hungry bodies as well as hungry minds during the summer - and throughout the year. The CSLP's Child and Community Well-Being committee encourages library involvement in activities that support wellness, from summer and afterschool meals, to well-being programming, to support for basic needs, all to help children, teens, and communities stay nourished, active, and healthy when school is out. Resources include the Libraries and Summer Food<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcslpreads…> page on the CSLP website; a Facebook group<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcslpreads…> for news, support, and resource-sharing; and an ongoing series of stories showcasing the experiences of libraries around the country.
