Library Pen Pal Program
by Director 15 Mar '23

15 Mar '23

Good morning everyone, My library staff came up with a great idea to go along with this year's "All Together Now" summer reading program, wherein we would set up a pen pal program with the Indian River County Library in Florida, active throughout SRP (from one Indian River to another). However, I am having a hard time working out the details around what this process would look like - if your library has done a pen pal program, can you share the procedure and any other information that would help guide us? Thank you in advance and I am happy to share responses! Best, Kelsey Rutkowski *--------------------------------------* *Library Director* *Indian River Area Library* 3546 S Straits Hwy PO Box 160 Indian River, MI 49749 (231) 238-8581 indianriverlibrary.org

Michigan eLibrary Update Regarding Scholastic Resources
by Wood-Gramza, Heather (MDE) 14 Mar '23

14 Mar '23

Hi Everyone, It has come to my attention that all Scholastic resources have been removed from EBSCO databases and as a result are no longer available through the Michigan eLibrary. It is not unusual for changes to be made in what is offered through aggregators like EBSCO. However, the magnitude of this change and its potential impact on MeL users-especially our K-12 community necessitates special mention. Here's what we know right now: * It appears Scholastic is not renewing its contracts with ANY content aggregators. * EBSCO removed the content as soon as they were notified the contract would not be renewed. * We are aware of the challenges this presents to those who depend on this content for use in the classroom and beyond. * This change should be considered permanent. As always, if you have any questions or concerns regarding access to any of our eResources available through MeL, please contact our MeL team members at MCLS at melerhelp(a)mcls.org<mailto:melerhelp@mcls.org> or 517.939.1384. Outreach Question
by Elizabeth Koroleski 14 Mar '23

14 Mar '23

Hello everyone! I started working at the Bad Axe Area District Library and I am slowly becoming in charge of our outreach with our Bookmobile (going out once a week with different stops every other week). We currently have stops at a couple preschools, a couple one-room country schools, our senior center, and at the elementary school at dismissal. My director, Briynne McCrea, had thought that possibly stopping at one of our nursing homes would be a good addition to one of our weeks (or maybe just monthly- nothing is set in stone yet). Her thoughts were that we could deliver books/audiobooks to residents and to connect them to other things like interlibrary loans and the Michigan Braille and Talking Library. My questions for any of you who have done something like this: -What kind of process did you go through overall? (Briynne has already reached out to the nursing home director so we have the contact, but nothing has been started) -What kind of form do you use for residents? -Does it have them asking for genres, specific authors, specific books, etc.? -What are issues that you have run into? -How do you go through the selection of items? Thank you so much for any and all help and insight- it is all greatly appreciated! Sincerely, Elizabeth Koroleski Library Clerk/Outreach Bad Axe Area District Library
