Weekly updates from ARSL Get Ready to UNITE & IGNITE in Wichita! ARSL Conference | September 20-23, 2023 | Wichita, KS [https://s3.amazonaws.com/oasis-prod01-unlayer/1678836159847-ARSL23+logo.png] This year's conference theme is "Unite & Ignite"! Our conference provides an opportunity to unite as a professional community and foster a sense of togetherness across a nation of small but mighty libraries. When we come together to share and learn we'll light fires of innovation and change that can burn bright all year long. Conference Program Request for Proposals (RFP) launches next week! Are you a community engagement superstar? Have a storytime formula that can't be beat? Do your reader's advisory recommendations always hit the mark? We need YOU to present at ARSL 2023! The program presenters are the heart of the conference, bringing valuable skills and experience to share with fellow attendees. RFP Launch Date: March 21, 2023 Submission Deadline: April 25, 2023, 5:00 pm CT Ready to get started? Download the sample RFP form<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Farsl.membe…> to preview the questions. Check out our Tips for a Great Program Proposal<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Farsl.membe…> to help polish your submission! New this year: Pop-Up Program Demos If the thought of lecturing at the front of the room turns your legs to jelly our pop-up program demos might be the opportunity you've been waiting for! These 20-minute sessions will give presenters the opportunity to demo a craft or other library program formula for small groups of attendees. These practical, actionable demo sessions will let programming pros share their ideas in a less intimidating, more familiar environment. Special consideration will be given to pop-up demos that incorporate intentional accessibility for patrons of different ages and ability levels. Professional Networking & Affinity Groups Volunteers needed! The ARSL Membership Committee is seeking a few additional volunteers to help start our Professional Networking Groups this year! Building on the success of the Solo-ish Librarians Happy Hour pioneered by ARSL members Bree Drapa and Chelsea Price, the Membership Committee wants to provide dedicated time and space for ARSL members to connect with others in their area of professional focus (youth services, administration, cataloging, etc.) or who exist at similar intersections of identity within the librarianship community. We currently need leaders for the following networking groups: * Circulation Services * BIPOC Librarians * LGBTQ+ Librarians Have an idea for an affinity group not listed on the volunteer form? Suggestions are welcome if you're willing to lead them! All networking groups will be held in ARSL Zoom rooms on a standing monthly schedule. Meetings will be drop-in style, with no obligation to stay the full hour. Networking groups (with the exception of the existing Solo-ish Librarians HH) are open to ARSL members only. [Volunteer as a Networking Lead] Become an ARSL Hero! Want your organization listed here? Join the ARSL Supporters Alliance at the Hero level to show your support of rural and small libraries to 7,000+ library workers, advocates, and fans every week! Other Hero level benefits include a complimentary exhibit booth at our annual conference, coordinated social media cross-promotion, and more! LCLS is an award-winning library system that sets the bar for service regionally and nationally. Named the Library of the Year by Gale/Library Journal in 2008, Nancy Pearl told USA Today that Laramie County Library System was one of the top ten libraries in the country to "find a nook and read a book." Livablity.com and mommynearest.com named LCLS as one of the top ten children's libraries in the United States. Employees and volunteers are often recognized with regional and national awards. The population served is 102,266 in the county with around 65,061 in the Greater Cheyenne Area. The talented and experienced 76 staff members serve over 72,000 registered users with an annual budget of $10.5 million with a collection size of over 425,000 items via three locations (Cheyenne, Burns, and Pine Bluffs) and a very popular bookmobile. In 2021, voters passed a specific purpose tax to replace the 16-year-old vehicle currently in use and it is estimated that a new vehicle will be acquired by FY2025. Other major projects in the next two years include adding a home visit specialist to the First Steps outreach program, installing interactive reading readiness interactives in the library in Cheyenne and in businesses in the community, coordinating another StoryWalk® installation, and managing an increase in funding for events from a major bequest. LCLS is a member of a statewide consortium with a shared catalog among all 23 public library systems, all community college libraries, and several special libraries in the state of Wyoming. LCLS is financially supported through property taxes, auto license fees, and a portion of the county's one-cent sales tax. LCLS is fortunate enough to be supported through the Laramie County Library Foundation, which is a nonprofit organization engaging in fundraising efforts on behalf of the library. The Youth & Outreach Services Manager is responsible for the organization, management, supervision, and effective functioning of the Youth & Outreach Services division (YOS) including the day-to-day management of employees, as well as the following services: bookmobile/homebound services, outreach, public service, programming, events, tours/bibliographic instruction, grant writing, community partnerships, and employee training and development. The team consists of 11.39 FTE (13 employees) with six of the employees having an MLS/MLIS. The individual in this position manages an annual budget of $150,000 to $200,000 for youth and teen collections, events, outreach, summer reading, and First Step activities. This position is a member of the LCLS Leadership Team and reports to the Deputy Director of Public Service. Qualifications: A master's degree in Library Science or Library Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution; 3 years of experience in each of the following: working in public libraries, planning and implementing events/programs, management/supervising, or an equivalent combination of education and experience are required. QCD letters to share?
by Perri Saunders 16 Mar '23

16 Mar '23

We are a new 501(c)(3) library. I'm learning from a patron that when he does a Qualified Charitable Distribution (donation as an IRA distribution), we are to issue him a QCD letter for his taxes. I have found a couple of samples online, but if you could share your library-specific letter, I would be forever grateful. Have a great day! Portrait of Dorothy Paad <https://UPPAA.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b1016c5c910959a236f2ff48f&i…>*DOROTHY PAAD* loves to create – whether it is a song, a dance, a theater production, or book. She doesn’t let having Cerebral Palsy stand in her way! It was during the COVID-19 pandemic that Dorothy was inspired to write her first book hoping to inspire kids in a way she wishes she had been. Today, she continues to share her story so that others may realize their potential and never stop pursuing their dreams. Dorothy puts her heart and soul into all that she does. Each of her books reflects important moments in her life and highlights the people who have supported her along the way. Among the many people that have inspired her work are her father, Eric and brother, Andrew, who served in the United States Air Force and United States Army respectively; and her best friend and role model, Alice, whom she calls, mom. In addition to her work in the writing and performing arts, Dorothy also works as an advocate for individuals with disabilities and caregivers as the spokesperson for the Caregiver Incentive Project. Her own in-home caregiver, Tracy, makes a valuable difference in her life — helping her to live her life to the fullest. In an effort to prepare future teachers for inclusive classrooms, Dorothy is also an Instructional Coach for the Northern Michigan University School of Education. She is the recipient of a MI-UCP (United Cerebral Palsy Association) Closing the Disability Divide Award and a volunteer with Lake Superior Life Care & Hospice. Dorothy is also a member of the Upper Peninsula Publishers & Authors Association and Marquette Alger Reading Council. Cover of Dorothy's book "Dorothy is Moving Mountains" <https://UPPAA.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b1016c5c910959a236f2ff48f&i…>"The visceral honesty of Dorothy Paad’s stories is what makes them relatable to the universal human experience. For example, she does not shy away from the factors that gave her trepidation before taking the plunge (literally) into adaptive skiing. First she must confront the fallout from years of bullying in high school which has destroyed her confidence, something that many readers will relate to. Next she must face Sensory Processing Disorder, a condition which may affect balance, hearing and other brain activity which could be overstimulated by a fast ski ride down the mountain. On the first day she has to overcome her fear of going too fast, falling over, or getting hurt. Like many young people, Dorothy is nervous meeting new adults – the ski instructors – for the first time. Last, but not least, Dorothy has a twinge of separation anxiety. As someone who is very attached to her mom and dad, going without them down the mountain was just one more stressor. How will Dorothy do on her maiden voyage down the mountain? I wouldn’t dare spoil that for you, dear reader! / Dorothy is Moving Mountains /is at its core a reflection of how the human spirit can triumph over any disability, any circumstance, and any disadvantage through courage, support, and a willingness to be helped. I give /Dorothy is Moving Mountains/ the highest recommendation for schools, libraries, families, and anyone who needs a lift about rising above their own circumstances, whatever they may be. The only writer I’ve ever met who could be as truthful about disabilities in children’s books was the late Michelle Katyal (pen name “Jewel Kats”) with her book /The Princess Panda Tea Party: A Cerebral Palsy Fairy Tale/ (2014). I’m happy to say Dorothy has picked up the torch for a new generation. —Review by Victor R. Volkman, Superior Reads in the /Marquette Monthly /(March 2023) More information about the U.P.
