Come explore Youth Voice & Choice at this workshop via a framework for teen services called Connected Learning (CL) that uses the building blocks of teen interests, relationships with peers and caring adults and opportunities (from college and career to leadership and civic engagement). This workshop will also cover the basics of Computational Thinking (CT), which is a problem-solving framework, not coding or computer science -- and no technology is required! This is a great way for library staff who are less comfortable with tech to build STEM programs. This workshop is participatory & hands-on, and will help participants scaffold knowledge they may already have about CL and CT and use it to recognize the ways in which CT supports CL. That week, and every week, parents should have conversations with their teens about the important rules they need to follow to stay safe behind the wheel of a motor vehicle and even as a passenger. With the help of involved parents, teens can become safer, smarter drivers. Teen drivers with actively involved parents are half as likely to be involved in a crash. To help parents manage their teens' driving and keep them safe, the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning (OHSP) has created a Parent Toolkit and video<https://www.michigan.gov/msp/divisions/ohsp/safety-programs/teen-drivers/te…>. Branch Head, Zauel Memorial Library, Public Libraries of Saginaw: Library system with four outlets needs an organized, community-minded and dedicated person to supervise the Zauel Branch Library. Duties and responsibilities: This position involves supervision of library operation on a day-to-day basis, including staff supervision, materials selection, provision of reference and Reader's Advisor service, preparation and submission of budget requests, and other duties as assigned. The individual must be particularly skilled in planning, implementing, and evaluating public library services and will work with the Library Director to accomplish objectives. Heavy emphasis will also be placed on interaction and planning of library services with various community organizations and the Saginaw Township Board. Minimum education and experience: Requires a master's degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA accredited program and five years of public library experience. Preference will be given to applicants with strong supervisory experience and a working knowledge of current technology. Salary range: $59,923 - $75,520 in six steps. Excellent benefit package. Hiring: Youth Services Librarian

Vicksburg District Library is seeking applicants for the position of Youth Services Librarian. Hours: 30 hours per week Pay and Compensation: $19-21/hour depending on experience and qualifications. Sick leave is earned on a monthly basis and becomes available after 30 days of employment. Vacation time becomes available after one year of employment and begins at one week of time. Job Duties Include: * Providing services in keeping with the American Library Association’s “Library Bill of Rights” statement. * Planning and conducting programs for Babies and toddlers (ages 1-4 years) and preschool (ages 4-5); Children in grades 1-5 and Tweens in grades 6-8; Teens in grades 9-12. * Helping children with reference questions, using computers, and suggesting titles. * Educating children and teens in using library services. * Preparing displays, hand-outs, bulletin boards, and other content as needed. * Staying aware of current trends in librarianship to skillfully, * Provide Collection Development including selecting books, audiobooks, and CDs for the Young Adult and Children’s collections. Recommending YA and Children's movie purchases to the Director. * Weed damaged/outdated materials which the library should no longer store. * Enforcing library policies. Assisting at the Circulation Desk and in the building as necessary. Participating in the monthly staff meeting; * Able to work some evenings/weekends in support of programming; * Other duties as assigned by the Director. Programming Duties Include: * Succeeding at year-round planning and preparation. * Adopting existing programming and creating new programs which serve the community. * Conducting weekly programs for children and teens. * Creating the annual seven week Summer Reading Program, which may include scheduling performers, generating activities, and hosting an End of Summer Reading Party. * Promoting programs in the community. Coordinating with local schools to provide outreach programs in the school system. Qualifications and Work Experience: * Minimum of an Associate’s degree in a relevant field such as Public Education or Library and Information Science. Program Recommendation: Nectar & Thorns by Raymond Goodwin

Good morning all! How often do you have the chance to schedule a thespian and a professional dancer at your library? Ray Goodwin reached out to me interested in presenting his solo play entitled, Nectar & Thorns. He travels with a fellow artist, Kathryn Zettel (as her schedule allows), so she incorporates original dance and original music with his play. It is really incredible to see! Nectar & Thorns is the story of three young adults traversing the Cold War era with many references and recollections about the Vietnam War. Ray blends a love story beautifully into this plot without taking away from the importance of the topic. While some material may be sensitive to some patrons, we did not have any objections or problems. I simply added into the marketing for this program that if anyone needs to leave during a sensitive moment in the play, we recommend they sit in the back so they can leave quickly and easily.
