The Ypsilanti District Library is partnering with the Ann Arbor Area SCORE office and PayChex to present two free virtual programs on HR topics that may be of interest to library staff or to library patrons. These programs will be on Zoom, are free, and you do NOT need to have a YDL library card to attend, you just need to register on the event pages so that I can send you the Zoom information. circulating CD player question

Hello, If you circulate CD players, could you share which ones you have and how durable they are? We started circulating CD players so patrons can continue using our BCD collection now that most computers, vehicles, homes, etc. no longer have CD players. We circulate them in protective cases. They have been very popular and are always checked out. However, they have stopped working after just a few circs. (We DO have newer audiobook formats - Playaways, VOX books, Wonderbooks, ebooks - but would also like to extend the life of our BCD collection while we continue to build the newer collections.) We're hoping to continue being able to have CD players for check out, but need them to last longer. We're not sure if they stop working because the device just stops or if it is due to how they are handled. If you circulate CD players and have any recommendations either for long-lasting devices or protective cases, please let us know. Here are the two we have now. Thousands crossed the river to freedom in Canada from Detroit. Detroit abolitionists helped freedom seekers from the south evade slave catchers and local law enforcement on their way to Canada. Detroit’s abolitionist community were fierce in their support of runaways in the face of severe local opposition. Despite this opposition, Detroit’s abolitionists persisted. The inclusion committee selected this topic at a time when the LGBTQIA+ community has especially been a target of violence, and books with representative characters and stories are being challenged. It is vital for all youth to find representation in books, and to feel safe in welcoming, inclusive spaces. This training would provide information on how to be a better ally and develop cultural competencies. During the training, attendees learned about historical context, shared language, and inclusive best practices using pronouns. We also discussed implicit bias and the levels of bias, including individual, organizational, systemic bias, and the process of becoming a disruptor. Disruptors support diversity in the community and the coming out process, calling out negative behavior toward LGBTQIA+ youth to create a safe space. Amanda also shared insight on creating library programs, such as book clubs, story times, and other LGBTQIA+ specific programs. After the presentation portion, a safe space was created for attendees to ask any questions they might have about the LGBTQIA+ community. Action steps and a list of resources were shared at the end.
