VOX books
by Sarah Skinner 22 Aug '23

22 Aug '23

Hello, Library Land! BPL is adding VOX books to our collection! We are looking at best practices for these awesome books. My cataloging gal and I were wondering if we could get your collective input on the following questions: 1. Do you use any sort of zippered bag/pouch for circulation or do they go out like any other book? 2. Do you have any sort of agreement/waiver for checkout (similar to Library of Things or tech equipment)? 3. Do you send the charger home with the patron, too, or do staff recharge them upon check in? Thank you in advance for any information you can provide! Kind regards, Sarah Skinner, MLIS Executive Director (she/her) *"The most important asset of any library goes home at night – the library staff." ~**Timothy Healy*

Read to Grow Trees at the Brandon Township Public Library >From Laura Fromwiller, Director The Brandon Township Public Library in Ortonville, MI is on a mission to add trees to our local park! Through a collaboration with our township's Parks and Recreation department, library patrons are actively reading for a good cause. For every 20 minutes patrons read, they fill in a leaf on their Read to Grow Trees Tracker. Once they fill in 15 leaves they turn in the card for a leaf to write their name on and add to our goal tree wall. For every 100 leaves, the library will donate one tree. The more patrons read, the more trees we plant! Brandon Township is fortunate to have a beautiful park that contains a Living Tree Library that was started back in 2006. Since then, through grants and donations it has grown to 9 acres and over 200 trees with a 1/3 mile sidewalk to enjoy. With financial support from the Friends of the Brandon Township Public Library, 5 different species of trees will be planted in the tree library to commemorate the 150,000 minutes of reading accomplished by our patrons. A true community collaboration that was done all together! **Update from Brandon Township Public Library** - Our patrons surpassed our goal of 2,500 hours of reading, by 45 hours! All 5 trees will be planted! Language Exchange Program
by Olivia E Olson 21 Aug '23

21 Aug '23

Hello all: Has anyone set up a successful language exchange/language buddy program at your library, where native English speakers can connect with speakers of another language so each can help the other improve? I've had a few patrons ask that we set up a program like this, so I'd love any advice/insight on logistics. social media comments
by Jason Novetsky (Roseville Public Library) 21 Aug '23

21 Aug '23

Hello. Has anyone taken steps to limit or disable comments from the public on their library social media accounts? Unless I'm missing something, Meta doesn't really allow users to disable comments completely on Facebook or Instagram. You can partially (Facebook) or completely (Insta) shut them down on individual posts, but only after they have been posted, not when they are scheduled in Meta Business Suite. This, in typical Meta fashion, seems extremely user un-friendly. We've been leaning toward shutting down comments down due to the rising tensions in social media, but this would make it nearly impossible to schedule posts in advance. Has anyone found a way around this or is there a trick within Meta platforms that I've missed? Thank you, Jason Novetsky Community Relations and Marketing Librarian Roseville Public Library 586-445-5407

Save the Date: Adult Services Presenter Showcase, Monday, December 4, 2023
by Katie Rothley 21 Aug '23

21 Aug '23

Dear Michlib-L and TLN (please excuse cross-posting), You are invited to attend TLN Adult Services Committee's Presenter Showcase (for planning future events for adults) and it is scheduled to take place on Monday, December 4 from 10 AM - 1 PM on Zoom. I am in the process of scheduling presenters that were recommended by you and our peers on the No Reservations Recommendations website <https://nrr.ninja/>, the TLN ASC programming Google Sheet, the survey I recently emailed out, or through Michlib-L in the past year or so. We will have a large group of performers and presenters who can run programs in-person or virtually, from within and outside of Michigan. Registration will be required through The Library Network website and will open about a month in advance of the event date so look for an email from me sometime in November. I wanted to be sure to share this far enough in advance: please save the date and ask for permission to be excused from desk duties to attend should programming apply to you. I'll be sending another reminder a month or so out from the date to invite you to officially register for the Zoom login. If you are part of another consortium that is not TLN, please consider sharing this on your respective listservs to help other librarians with programming inspo. If you are not able to attend, that's okay too as I will have a comprehensive list of all presenters that will be sharing info, including their contact and program info. I'll include it in the email inviting you to register. Thank you very much, -- Katie Rothley, MLIS Marketing & Public Relations Librarian Northville District Library 212 West Cady Street Northville, MI 48167 (248) 349-3020 <callto:(248)+349-3020> ext. 221 https://northvillelibrary.org My working day may not be your working day. Please do not feel obligated to reply to this email outside of your normal working hours.
