Library of Congress Webinar: Can Historical Newspapers Be an Antidote to the Environmental Crisis?

You can click here to register<https://loc.zoomgov.com/webinar/register/WN_LrkKVfUNTQi8Fakn4Dg-uA> or visit the event details page<https://www.loc.gov/item/event-410442/?loclr=evtser> for more information. Can Historical Newspapers Be an Antidote to the Environmental Crisis? Wednesday, September 20, 2023 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm EDT Our environmental crisis is tethered to an aesthetic and rhetorical crisis. So many institutions grant the public “free” access to archives, but what if—as an ordinary citizen—you can’t even find the door? This talk will consider barriers to information, how such obstacles may exacerbate the environmental crisis, and what newspapers can do that many resources cannot to help unlock knowledge for those who need it most. Kerri Arsenault is a literary critic, co-director of The Environmental Storytelling Studio at Brown University, contributing editor at Orion magazine, and author of "Mill Town: Reckoning with What Remains (2020)." Recently, she was a Democracy Fellow at Harvard’s Charles Warren Center for Studies in American History and a fellow at the Science History Institute. Her writing has been published in the Boston Globe, the Paris Review, the New York Review of Books, the Washington Post, and the New York Times. Last time - Frank Lloyd Dollhouse (Amber Alexander) Hello All, I recently started the WebJunction series regarding handling Climate Change at the library. I highly recommend checking in on this webinar series if you haven’t already. It’s free and you can watch the first two webinars recordings, including Sustainability 101 (https://www.webjunction.org/events/webjunction/sustainability-101.html)\ I am looking forprogramming ideas that can align with Sustainability and Climate Change topics, but I am having trouble finding out where to start. As the Adult Programmer at the library, I am comfortable in facilitating certain programs, but really wish to haveexperts talking about the subjects at hand. If any area libraries have hadpresentations/programs on topics that relate to this and could suggest presenters or themes, it would be very helpful. Our library is located just north of Kalamazoo on the west side of the state. We like to have presentations in-person, as we do not get a lot of attendees for Zoom/Live Stream programs (I do see the irony in having someone travel to talk about climate change, but getting the information out is important, so…) Thanks so much! It is large and would take a mini-van or truck to haul. If there is no interest, it will be taken to Goodwill or St. Vincents which is an already long drive for us. We have had it in our library for a few years and shared with our branches but we need to make room and would like it to go to a good home. There is some furniture which is included. It does need a table to sit on (current table is also available) and will need a couple of people to lift and carry. Again van or truck would work better. Sustainability & Climate Change Programming
by Anna Merritt 11 Sep '23

Hello All, I recently started the WebJunction series regarding handling Climate Change at the library. I highly recommend checking in on this webinar series if you haven't already. It's free and you can watch the first two webinars recordings, including Sustainability 101 (https://www.webjunction.org/events/webjunction/sustainability-101.html)\<https://www.webjunction.org/events/webjunction/sustainability-101.html)/> I am looking for programming ideas that can align with Sustainability and Climate Change topics, but I am having trouble finding out where to start. As the Adult Programmer at the library, I am comfortable in facilitating certain programs, but really wish to have experts talking about the subjects at hand. If any area libraries have had presentations/programs on topics that relate to this and could suggest presenters or themes, it would be very helpful. Our library is located just north of Kalamazoo on the west side of the state. We like to have presentations in-person, as we do not get a lot of attendees for Zoom/Live Stream programs (I do see the irony in having someone travel to talk about climate change, but getting the information out is important, so...) Thanks so much! Hi Amber, If this is a real FLW dollhouse design, the folks at the Cranbrook Center for Collections and Research might be interested. You can contact the curator, Kevin Adkisson, at kadkisson(a)cranbrook.edu. It's worth a try. Take care, Jody Helme-Day (she/her/hers) Why does this matter?
