Over the 195 years since the creation of the librarian position, the Library of Michigan has resided in several different locations. During Michigan's territorial and early statehood period, the library's collection was maintained within the confines of the capitol buildings in Detroit and Lansing. [Library of Michigan homes 195th] A collage of photos showcasing the many homes of the Library of Michigan. ________________________________ Paying Homage to Past State Library Staff As part of celebrating the Library of Michigan's 195th anniversary, the Library's Special Collections staff paid homage to all the past employees who served the state library by recreating a photograph of former State Librarian Mary Spencer and her staff in 1895. At the time the photo was taken, the state library was located in the west wing of the Michigan State Capitol, having moved there when the capitol building opened in 1879. The current staff at the Library of Michigan continues to build on the stewardship and service of the past generations of library staff that came before. Right: Library of Michigan's Special Collections staff recreating the 1895 photo in 2023 at the Law Library desk. ________________________________ Library of Michigan's Legacy at Michigan State Capitol Recently State Librarian Randy Riley and other Library of Michigan staff participated in a tour of the Michigan State Capitol's recently opened Heritage Hall<https://lnks.gd/l/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMDQsInVy…>. Facilitated by the Michigan State Capitol Commission and the Capitol's Tour, Education and Information Service, Heritage Hall is an underground visitors center and event space that is the new entryway for visitors entering the Michigan State Capitol. It includes expanded tour orientation rooms, history exhibits, an artifact conservation space, a large meeting space, and more to accommodate the thousands of visitors that come to the capitol building. A favorite part of the tour was seeing a portion of the exhibit space currently highlighting the Library of Michigan's history within the capitol. The state library collections spent time in all 3 of Michigan's capitol buildings, starting in the territorial courthouse in Detroit and later in both the 2nd and 3rd capitol buildings in Lansing. The need for expanded collections and staff space would eventually lead to the bulk of the state library moving to the main floor of the new (Elliott-Larsen) State Office Building at the corner of South Walnut and Kalamazoo Streets. The Law Library staff and collections remained at the Capitol until 1969, when they moved into the G. Mennen Williams state office building on Ottawa Street. The display also highlighted the tenure of former State Librarian Harriet Tenney, the first female Michigan State Librarian as well as Michigan's first female state officer and state department head. The Library of Michigan will reopen on Tuesday, June 20, 2023. The Juneteenth holiday is derived from when Union Army General Gordon Granger landed at the Texas port city of Galveston in 1865 as the Civil War ended. One of General Grangers first actions was to read General Order #3 on June 19, 1865, which stated that all slaves are free and that former masters and slaves have absolute equality of personal and property rights. The Emancipation Proclamation, signed on Jan. 1, 1863, legally freed all slaves in the U.S., but slavery was not yet fully abolished during the period leading up to the Civil War's end. The day the announcement was made became known as Juneteenth. First formally observed in Texas in 1866, Juneteenth became a holiday that slowly spread throughout the country as Black Americans moved north during the Great Migration. In Michigan, early celebrations of emancipation were observed Aug. 1 when Frederick Douglass spoke in Battle Creek after the Civil War. For many years, the day remained for celebrating emancipation in Michigan. Juneteenth celebrations began decades ago in Michigan, but it wasn't officially celebrated in Detroit until the 1990s. [Jessica Pressley]Jessica Pressley Outreach Lead Community Action House Holland Jessica Pressley, BS in Interdisciplinary Health Services, certified CISM crisis debriefer through Michigan Crisis Response Association. She is the current Street Outreach Team Lead with Community Action House. Community Action House is a local nonprofit working to build a community where nobody goes without, and every neighbor has what they need for a healthy, productive, and fulfilling life. The Outreach team works with neighbors experiencing homelessness through on-the-street outreach, case management, and resource navigation, with the goal of finding safe, stable housing. She provides overall program management and development to the team of case managers and program specialists working alongside our guests. For this partnership with the Herrick District Library, she works closely with library leaders to cultivate a welcoming space for all library patrons, guide program effectiveness with the community action house case managers to navigate the needs of guests and with the HDL leadership, to grow a community-wide understanding and begin breaking down barriers and stigmas for those experiencing homelessness. She is passionate about the understanding of Trauma, its effect on individuals and their communities and how to build resilience to process through crisis and grief. She is also contracted to work with corporations in providing onsite Crisis intervention and Debriefing to teams and individuals who experience a traumatic or critical event. She provides resilience and trauma training to AFC home supervisors and managers to support teams providing care to individuals with developmental Disabilities and Mental Illness. Hey all, Just wanted to share a Canva file in which I created a summer reading bookmark, if anyone wants to use it. It's pretty simple but you can make a copy to your own canva account to edit the info and logo. Starting a Video Game Collection // Questions for other Libraries

Hi Michlib! Recently our library has started looking into offering a video game collection for our patrons. We offer DVDs for movies and music as well as Audio Books. We wanted to ask for some info regarding other library's practices regarding vendors and circulation practices; * Currently we use Midwest for our DVDs, however they don't offer video games. We used to use Crimsoninc for our cd-roms and are looking at them, but other recommendations would be great! * We use locking cases for our DVDs and would most likely continue for consistency with our circulation process. Have any of your collections experienced issues with this? * Do you circulate consoles? If so, do you offer consoles with purchased digital copies of games or do patrons check out physical copies with them? * Are computer games a popular circulation option still? If so, do you offer them digitally in the library or through physical copies? Thank you in advance for any assistance or information anyone can provide! Early on the library was housed in the territorial capitol of Detroit before moving to Lansing and its current home at the Michigan Library and Historical Center. The Library of Michigan houses an expansive special collection in addition to the Martha Griffith Rare Book Room.
