MeL Minute: Using MeL to Research Remote and Hybrid Working Conditions
by Laura Warren-Gross 21 Sep '23

21 Sep '23

[A white letter on a blue green and red background Description automatically generated]Though the pandemic demonstrated just how many jobs could be completed successfully from home for many who had never done so before, it has also caused corporations and nonprofit organizations alike to consider offering remote and hybrid work opportunities as an additional employee recruiting and retention tool. Working from home can be attractive to employees and employers and creating a work environment and culture that is conducive to remote work can also be mutually beneficial. The Michigan eLibrary<https://mel.org/welcome> (MeL) includes articles and eBooks that can be used to begin answering some common questions people have about working remotely. Does remote work foster innovation? In an article titled "Remote Work Can Be Better for Innovation Than In-Person Meetings<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…>" in Scientific American Mind, a publication from Academic Search Complete<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…>, Gleb Tsipursky suggests seven steps for asynchronous virtual brainstorming that can lead to generating more original ideas than in-person brainstorming sessions. These steps allow introverts and lower-status team members to have an equal voice, both of whom are often overlooked during in-person meetings. Can workplaces create a solid culture with remote workers? Also included in Academic Search Complete<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…>, Lucas Mearian, a reporter for Computerworld (Online Only), interviewed Jessica Kriegel about what business leaders need to do to create a workplace culture in "Q&A: How to Create Workplace Culture in a Time of Remote Work<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…>." Kriegel shares that workplace culture is not about perks but is more focused on “. . . the feelings we share that shape our beliefs.” She encourages rewarding risk-taking and meeting intentionally rather than punitive systems that heavily monitor employees. What policies need to be in place for successful remote work? In terms of both human resources and technology, having clear policies can make all the difference for a smooth-running organization. "Managing Remote Work: 7 Tips for Creating Effective Employer Policies<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…>" in Employee Benefit Plan Review, a publication in Associates Programs Source<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…>, provides excellent ideas to help organizations shore up policies for remote workers. How can I learn more about successful remote work? The eBook Public Library Collection<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…> includes several eBooks that can get any organization started on the path to remote work, including: The Long-Distance Teammate: Staying Engaged and Connected While Working Anywhere<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…> by Kevin Eikenberry and Wayne Turmel The Long-Distance Leader: Rules for Remarkable Remote Leadership<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…> by Kevin Eikenberry and Wayne Turmel Working Virtually: Transforming the Mobile Workplace<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…> by Trina Hoefling The Remote Facilitator’s Pocket Guide<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…> by Kirsten Clacey and Jay-Allen Morris Now that remote and hybrid work have become a normal part of workplace culture, it’s a great time to use the MeL eResources<https://mel.org/az.php> to learn more about what is possible. If you have any MeL eResources questions or issues, contact melerhelp(a)mcls.org<mailto:melerhelp@mcls.org> for help. Brought to you by Laura Warren-Gross from the MeL Team. New Resource Hub to Benefit Michigan Communities via $1M in Federal Grant Awarded to LEO and MML
by Reish, Karren (MDE) 20 Sep '23

20 Sep '23

FYI on a new place to check on current and upcoming grants available to local governments through the MI Department of Labor & Economic Opportunity and the Michigan Municipal League. I would suggest keeping an eye on this project as one of the grants LEO managed this spring allowed construction funding for libraries. Future grant opportunities through them may be fruitful. Karren Reish Library Grants Coordinator Library of Michigan 517-241-0021 / www.mi.gov/lsta<http://www.mi.gov/lsta> From: Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity <LEO(a)govsubscriptions.michigan.gov<mailto:LEO@govsubscriptions.michigan.gov>> Sent: Wednesday, September 20, 2023 9:02 AM Subject: PRESS RELEASE: New Resource Hub to Benefit Michigan Communities via $1M in Federal Grant Awarded to LEO and MML [LEO Banner] --- PRESS RELEASE --- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Wednesday, September 20, 2023 CONTACT: Morgan Schwanky Michigan Municipal League mschwanky(a)mml.org<mailto:mschwanky@mml.org>, 734-669-6320 New Resource Hub to Benefit Michigan Communities via $1M in Federal Grant Awarded to LEO and MML LEO partners with the Michigan Municipal League to create Michigan Local Capacity Enhancement Program to assist local communities with funding and grant opportunities Lansing, Mich.-Today, the Michigan Department of Labor & Economic Opportunity (LEO) and the Michigan Municipal League (MML), announced they have partnered to create the Michigan Local Capacity Enhancement Program through a $1 million grant under the federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). Under the new program, the League will provide local communities with a robust online resource hub (MIFundingHub.org) and technical assistance to support them in understanding, seeking and successfully deploying new grant funds for economic growth, infrastructure and other community projects. "LEO is excited to partner with the League on this local capacity program and to develop the much-needed MI Funding Hub," said LEO Director Susan Corbin. "Michigan Communities of all sizes will have the opportunity to gain knowledge on how to successfully deploy new grant opportunities that will directly impact on their community's and help their residents thrive." With billions in available funding for local units of government through programs like ARPA, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the Inflation Reduction Act there is a significant need for communities to track funding opportunities as they become available. For many communities across Michigan, especially those small and medium-sized, navigating this process and developing projects and programs that meet their current and future needs exceeds their capacity. "Here in Saginaw, we've relied on the League to help us decide how to invest our ARPA funding," said Brenda F. Moore, Saginaw Mayor. "This partnership between with the League and the state will ensure that we can continue to depend on this assistance moving forward. It's great news for Michigan's communities and cities like Saginaw." In 2020, the League launched two programs - "ServeMICity" and "MI Water Navigator" - to help communities plan and secure new recovery and infrastructure funding for projects that address long-standing community needs. Through those technical assistance and training programs they've helped hundreds of communities leverage over $200 million in new state and federal funding. "This new funding from LEO will allow the League to build on our already successful technical assistance programs that are helping communities leverage new federal funding for high impact local programs," Dan Gilmartin, CEO and executive director of the League. "This work will provide local governments with the critical information and tools they need to capitalize on this once in a generation opportunity." Gilmartin explained there are billions of dollars in new federal funding available and Michigan has an opportunity to maximize access to these resources by providing support to communities in understanding, seeking and successfully deploying new grant funds for economic growth, infrastructure and other community projects. With additional funding from LEO the League will significantly scale up its technical assistance program for communities including: * Creating a robust online resource hub that provides information on new grants and funding opportunities as well as resources and tools for successfully managing projects. * Providing technical assistance for local governments to assist them in understanding funding opportunities, evaluating local project options and potential grant matches, and directing them to applicable funding sources. * Offering a variety of training and outreach efforts including funding newsletters, grant readiness training, webinars and more. The League will act as the project lead for this initiative and oversee the project timeline, budget, strategic partnership management and continuous improvement activities. Technical assistance for communities is available now, and the online funding and resource hub is projected to be completed in January 2024. Questions About Providing Digital Access for Public School Students
by Melissa Alan 20 Sep '23

20 Sep '23

Greetings! Looking for tips and anecdotal advice from public libraries who have worked with public schools to provide access to digital resources for students via Libby, Hoopla, Kanopy, etc. Our public library piloted a program in 2016 that gave middle school students digital only library cards to access Overdrive. I was not here for this program but am being asked about bringing it back with students having access to Libby. We'd love to provide these resources - along with educational outreach - but want to work through potential issues: * We would ask the school to communicate clearly with parents/guardians. This would include providing an opt out option. Wondering if anyone has handouts or communications for a program such as this? These digital collections are not segmented like our physical collections - how to communicate this to parents/guardians? * If several students are opted out, did this greatly impact the goals of the program? * Logistics on handling digital only cards with our other digital resources such as Kanopy and Hoopla: currently these cards would provide access to all our digital resources. Has anyone found a way to handle this? * Anything else? Thanks for your time and input! Melissa Matuscak Alan (she/hers) Circulation Department Head Peter White Public Library 217 N.
