by Wambaugh, Stephanie (LEO) 15 Oct '26

15 Oct '26

Good morning, Data can help us make informed decisions about where to spend our time and energy. That's why I want to offer statistics to our library partners about the number of Braille and Talking Book Library <https://www.michigan.gov/leo/bureaus-agencies/bureau-of-services-for-blind-…> users in your service areas. Upon request, I can work with you to target specific cities so you can see how many people in your serving area are already users of BTBL. This can help you determine potential programming needs, staff training needs, or just give us a baseline for increasing BTBL service to potential patrons in your areas. Reply to me directly with your stat request at : WambaughS(a)michigan.gov<mailto:WambaughS@michigan.gov> Offering BTBL as a supplement to the audiobooks you already provide can open up hundreds of thousands of additional reading opportunities for your patrons in accessible formats. Our large collection of audio and braille books can be mailed on cartridge and played using our free digital talking book player, or patrons can download the free BARD Mobile app to access books directly on their personal devices. Perks of BTBL service? * Free home delivery of materials * No hold lists for materials * No overdue fees Are you looking for a refresher on what the Braille and Talking Book Library<https://www.michigan.gov/leo/bureaus-agencies/bureau-of-services-for-blind-…> offers? I'm always happy to talk one-on-one or present to your staff about this service. Remember - patrons do NOT need to be legally blind to use our service, and library staff CAN certify our applications. Thank you for making a difference in your communities by spreading the word about BTBL! #ThatAllMayRead Stephanie Wambaugh, Librarian 12 Team Lead and Outreach Services Michigan Braille and Talking Book Library (BTBL) Bureau of Services for Blind Persons P.O. It’s Cybersecurity Awareness Month: The Cyber Library Case
by Quick, Shauna (MDE) 14 Oct '26

14 Oct '26

Hello! The next Cybersecurity Awareness Month mini-game is ready! Week 1: https://quokka-tfvq2m.my.canva.site/ Week 2: https://quokka-tfvq2m.my.canva.site/library-cybersecurity-hidden-puzzle-wee… October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month; an annual nationwide initiative focused on promoting safer online practices and increasing awareness of digital threats. For libraries, cybersecurity is especially important: staff handle sensitive patron information, rely on networked systems every day, and play a key role in modeling safe digital behavior for the community. Strengthening cybersecurity habits helps protect both library operations and the communities we serve. I’m excited to share a series of short, interactive mini‑games created in Canva using Canva’s AI tools, with support from use of Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini, and Anthropic Claude. Each week in October, I’ll send a new email with a direct link to that week’s game. Feel free to share the link with staff internally. Please note: the games will only be available through November 30. I hope these games add a little fun to your October while giving your cybersecurity skills a quick boost. Representatives from Michigan's 529 college savings plans, the Michigan Education Trust (MET) and the Michigan Education Savings Program (MESP), will offer one-on-one help. “A small investment of $25 and the bonus can open the door for Michigan families to start saving for college,” said Megan Patino, executive director of MET. “The sooner you begin saving, the more impact those dollars will have for your child’s education and future.” The information session<https://links-2.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.michigan.gov%2Fsetwithm…>, hosted by the Treasury's Section 529 college savings team, will run from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the museum, 5093 E. Remus Road, Mount Pleasant. No appointment is necessary, and families can drop in at any time, though a short presentation will be given at 11 a.m. The first 70 attendees to check in will receive free admission to the museum. MET, the state's prepaid tuition program, will give a $100 bonus per beneficiary for an initial contribution of $25 to $499, or $200 for an initial contribution of $500 or more. The contribution must be made in a single payment, and families must attend an in-person fall 2026 enrollment session<https://links-2.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.michigan.gov%2Fsetwithm…> to qualify. MET allows families to purchase college tuition at today's rates, and MESP is an investment-based plan with flexible options. Representatives will be available to explain each plan's features and offer general tips for parents, grandparents, and others who want to save for college. "MET plans support a wide range of paths your student may take," Patino said. "If something changes along the way, you don't lose what you've saved. The benefits can be transferred to another family member." Over its 38-year history, MET has helped more than 120,000 students save for future education expenses. Families can learn more about MET, including bonus eligibility requirements, at SETwithMET.com<https://links-2.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fsetwithmet.com%2F/1/010101a…>. ### About MET<https://links-2.govdelivery.com/CL0/http:%2F%2Fwww.setwithmet.com%2F/1/0101…> MET is Michigan’s Section 529 prepaid tuition savings program that allows the purchase of future tuition at today’s rates. The total contract price may be eligible for a state tax deduction and earnings are tax-exempt if used for qualified higher education expenses. MET funds can also be used to pay out-of-state, Michigan private college and trade school tuition. Credits can also be transferred to other eligible family members. About MESP<https://links-2.govdelivery.com/CL0/http:%2F%2Fwww.misaves.com%2F/1/010101a…> MESP is Michigan’s direct-sold Section 529 investment college savings plan that offers families various investment options. Qualified higher education expenses include tuition, fees, room, board, books, equipment and supplies required for enrollment. Limitations apply.
