October Clarke Historical Library Speaker Series Events
by Marsh, Carrie 16 Oct '26

16 Oct '26

The Clarke Historical Library has two speaker events in October. These two in-person events are in the Opperman Auditorium at the Park Library. Tuesday, Oct. 20, 7 p.m. Dr. Anne Ruggles Gere, University of Michigan: How Indigenous Women Teachers Helped Boarding School Students Resist Assimilation Drawing on her recent book, Agents of Survivance: Indigenous Women Teachers in the Boarding School Era, and her research on the Mount Pleasant Indian Industrial Boarding School, Dr. Gere adds a new dimension to received accounts of boarding schools by focusing on the contributions of Indigenous women teachers. While acknowledging the many challenges they faced, she identifies specific practices and principles Indigenous women teachers used to support survivance among their students. Tuesday, Oct. 27, 7 p.m. John and Audrey Cumming Endowed Lecture: Dr. Catherine Cangany, Jewish Historical Society of Michigan: Ruthless Ingenuity: Detroit's Purple Gang Jewish mobsters ran Detroit during Prohibition (1920-1933). Known for shocking violence and vicious turf wars, the untouchable Purples were also emblematic of the Detroit neighborhood they called home: scrappy, resourceful, innovative, and proudly Jewish. And yet, the Purples remained sharply at odds with local Jewish communities, which endured shame and retaliatory antisemitism for the Purples' actions in Detroit and mid-Michigan. by Beth Barker 16 Oct '26

16 Oct '26

Executive Director - Community Library Sedona (AZ) The Board of Directors of Community Library Sedona<https://communitylibrarysedona.org/> (AZ) seeks a thoughtful, collaborative, and visionary Executive Director to guide this independent nonprofit public library through its next chapter of growth, innovation, and community connection. Serving Sedona and the Verde Valley, the library operates two locations, including a 26,000-square-foot main library, with 15.35 FTE staff and an FY27 operating budget of approximately $2.2 million. Supported by public funding and private philanthropy, the recently rebranded library embraces an imaginative Explorer culture, offering innovative programs such as community sound baths and wellness experiences, and hosting signature events like its inaugural Get Loud celebration, which welcomed more than 1,000 residents. Building on this momentum, the library is undertaking a three-phase, $7.2 million capital campaign to revitalize its spaces and expand its role as a regional gathering place, with more than $2.15 million raised toward its $2.3 million Phase One goal. The next Executive Director will advance the campaign, strengthen donor relationships and financial sustainability, activate revitalized spaces, and establish a clear vision for the library's future. Equally important will be providing steady, attentive leadership that values staff expertise, builds trust, supports a healthy organizational culture, and brings the library's ambitious vision to life. Sedona and the Verde Valley, nestled among the spectacular red-rock formations of north-central Arizona, offer an extraordinary combination of natural beauty, artistic expression, outdoor adventure, and engaged community life. Sedona's intimate small-town atmosphere is enriched by a nationally recognized arts and wellness culture, with destinations such as the Sedona Arts Center, Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village, and the Mary D. Fisher Theatre, along with the celebrated Sedona International Film Festival and Sedona Plein Air Festival. The surrounding landscape invites year-round exploration, from hiking Cathedral Rock and Bell Rock to discover Oak Creek Canyon, Red Rock State Park, and hundreds of miles of trails winding through Coconino National Forest. Beyond Sedona, the Verde Valley encompasses distinctive communities including Cottonwood, Clarkdale, Jerome, Camp Verde, and the Village of Oak Creek, each contributing to its own history, arts, recreation, and community traditions. Flagstaff, with its university community and mountain recreation, is approximately 30 miles north, while the Phoenix metropolitan area, roughly two hours south, offers major-city amenities and air travel connections. Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be a strategic, relationship-centered leader who brings strong financial acumen, fundraising expertise, and a commitment to organizational excellence. The Executive Director will work closely with the Board of Directors to advance the library's strategic vision, strengthen financial sustainability, and lead philanthropic efforts, including major donor cultivation and capital campaign initiatives. As the library's chief ambassador, the Director will build meaningful partnerships throughout the Verde Valley, advocate for the library's mission, and inspire community support. Internally, the Director will foster a collaborative, supportive workplace culture, empower staff leadership, and establish clear priorities and measurable goals. Through thoughtful leadership, innovation, and sound organizational stewardship, the Executive Director will guide Community Library Sedona into its next chapter of growth and community impact. For a full list of responsibilities, see the links in the job posting on the BMA website<https://bradburymiller.com/open-positions/> (https://bradburymiller.com/open-positions/) Qualifications: A master's degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited institution, five or more years of senior executive leadership experience in a public library or library-support organization, superior relationship-building and community engagement skills, and strong financial management and forecasting experience are required. Experience leading nonprofit or mission-driven organizations, managing organizational growth or capital projects, conducting capital campaigns or major gift fundraising, and working with governing boards is desired. Compensation: The hiring salary range is $120,000 - $140,000 (with placement negotiable depending on experience and qualifications) and an excellent fringe benefits package. Michigan Poetry Out Loud opportunities for high school students
by Katie Wittenauer 15 Oct '26

15 Oct '26

Hello from Michigan Humanities! Earlier this fall, we opened registration for our state’s Poetry Out Loud program<https://www.michiganhumanities.org/poetry-out-loud/>. Poetry Out Loud is a national arts education program that lifts poetry off the page by offering free educational materials and a recitation competition for high school students across the country. If your library is interested in learning more about program partnership, please let me know and I can send you the Zoom details for our upcoming program kick-off meeting at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20. We often hear from libraries who serve high school students or collaborate with local schools about their interest in the program. I’d love to share more details with you one-on-one or via next week’s meeting. The 2026–27 Poetry Out Loud season marks the 22nd year of this statewide, free program. Last year, more than 3,000 students and 75 teachers participated across Michigan. All types of high schools are welcome to participate, including public, private, parochial, independent, charter and homeschool. Non-school organizations, such as after school clubs, libraries, or nonprofit organizations, may partner as well. Online registration is open until December 4, 2026. I’ve attached a press release so that you can learn more about the program and our statewide partnership with the Michigan Arts and Culture Council that makes Michigan Poetry Out Loud possible. I look forward to talking with you soon, Katie Katie Wittenauer (she/her) Director of Programs | kwittenauer(a)mihumanities.org<mailto:kwittenauer@mihumanities.org> | LinkedIn<https://www.linkedin.com/in/katiewittenauer/> Connecting, Sharing, Growing [A blue and white badge with gold ribbon Description automatically generated] Michigan Humanities PO Box 91 Marshall, MI 49068 517-372-7770, ext. 294 Website<http://michiganhumanities.org/> | Facebook<https://www.facebook.com/MichiganHumanities> | Instagram<https://www.instagram.com/mihumanities/?hl=en> Mission: Bringing people together through stories, histories, cultures, and conversations.

15 Oct '26

Building Community-Based Summers: Tri-State In-Person Workshops * Thursday, November 5, 2026 - from 9:30 am - 4:30 pm at the Main Library, Toledo-Lucas County Public Library, 325 N. Michigan St, Toledo, Ohio. Free Parking is available. Registration: https://forms.gle/H1v37vAk1wzPT5W59 * Thursday, November 19, 2026 - from 9:30 am - 4:30 pm at the Meijer Branch, Jackson District Library, 2699 Airport Rd., Jackson, MI 49202. Free parking is available. Registration: https://forms.gle/wUsExGchA63cWhxo6 Both workshops will cover the same BCBS content; register for the date and location of your choice. Registration is free. Description: Over the last few years public libraries in Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio have participated in cohorts of the Building Community-Based Summers (BCBS) national IMLS project. Through learning sessions and activities, BCBS helps libraries develop new thinking and strategies about summer services in four key areas: Rethinking Internal Systems, Fostering a Culture of Learning, Centering Community, and Reflecting Continuously about summer services and their impact. These BCBS Workshops are being offered to any IN, MI, and OH library workers who are interested in evaluating and reassessing their summer services. Attendees will participate in a variety of activities to help them view their summer services through fresh eyes at a critical time of the year as they plan for next summer. The facilitators will share a brief history and background about BCBS for those unfamiliar with the project, and details for those who wish to be trained more deeply regarding the BCBS learning topics and strategies. The workshops will also include much time for discussion and sharing, to learn what libraries are planning to better reach all their communities and to provide ideas and strategies to address challenges. Who should register? To support your ability to implement BCBS strategies in your community, we highly encourage 2 or more staff members from your library or system to register and attend the workshop. Staff working in any department, especially those with a focus on public programming, are welcome to attend. Facilitators: Bringing extensive experience with BCBS, facilitators Cathy Lancaster (Library of Michigan), Katy Hite (State Library of Ohio), Janet Ingraham Dwyer (State Library of Ohio), and Beth Yates (Indiana State Library), will offer key insights. They will discuss how applying BCBS framework processes enables libraries to design more adaptive summer services and programs tailored to local needs and community perspectives. Learning Objectives - Participants will be able to: * Explain briefly the history of the Building Community- Based Summers (BCBS) project and its four key principles * Identify their library organization’s “why” of summer services * Name examples of strategies that other libraries have implemented to build greater community involvement into their summer services * Identify one or two action steps your library could take to help build more community voice into your summer services Feel free to reach out to me directly with any questions.
