Keynote speaker - Misinformation
by Andrea Ingmire 07 Nov '23

07 Nov '23

Greeting Michigan Libraries, I'm wondering if any of you have hosted programming around the top of misinformation. Specifically I'm looking for a keynote speaker who can get to the UP in Mid-Feb - Early March. I've already hounded the UofM folks behind the Public Librarianship in Contentious Times workshop...and am looking for OTHER speaker options. We do have a travel and stipend budget for this program, we just need to find someone willing to join us in person. We are NOT interested in virtual options. If you have suggestions, I'd love to hear them! Andrea [cid:image001.png@01DA117D.83022130] Andrea Ingmire Library Director 217 N. Register Now - Upcoming Library of Michigan Library Law Webinars
by Wartella, Becky (MDE) 07 Nov '23

07 Nov '23

Greetings, November 16, 2023, 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM: The Open Meetings Act (OMA) Refresher Who can speak during a public meeting? Who sets the agenda? Is a committee under the OMA? The Open Meetings Act is an integral part of a public library's governance, but it is also confusing and full of nuance. This session will provide a refresher on the OMA , and also discuss some amendments that are (hopefully) on the way! For more information or to register, visit the Event Page<https://libraryofmichigan.app.neoncrm.com/np/clients/libraryofmichigan/even…> (https://libraryofmichigan.app.neoncrm.com/np/clients/libraryofmichigan/even…) December 1, 2023, 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM: Library Fundraising Libraries are always looking for revenue, and many are considering taking fundraising into their own hands. Should you? What are the legal considerations of municipal fundraising? Is Crowdfunding in your future? This session will discuss options libraries have for fundraising and how Friends' groups, Foundations and Libraries differ in their options and restrictions. For more information or to register, visit the Event Page<https://libraryofmichigan.app.neoncrm.com/np/clients/libraryofmichigan/even…> (https://libraryofmichigan.app.neoncrm.com/np/clients/libraryofmichigan/even…) Thank you, Becky Wartella Department of Education Library of Michigan 702 W. The Cat in the Hat performs HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS at YOUR Library this Holiday!
by romeoisojuliet＠aol.com 06 Nov '23

06 Nov '23

Dear Michigan Library Branch, My name is Paul Riopelle. I'm a professional actor who does live Christmas appearances as The Cat in the Hat, performing HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS, as well as two other holiday favorites, FROSTY THE SNOWMAN, and T'WAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS. I was writing to inquire if your branch might have interest in bringing our program in for your patrons and their families this holiday season. This is a fully-memorized and acted-out version of Dr. Seuss' beloved classic, HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS, with lots of audience participation. I teach the audience the "Who Song" to sing near the end of the tale, and even choose a volunteer to play Cindy Lou Who, complete with Who-antennas! In addition to the main tale, the program also includes performances of the Children's favorites FROSTY THE SNOWMAN and 'TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS. The visit opens with leading the children in a Christmas sing-a-long, then moves to the three stories, and ends with a final Christmas carol. Candy canes can also be passed out to the children, if desired. The program lasts about 30 minutes, followed by photo-ops with each child and family. Attached you will find a press photo of the program, and you may find a short clip of me performing the first few stanzas of the show at this link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1N5ia4Nsfakr2dor0Wp2tZwrl9nKTMiix/view?usp=… Upon reviewing the attached materials, I hope you will have interest in learning more. To my knowledge, there's no other performer out there bringing this Holiday Classic to life in the way I do, so I'd LOVE to bring it to your library branch this Christmas season. Performances are very reasonably priced, with even lower rates available for multiple presentations on a single day. Please feel free to contact me at any time at this email address, or at my cell number, 312-339-9406. I look forward to discussing the possibilities! With warm regards, Paul Riopelle

Book Offers - Library of MI
by Bacon, Betsy (MDE) 06 Nov '23

06 Nov '23

Hello - the Library of Michigan has free materials we are offering to the library community. To take advantage of this opportunity, see the information below and the attached spreadsheet. Feel free to forward this message to other library groups or listservs within Michigan. Content and condition The titles listed are extra copies of fiction and non-fiction (hard and soft cover) books submitted to the Michigan Notable Books program over the last year and either contain Michigan content and/or were written by a Michigan author. Also available are items weeded from our collections, and donated materials we cannot use. Most of the non-MNB items are old library books and come with library markings/stickers, but are otherwise in the condition noted on the spreadsheet. If you'd like to only consider the newer books, you can either sort by condition or publication year. How to request Please submit requests by email to baconb1(a)michigan.gov<mailto:baconb1@michigan.gov> . If you are local or passing through, you are welcome to schedule a time to select and claim materials on-site from 9am-5pm, Mon.-Fri. Email baconb1(a)michigan.gov<mailto:baconb1@michigan.gov> if you want to schedule a visit. Email requests are handled on a first-come basis by date and time. Some, or all requested materials may no longer be available at the point we receive your email. It may take a couple weeks to process the requests, depending on staff time and availability of RIDES totes. I will send you an email when I am able to ship the materials to you. Shipping We prefer to ship items via RIDES. If you are not in the RIDES system, we can ship via UPS and we will cover the cost of shipment. Email requests must include the title as noted on the spreadsheet, how many copies you want (if applicable), RIDES code or a delivery address (street address only, no P.O. box), contact name, phone number and email address.
