Library Director - Sanibel Public Library (FL) The Sanibel Public Library<https://sanlib.org/> (FL) Board of Commissioners seeks a motivated, outgoing, and capable library leader to become its next Library Director. Sanibel Public Library is a multiple Library Journal star-awarded library serving a population of 6,000 year-round residents and populations exceeding 20,000 during winter months. The Library Director will oversee a $2.4 million budget at a standalone location employing 16.5 full-time equivalent employees and work under the direction of a publicly elected seven-member Board of Commissioners. This visible leader will fully embrace public library philosophies and principles, while effectively translating pertinent recommendations to the board with sound decision-making skills when facing a wide range of circumstances. With excellent interpersonal skills and a keen ability to collaborate with multiple stakeholders to develop partnerships in the community, the ideal candidate will positively lead the organization to implement community-specific and innovative library services to a unique service area. Sanibel Island is on the Southwest gulf coast of Florida. With 12 miles of sandy beaches and award-winning areas, the island's east-west orientation creates a seashell collectors paradise. As a result of its status to remain a barrier island sanctuary, the community embraces the diversity of the population co-existing with the area's varied wildlife and natural habitats. While the island still recovers from damage inflicted by Hurricane Ian in 2022, restaurants, lodging, and recreational opportunities continue to thrive and entertain both permanent residents and visitors. Sanibel is a short bridge drive away from Fort Myers, Florida which offers even more cultural and entertainment opportunities. Responsibilities: The Library Director develops and presents a draft financial budget to the board on an annual basis for forecasting, approval and appropriation; identifies, applies for, and appropriately handles any grant funding; recruits, selects, hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates library staff; administratively assists the board with long-range planning and policy development and implementation; prepares state annual report; informs and advises the board on relevant updates and trends in the library field; ensures the maintenance and safety of facilities and grounds; oversees the design and implementation of services and programs for users of all ages; ensures staff are trained to enhance the patrons' experience by providing access to collections, programs, and services that uplift the overall reputation of the library; prioritizes outreach, serving as the public face of the library, responsible for disseminating public information, acting as liaison with community groups, and promoting the library as a community resource. Qualifications: An ALA-accredited master's degree in library science plus three or more years of progressively responsible experience in a public library is required. Experience providing excellent customer service, supervising a team, reporting directly to a governing board, and managing a budget are desired skills. Compensation: The hiring salary range is $130,000 - $140,000 (with placement negotiable dependent on experience and qualifications) and an excellent fringe benefits package. Starting a Volunteer Program
by DHL Outreach 28 Jun '24

28 Jun '24

Hi folks, I'm tasked with (re)starting a volunteer program at my library. I've found Carla Campbell Lehn's *From Library Volunteer to Library Advocate* useful in thinking about the purpose of a volunteer program, but am seeking feedback from other libraries (especially Class 2 and 3 libraries) on the following topics: - What kinds of tasks do you give volunteers? - How do you delineate supplementing vs supplanting staff responsibilities? - Do you allow volunteers to come into contact with patron information? If you're willing to send me any feedback or advice to my staff email ( dhloutreach(a)gmail.com) I'd greatly appreciate it! Thanks, Molly McBride -- Programs and Outreach Coordinator Dorothy Hull Library - Windsor Township 405 W. Jefferson St. Dimondale, MI 48821 517-646-0633 https://windsor-township.ploud.net/

Looking for Suggestions/Recommendations
by Sara Horn 27 Jun '24

27 Jun '24

Hello The Charlotte Community Library, located in Charlotte, MI is thinking of moving our compact shelving unit, currently located in our staff area, to another place in our building. I have attached a picture of what this unit looks like for reference. The middle shelf is movable to create a walkway down either side. High capacity shelfs is another term that may be used to describe them. I have reached out to Library Design to get a quote/proposal from them about this type of move including uninstalling and reinstalling. I would appreciate any suggestions or recommendations of different companies that any you may have used for this type of move. Thank you! State of Michigan Budget
by Debbie Mikula 27 Jun '24

27 Jun '24

Never wanting to keep MLA members in the dark, we are finally able to share the state of Michigan budget with you (links below for the House Fiscal Agency Conference Reports for the General Omnibus Budget and the School Aid Fund). With little to no advance public review of the budget, in the early morning hours today, the FY25 State of Michigan budget (beginning October 1) has finally passed through the conference committee, the Senate and the House. The budget now awaits the Governor’s signature before the July 1st deadline. (Just as a reminder, she also has line item veto power, so nothing is in stone until she signs.) While we haven’t had time to digest the entire budget, we have highlighted some of the items that we have been watching including (DRUMROLL PLEASE) a $1,000,000 increase to State Aid bringing it to $16,567,700. And while we didn’t get everything we asked for in the budget…your voices were heard and communications with your state legislators made a difference! Advocacy is a full year commitment – it never ends, so keep up the good work. We are #StrongerTogether. MLA will share more details soon on other MLA priorities. Thank you MLA Members! ********************* GENERAL OMNIBUS BUDGET<https://www.legislature.mi.gov/documents/2023-2024/billanalysis/House/pdf/2…> Dept of Education State Aid to Libraries - $1,000,000 increase (page 21) Poet Laureate - $100,000 (on-going support rather than one time funding) (page 22) Library of Michigan allocation of $450,000 for 3 FTE staff members for operation support was not adopted in the final budget (Page 23) Dept. of Lifelong Education, Advancement and Potential (MILEAP) State Archives will be moving from the Dept. of Natural Resources to the new MILEAP department - $1.915M with 14.5 FTE Dept. of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) Senate One-Time Grant Programs (Page 118) No funds were included for Community Center grants ($20M proposed by Senate) No funds were included for Community Revitalization and Municipal Support grants ($15.5M proposed by Senate) Enhancement Grants (Page 118) (There may be other libraries that will benefit from the $335,987,000 dollars allocated to these enhancement grants, but perhaps are listed under their city, township or county) Community Enhancement Grants – Senate Bill 747, (S-1) CR-1, Sec. 1050a - Hazel Park Library infrastructure grant $200,000 (Page 130) Community Enhancement Grants – Senate Bill 747, (S-1) CR-1, Sec. 1050d - Krause Memorial Library Expansion $1,000,000 (Page 131) Dept. of Natural Resources America 250 Commission Grants (one time only) $5,000,000 (Page 167) Plan, develop, encourage, and coordinate the commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the United States. MeL Minute: Check Items Off an Ultimate Bucket List with Ideas from MeL
by Laura Warren-Gross 27 Jun '24

[A white letter on a blue green and red background Description automatically generated]I recently watched this fun promotion for summer reading<https://www.instagram.com/reel/C71xKgWuRLp/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link> from the Milwaukee Public Library and it made me think about summer bucket lists. What can I do locally that is free or relatively low-cost? When my kids were young, we would create a calendar of fun activities to fill our time—mostly summer camps, free local events, and a few day trips. Though most of us won’t be giving a monkey a shower this summer, we can build a summer bucket list with ideas from the Michigan eLibrary<https://mel.org/welcome> (MeL). There is a great bucket list with several inspirational example stories that can be modified to fit your lifestyle in "The Joys of a Family Bucket List<https://research.ebsco.com/linkprocessor/plink?id=4e26fd97-497a-3f30-987e-d…>" from Parents from MasterFILE Complete<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…>. The eBook K-8 Collection<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…> includes several eBooks that can help check the “Learn origami” item off the list. Titles include Origami Dinosaurs: Easy & Fun Paper-Folding Projects<https://research.ebsco.com/linkprocessor/plink?id=74fb7225-45ef-3bbe-a6de-b…> and Easy Origami Toys<https://research.ebsco.com/linkprocessor/plink?id=282e4cd2-b15e-370b-bca1-e…>. Another fun item on that list is “Plant a seed. Check on it, and see it, often—and together.” "A Beginner’s Guide to Growing Veggies<https://research.ebsco.com/linkprocessor/plink?id=90a160d7-880c-3b45-b5d6-f…>" from Food Network Magazine in MasterFILE Complete<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…> can help with this task. From reading seed packet information to basic gardening tools, this article can get anyone started even if you aren’t sure you have a green thumb. If you want to discover more of Michigan, Michigan Blue in MasterFILE Complete<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…> published articles this spring to help adventurers check off some unique experiences. For example, those who love the water will want to check out "Superior Adventures: Guided five-Mile Kayaking Trips Take Upper Peninsula Paddlers Through the World-Famous Soo Locks<https://research.ebsco.com/linkprocessor/plink?id=019ac1f4-0a5d-3d40-b963-5…>," and "For Fun Rent a Pontoon: A 40-Plus-Mile Voyage Takes Boaters Through Michigan’s Longest Connected Chain of Lakes, Which Stretches Nearly Across the State’s Northern Tip<https://research.ebsco.com/linkprocessor/plink?id=f226333e-eda3-3c15-9456-7…>." My husband has a goal of visiting every major league baseball park. If venturing further afield is of interest, it will be made easier with the book series Travel Bucket Lists in the eBook Public Library Collection<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…>. Titles include information about exploring sports venues<https://research.ebsco.com/linkprocessor/plink?id=4c842c7f-6de9-351f-ab37-3…>, natural wonders<https://research.ebsco.com/linkprocessor/plink?id=a1cbf572-544b-3a9f-8299-b…>, outdoor expeditions<https://research.ebsco.com/linkprocessor/plink?id=0bddb70d-adfa-3912-8f47-8…>, archaeological sites<https://research.ebsco.com/linkprocessor/plink?id=650d83d7-b5ce-33c9-8878-1…>, and historical sites<https://research.ebsco.com/linkprocessor/plink?id=fb228fa4-2f96-3f04-8a0d-a…>. No matter if it’s an eco-friendly summer bucket list<https://research.ebsco.com/linkprocessor/plink?id=4d8f6125-25e3-3040-b9ab-1…> or a more manageable pocket list<https://research.ebsco.com/linkprocessor/plink?id=f9f31704-18da-30e2-9a78-b…>, the eResources from MeL<https://mel.org/az.php> are sure to get you dreaming of foods to eat, books to read, places to visit, activities to enjoy, and adventures to experience throughout each of Michigan’s beautiful seasons.
