Own or rent building?
by Bob Barringer 02 Apr '25

02 Apr '25

An informal survey for District Libraries only: 1. Do you own or rent your building? 2. If you own it, how did you acquire it? One dollar sale or donation from previous owner (city, county, village, township)? Market value purchase from the previous owner? Built or renovated using library funds? Donated by a charitable human or group of humans? Combination? 3. If you rent it, what is the rental fee? A one dollar annual or even monthly rental would be considered "free" rent. If you rent, who pays the property and liability insurance on the property? Who pays for utilities? Who pays for maintenance and upkeep? Does your rental cover any of these things or do you pay the rent and any or all of these other items separately? Thanks for your time. A Great Program About Baseball and the Detroit Tigers
by Julie Farkas 02 Apr '25

02 Apr '25

Hello Library Land! Novi Public Library hosted a wonderful event on April 1, 2025, that celebrated the 1984 Detroit Tigers. Both Tom Gage and Lance Parrish presented their new book The Enchanted Season. We had over 150 in attendance. They spoke for over an hour and engaged our audience from the moment they arrived. They sold their book for $20 and signed the books and more :) I highly recommend this event if you want to celebrate baseball and our hometown team! If you want more information about how to contact Tom Gage to set up a visit at your Library, let me know. Sincerely, Julie Farkas [image: image.png] "I am emailing at a time convenient to me, please do not feel obliged to reply to this email outside of your normal working hours."

SDL libraries mostly open
by Lisa Waskin 02 Apr '25

02 Apr '25

As of now, all of the Superior District libraries are open with power, with the exception of the Brevort Township Library in Moran. On Monday, for the first time since I came here over ten years ago, all eight of our libraries were closed because of this storm. I want to extend our support to all of the libraries throughout the state who have been hit hard by this weather. We know many had it much worse than we did. We have also had the bridge closed for most of the last three days because of falling ice, so books coming from up here are not able to get through to downstate and vice-versa. We appreciate everyone's understanding, patience, and cooperation as we all are dealing with some awful situations without power and phones and internet and hot showers. As another storm is moving in, the UP is facing food and fuel shortages now. Supportive words from many of you have been much appreciated. Warmest Regards, Lisa Lisa Waskin, District Director Superior District Library 541 Library Drive Sault Sainte Marie, MI 49783 Ph. by Lancaster, Cathy (MDE) 02 Apr '25

02 Apr '25

Gather 'Round the Table with Teens: A Food Literacy Workshop Food literacy is essential for teens to understand and learn about food in a positive way, including food skills and best food practices. Library staff that work with tweens & teens will benefit from this workshop designed to guide libraries to in turn support teens as they explore the impact of food on so many levels of their lives. Food Education Consultant Rebecca Antill will provide in-person workshops on how to plan and deliver nutrition & cooking programs for teens, featuring how to do so with minimal kitchen access. As a former librarian, Rebecca will offer a tailored learning experience that will equip library staff to offer food programming of all levels at their libraries. Basic health and safety information, kitchen classroom management, culinary skills and community partners will all be discussed as participants cook and share time together. Bring your own apron as this cooking workshop is hands-on and very interactive! Discord for Marketing and communications
by Katie Rothley 02 Apr '25

02 Apr '25

Hi all, Anyone who manages their library's marketing, public relations, and communications is invited to join our Marketing Discord <https://discord.gg/CzdBtdfX>. Here, you can share your marketing information and materials, ask questions, hear from others, and more. What is Discord? <https://discord.com/> It's an online platform (with a free app) that offers voice chat and instant messaging. It's easy to use and pretty straightforward. There are "channels" for organizing topics. Discord originally got its start through gaming: video gamers would use it to talk during gaming. Then it was adopted by RPG members for D&D and others. Let me know if you have any questions! Katie -- Katie Rothley, MLIS Marketing & Public Relations Librarian Northville District Library 212 West Cady Street Northville, MI 48167 (248) 349-3020 <callto:(248)+349-3020> ext. 221 https://northvillelibrary.org

library service disruptions
by Valerie Meyerson 02 Apr '25

02 Apr '25

Hi all - I'm sure you have seen on the news the horrible ice storm that has decimated the trees and foliage in the tip of the mitt area. Many communities have been without power since Saturday due to massive damage to substations and with temps going down into the teens, it has been chilly, dark, and unsettling. Petoskey power came up this morning, but we are still having trouble with phone lines. Many communities though are still without power. Data was very spotty throughout so getting any sort of news in our out was difficult. The damage to our trees is so incredibly sad. Good news is that of course our community pulled together and we have seen countless acts of kindness: Warming shelters feeding people and offering a place to charge devices; neighbors out hooking up generators for neighbors; friends clearing debris from the road; people sharing news and support; people bringing water to dry houses; people opening their homes up for hot showers, hardware stores opening in the dark for people to get fuel, batteries, generators, heaters. All in all, we are coming out the other side, and crossing our fingers that this next barrage of wind and rain won't take us down again. Anyway, if you have seen an issue with slow arrival of books from up here that is why. Boyne library opened yesterday; Petoskey Library is opening tomorrow, along with a few other libraries. Lots of lessons learned and we made it through. Valerie Meyerson (she/her) Library Director Petoskey District Library Please think of the environment before printing this message.
