great dance group

Hi all, Yesterday morning we hosted several members of the Bichini Bia Congo Dance Theater who performed for our Summer Reading Program participants and other community members. They were fantastic! Their drumming and dance is so energetic and authentic. They perform so well and involve the audience in call and response and dance moves. Just about everyone in the audience (about 190 people) got up and danced with them. I highly recommend them to you for any time of year and for all ages. Our VolunTeens loved them just as much as the younger kids and the grandparents. One parent earnestly thanked me for bringing them to our community. They were established in 1979 by Jean-Claude Biougilla Biza (Sompa) who teaches dance at the University of Michigan. The group promotes the preservation and practice of authentic Congolese Dance and African culture. We are a Lakeland Library Cooperative library using the Sierra platform. How many libraries accept cards at the desk, what system do you use? As part of the Michigan Reads! program, author Leslie Helakoski will be touring the state in September and October. She will be presenting to children at each public library and at a school at each location as well. The Children and Teen Services Committee of the Woodlands Library Cooperative is looking for a speaker who works with tweens and does successful tween programming after school. We are interested in your methods and practices of engaging tweens after school and tips and tricks you might suggest.in dealing with unruly behavior. We would also be interested in any program ideas. DALNET Educational Forum Friday, August 9, 9:30-Noon, Lunch Available Following Keynote from 12-1PM At Wayne State University, Undergraduate Library, Bernath Auditorium The Network Rebalances the Library: Patterns and Questions This presentation will look at a series of patterns and questions that are emerging as library organizations and services continue to be rebalanced by the impact of the network. The focus will be less on technology per se , and more on how broader network and digital shifts are affecting research, learning and engagement, and how those changes in turn make libraries think differently about how they organize, where they make investments, and what services are important. The presentation will look at such things as changing patterns of user engagement, collections focus, system provision, and skills. It will conclude by suggesting three broad patterns: a shift to engagement by better understanding and getting into workflows ; rightscaling infrastructure as collections and systems are sourced collaboratively and/or in the cloud; and how innovation and learning happens through institutional change. Lorcan Dempsey, Vice President, OCLC Research and Chief Strategist Keynote speaker Lorcan oversees OCLC Research and participates in strategic planning at OCLC. He is a librarian who began his career in public libraries in his native Dublin, Ireland. He joined OCLC in 2001 as Vice President, Research and was named Chief Strategist in 2004. Before moving to OCLC, Lorcan headed up national information services in the UK with JISC . Before that, he directed UKOLN , a national U.K. research and policy unit at the University of Bath. He is currently a member of the Cambridge University Library Visiting Committee and a member of the Advisory Board for the Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information ( CISTI ). In 2010 he received the National Federation of Advanced Information Services' ( NFAIS ) highest award, The Miles Conrad Award. Contact information online here .
