Library Directors, Time to get the ball rolling with the ExpressSOS CONNECT partnership! As promised, we are keeping things simple. Attached are two brief messages you can share with the public through any or all of your established communication channels (newsletter, website, social media, etc.). * The first attachment is an informational piece on our new partnership, should you wish to introduce it to your patrons. * The second is a critical election alert that we urge you to share between now and Election Day (Aug. 6). I have also attached an accompanying flyer about the election that can be printed and posted in your library, if you choose to do so. Participation in this partnership is, of course, optional though I will always label priority messages as critical to underscore our hope that all libraries will share those particular items with patrons. Your help in providing the most up-to-date Secretary of State information to the public is greatly appreciated. Going forward, I will only reach out to you when we have important news to communicate. Interfiling of genres

Beautiful afternoon all, We are taking a look at interfiling our adult Mystery, SciFI and Fantasy in the entire fiction collection by author. I would be interested in hearing: - experiences, thoughts, positives/negatives with this by any library that has or is considering doing this? - what kind of feedback did you get from your patrons, both before the process and after? - what tips/suggestions do you have for doing the move effectively and timely? question about a good reference book for building a website with Wordpress

Can anyone recommend a good reference book for building a website with Wordpress? I am considering changing our static HTML site (built with an aging Dreamweaver) to a Wordpress site, using a purchased theme. I've worked with Wordpress sites that were established by a designer, but have never built a site myself from scratch using Wordpress. Connect Michigan, Public Libraries Download Speed Survey

Accepting Credit/Debit Cards at the Library

You asked for my replies, so here they are without all of the gibberish... Not sure what things you want to have patrons pay for at the desk but LLC already accepts credit/debit cards. When we need to do a transaction at the desk we just ask the person’s permission (verbally) to access their “My account” and run the transaction. If they want to pay for something not already in Sierra, we add it to their fines before processing. If you don’t get a better answer from others, will be glad to talk to you about the process we use. Ou get a check from Lakeland every two months for the money collected. Up until about a year ago we were strictly cash/check as well. We decided to go with Square <https://squareup.com/> as the price was the most competitive for our transaction volume. They only charge 2.75% per swipe compared to the 4%-6% we were quoted by other vendors. The Square reader is free when you sign up and we purchased an iPad Mini, for it to plug in to. The patrons have been really excited about the new technology and we have been able to capture monies we have lost out on in the past. We have recently purchased a stylus for patrons to sign with as some had trouble using their fingers. Good luck in your quest and I hope this helps! We accept credit cards at Otsego District Library… We use a great program called Square. It works on our iPad. We have an iPad that is dedicated for this use at the checkout desk. There are no fees except that they take a small percentage (2.75%) from each transaction. https://squareup.com/ The money gets deposited directly into our bank account. We have been using Point and Pay for credit and debit card services. They work with public library and government organizations mainly. Their service doesn’t charge us a fee, but attaches a convenience fee of 3% to the user. It hasn’t been a problem for most of our patron who want to use the service. They do appreciate the convenience. http://www.pointandpay.com/ Try the Square. https://squareup.com/ Hello, You probably already have gotten the response you need for this question but my boss asked me to respond so here you go. One of the services provided through Lakeland is the ability for patrons to pay their fines online using credit or debit cards. This is done from their account in the Lakenet Card Catalog. Here in Lakeview (ML) we also will put fines on a patron card for faxing, copies, movie rentals if the only way they have to pay is with credit or debit and then we show them how to pay it from our card catalog stations. This does require that they have a library cardand we tell them they have to pay it there in the library if we are putting manual charges on their account. Lakeland will then send a report and check quarterly for all money paid online minus the administration-charge fee and you then divide the money into the appropriate categories for your budget. If you need more information on how to use this I will help if I can but contacting someone at the LLC Headquarters might help more.

need computer competency testing for library staff

Hello, everyone. We are looking for a way to test the computer competencies of current staff and new employee candidates. We have the tools to create online multiple-choice quizzes, but this would not give us a true assessment that a hands-on evaluation tool would give us. However, we have not been able to find such a tool. I have found some nice resources through EveryoneOn.org for self-evaluation and learning paths, but I'm not finding an evaluation tool that library administration can use to gauge a staff person's computer skills. Basically, we are looking for a computer skills competency test. Does anyone have any resources to help us with this? Or do you have any resource recommendations? The Oakland County Historical Resources Consortium is seeking an archival consultant or archival student to conduct Phase 2 of a comprehensive assessment and to implement the digitization priority action plan of the Oakland County Pioneer and Historical Society's Research Library Collection. The consultant will be expected to work collaboratively with both Consortium and Society Staff. The final written status report regarding work completed will be submitted to the Consortium's Board of Directors and to the Pioneer Society in both paper and electronic formats.
