Upcoming Genealogy events at the Pinckney Library
by Hope Siasoco 03 Apr '14

03 Apr '14

Dear library colleagues, we invite you, your colleagues, and community members to attend the second of the Pinckney Community Public Library's 4-part genealogy workshop series entitled: "A Bridge to the Past". (This workshop series is sponsored by the Friends of the Pinckney Library.) The series is once-a-month on Saturday at 10:30 am. Refreshments will be served. We ask that attendees call the library in advance to register so that we have a good count for the handouts that will be shared during each workshop. This Saturday, April 4th's session topic is: "USING THE GENEALOGYBANK DATABASE" -- Find out how you can use the library's newest database subscription to search historical newspapers. You'll never know what you'll find -- births, deaths, marriages, criminal activity! Newspapers are one of the best places to research family events and fill in the details of your ancestors' lives. Note: The Pinckney Library does not restrict by residency. All attendees for this Saturday's workshop will be given remote access to the library's subscription to the GenealogyBank database. Upcoming session topics are as follows: * Saturday, May 3, 2014 at 10:30am--WHAT ARE GENEALOGY WEBINARS?: Researching your family history means you'll probably be exploring areas of the country or world you weren't expecting. Webinars are a great tool for learning more about your genealogy without having to leave your home. We will go over the basics on how to find and participate in them. * Saturday, June 14, 2014 at 10:30am--SEEKINGMICHIGAN.ORG: Find out more about your Michigan ancestors by using the collections available from the Library of Michigan and the Archives of Michigan. Collections include death certificates from 1897-1920, state census records from 1884-1894, plat maps and Civil War records. This is a not-to-be missed resource! Attendees are encouraged to bring any questions or "brick walls" you have encountered in your research to each session. There will be time for help with your personal quest to uncover your family history. For more information, please visit the Pinckney Library's events website at http://www.pinckneylibrary.org/news-events/genealogy-4-part-workshop.pdf/vi… [1] or call the library at 734-878-3888 to register for each session. We look forward to seeing you then! by Laurie St. Laurent 02 Apr '14

02 Apr '14

Hello Michigan Colleagues, I have been tasked with exploring best practices in Library Self-Check. Here in Missouri, the St Charles City-County Library District has a home-grown ILS. We are planning to develop and launch Self-Check across our 12 Branches in the next 12 months. Please consider contacting me directly at the email provided below with answers to these few questions. Many thanks to all of you for continued consultancy. - How long did your planning process for Self-Check take? - Where are your Self-Check machines located? - Do you have receipt printers at the Self-Check locations? - What does your Self-Check screen(s) look like? - If you could change anything about your existing Self-Check, what would you change? - What percentage of your circulation is managed through Self-Check? - How did you teach your customers/patrons to use Self-Check? - How have you used the staff time freed up by implementation of Self-Check? Thanks again for your input. by Heather Ladiski 02 Apr '14

02 Apr '14

The deadline to register for next week's Securing Your Library in Troubling Times special program is today, April 2! This program has been approved for CEUs through the Library of Michigan and LEUs from the Indiana State Library You can attend this program in many ways! In person at the Lansing Community College West Campus, at one of our regional viewing parties throughout Michigan & Indiana or via live streaming video at your office! On April 10, 2014, in partnership with the Michigan State Police, the Cooperative Directors Association, & the Library of Michigan, MCLS will provide a program instructing and preparing librarians for a worst case scenario, an Active Shooter situation. The program will be held at the Lansing Community College West Campus and will be available through live web streaming for remote viewing either in your own office or at regional viewing parties throughout Michigan. Balancing the tenent of libraries as free and open spaces while ensuring the safety of staff and patrons is an ambitious challenge. There are bad actors and some so lost, they barely comprehend their actions. As stewards of our buildings, the charge for librarians is to prepare for the worst; arming ourselves first with knowledge, then acting accordingly. The morning session will consist of training from the Michigan State Police about personal safety and developing an Active Shooter policy and procedures. There will be a panel and presentation from librarians who have dealt with violence in their workplaces and/or undergone Active Shooter training in their library. The final session will be by Mark Alley who will present on the phases of critical incidents and crisis communication. This program is part of a series brought to you by the Cooperative Directors Association, the Library of Michigan and MCLS. This project is funded (in part) with a Library Services and Technology Act grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services administered by the Library of Michigan. For more information, including pricing and regional viewing party locations as well as to register, go to: https://members.mcls.org/workshops/viewcourse.html?id=351 If you are interested purchasing a group viewing rate for your staff to attend from one location, the cost is $249 for MCLS members or $349 for non-members.
