Hi Everyone, The MI PR Group's next meeting will be on Thursday, November 7th from 10am - 12pm at the Novi Public Library ( http://www.novilibrary.org/) . Our main discussion will be on methods of communication. Should we put all of our effort into social media, should we scale back on printed flyers, are e-newsletter effective, etc. Plus a chance to go around the table with local updates to gain great ideas from each other. The MI PR Group is designed as an informal PR group to work together and share our successes, learn from our non-successes and put our brains together to try and tackle issues and help all of our libraries. The Genesee District Library Rocks!

Hello all, The Genesee District Library has partnered with a local rock station and music store to provide free guitar lessons. The GDL is also using this opportunity to cross promote its Freegal music service. Patrons who sign up for a guitar lesson or download music from the library will be entered into a drawing. The prize is a Fender guitar autographed by rock group, Evanescence. The rock station provided the guitar as well as $4,000 worth of in-kind promotional support. Trenton M. Summary of Damaged Items Responses

The most common responses: * Take a digital picture and toss the damaged item. One clever response was to include this picture in a letter to the patron. * Put the damaged, especially if liquid damaged, in a plastic bag and hold from 1 to 6 months. * Have a clause in policy to address hygienic, mold or health hazard, that these items will have their picture taken and disposed of immediately. * Send a letter detailing the damage and the item. This provides proof the patron was contacted. * Most respondents stated their library did not have a formal policy. Hello! I am gathering any contact or other pertinent information on IT businesses/firms that can provide the following service(s): 1. Remote desktop/thin client hosting for a public network of 15-20 computers 2. Group the network into 2 sections: Internet & resource stations with different access levels and program/database availability 3. A plus would be patron initiated Internet signup and print release 4. Damaged items question

Wouldn't it be prudent to hold the item for a stated and reasonable period of time which would be conveyed to the patron at the time of notification of the damage and billing? Something like: ** Dear Patron, We've discovered that an item you returned recently (identify by call number, date of return, etc. or whatever other information that will make clear to the patron what the item is) was damaged when it was returned. Since there was no indication of damage when you borrowed the item, you will be billed for the (cost/value/purchase price/whatever you do). This item will be retained by the Library at (name location) for thirty (or whatever other reasonable time you determine) days should you wish to see the item and the damage to it. After that period, the item will be disposed of due to the damage. <You may wish to include a paragraph on how the charge to the patron is determined and how it can be paid and/or added to the patron's record until paid and the consequences of that> Thank you very much for your attention to this matter. The local library ** The question of whether this needs to be a policy adopted by the Board or an administrative policy is one for local determination. It probably should be denominated as a policy in writing and might contain an "escape" clause for items that do (or appear to) create a health hazard - e.g. blood or other bodily fluids - which could create a real health hazard for library personnel and/or the public. The notification to the patron should note that the item was disposed of/destroyed due to the apparent health hazard. A digital photo could/should be made and retained in that case. Michael D. Dear listserv members, For the last several years you've been receiving messages from me about the amazing programming and events happening in the ASCLA and RUSA divisions of ALA. It's been a joy to meet and communicate with many of you off-list, and to even meet some of you in person at conferences! I wanted to let you all know that you'll only be hearing from me a few more times over the next couple of weeks, as I've accepted a position at a Chicago-based organization that provides professional development resources and events for the nonprofit sector! Recommendations for DVD Resurfacing Machines

Hello, One of our member libraries is interested in purchasing a disk resurfacing machine for their DVDs, and they have noticed that the prices range widely from about $150 to $3000. Obviously, they would like something that will be dependable and sturdy enough to do the job without breaking the bank. It would be greatly appreciated if others would share information about what resurfacing machines so that we have a better idea of what might work best for them. I would be happy to compile results and share with the list if others might be interested in this as well.
