Cooking Books
by Brian Johnston 14 Oct '14

14 Oct '14

Hello Everyone, We are working with a local cooking school to put together a book discussion group. The program will feature a discussion of a cooking book, followed by a cooking class and/or demonstration based on recipes in the book. I am curious as to whether anyone has ideas for good books to use for such a program. Any input is appreciated. Thanks, Brian R. Non-traditional circulating collections
by Laura Orlowski 14 Oct '14

14 Oct '14

Hi all; My library is toying (sorry for the pun) with the idea of creating some non-traditional circulating collections (such as puzzles, board games, puppets, backpack sets, etc.) If your library has collections like these already in circulation, could you share your thoughts? In particular, here are a couple questions we have: 1. Puzzles/games - How do you check for missing pieces? If they come back with missing pieces, do you charge a fee? 2. Puppets - How do you sanitize/clean after circulating? We would appreciate any thoughts and comments on non-traditional circulating collections. Thanks, -Laura Orlowski, director Camden Twp. Re: [Michlib-l] series from the 1980's
by Mary Hanson 14 Oct '14

I read a lot of them in the late 50's. The ones I saw were hardcovers—turquoise. I got in trouble for reading them, too. We were only supposed read the books in our individual class rooms, but I discovered a stash of them in the teachers workroom. I would sneak in and climb up the shelves to reach the books. Someone caught most every time, but apparently I didn't care. I read three shelves worth. Mary Hanson, M.S.L., A.H.I.P. I was a children's librarian in the early part of my career and remember when those books were moved from biography to fiction. The versions I read had orange covers and the illustrations were done in black silhouettes. They have updated the series and there is a volume on Harry Houdini that came out in 1969 and was reissued in 1991. These books were published circa the early 1960s (or maybe earlier) and featured b&w line drawings illustrating the person's life. The covers featured the same artwork, and the background color for each book jacket was a different color. I remember reading the book on Eleanor Roosevelt (blue/gray, I think) and the one on Abe Lincoln (tan). Amelia Earhart was also in the series. Big help, right? I poked around with keyword searches in library catalogs, but of course these books are long gone from library shelves. No luck with the Amazon marketplace either. series from th 1980's
by Jennifer Hassell 13 Oct '14

13 Oct '14

Colleagues! I have a friend who is trying to track down an older book she read as a child (approx. 1983). Here is her description: I read a book from what I believe was a series of biographies. The book I read was about Harry Houdini and had, I believe, brown cover. The other books in the series all had covers of different colors. It's a long shot but does this sound familiar to anyone? Thanks! Jen Hassell Adult Services Librarian Farmington Community Library
