[Michigan Dept of Ed header] News Release Contact: Martin Ackley, Director of Public and Governmental Affairs, (517) 241-4395 Bill DiSessa, Spokesperson, (517) 335-6649 GVSU Libraries Earns 2014 State Librarian's Excellence Award October 13, 2014 LANSING - The 2014 State Librarian's Excellence Award for superior customer service has been awarded to Grand Valley State University (GVSU) Libraries, State Librarian Randy Riley announced today. Riley presents the annual award, including a prestigious trophy and $2,000 in privately donated funds, Thursday, October 16 during the Michigan Library Association's annual conference in Grand Rapids. "Year after year, Michigan's libraries consistently expand services and find new ways to serve their communities," said Riley. "The 2014 nominations demonstrate how creative, impactful and diverse libraries are across the state. Michigan libraries of all types are successfully focusing on what is unique about their communities and are successfully tailoring services to meet those evolving needs." The Library of Michigan Foundation and Library of Michigan (LM) present the State Librarian's Excellence Award and Citations of Excellence each year to highlight the importance of services provided by Michigan's libraries. Cromaine District Library in Hartland and the Dorr Township Library in Allegan County each get a trophy and $500 for winning a 2014 Citation of Excellence. The State Librarian's Excellence Award is sponsored by Roger Mendel and his late wife June Mendel. Gifts from Martin L. Gibbs, Carole Sorenson, and from Elaine M. Logan support the Citations of Excellence. "Grand Valley State University Libraries is thrilled to receive the 2014 State Librarian's Excellence Award," said Lee Van Orsdel, dean of GVSU Libraries. "Giving great service is a core commitment of our staff, and something we've worked hard to achieve. We are grateful to the Library of Michigan and Foundation for this wonderful affirmation of our efforts." GVSU Libraries serves a university community of more than 25,000 students at multiple campuses. The flagship campus in Allendale was chartered in 1960 and offers 200-plus areas of study. The Mary Idema Pew Library Learning and Information Commons opened in 2013. The staff has paired 21st Century facilities with an innovative and student-centered service ethic. The organization offers innovative new technologies and the opportunity to try them in a supportive space. These include the Knowledge Market; the presentation practice rooms; Technology Showcase; and Open Everything exhibit. Evaluation factors for the State Librarian's Excellence Award are: * Demonstrating that the library provides superior service to its customers and community in cost-effective manner; with a can-do attitude; and by always delivering on promises; and * Demonstrating the library's commitment to high standards of customer service through staff dealing with customers and the service community. In earning Citations of Excellence, Cromaine District Library of Hartland and Dorr Township Library of Allegan County also were recognized for their devotion to customer service. The Cromaine District Library is a Class V library in Hartland Township. It serves all of Hartland and parts of five other townships within the Hartland Consolidated School District. It also is a pilot for the Michigan Humanities Council's Muslim Voices grant, and was awarded its seventh Big Read grant. This entailed 45 events in less than six weeks, including a sponsored writing contest and a jazz concert series. Dorr Township Library is a Class III Library in Allegan County, serving a population of 7,500. The Library has undergone dramatic changes in the past year, providing signature programs such as the summer Comic Con; the annual Christmas concert; and DIY Your Spring Day. The building itself was completely transformed inside by volunteer help, moving every book and shelf, and adding a fireplace. It is now a comfortable place with easy-to-reach materials, a Book Sale Room, and a Community Art gallery. The library board agreed to continue to serve without pay when a few community members challenged the library's budget. They also are proposing to become a "teaching board" to help teens interact with local government. # # # The Library of Michigan is part of the Michigan Department of Education and is dedicated to providing the people of this State and their government one perpetual institution to collect and preserve Michigan publications, conduct reference and research and support libraries statewide. State Board of Education Approves Statement on School Libraries!
by Lester, Kathy 15 Oct '14

15 Oct '14

The State Board of Education approved a statement on support for school libraries yesterday (October 14th) at their Board meeting. [See below for the text of this statement.] I believe this is a great step forward in the effort to advocate for school libraries. Currently, Michigan ranks 46th nationally in the ratio of students per school librarian. In addition, based on National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) 4th grade reading scores, Michigan is one of only six states that has negative reading improvement. I've attached a press release. Library partners -- if you have a chance to share this information in your communities; please do so. I believe we all work together to promote reading, information and technology literacy in our students and in our communities. A huge thank you to Michelle Fecteau, State Board of Education member, who was instrumental in getting the resolution on the agenda and gaining support from other board members. Michelle also brought up the effort to add School Libraries as one of the Best Practice funding items with the Board. [You may hear more about this later.] Thank you to Cathy Woolford who over a year ago suggested to MAME that Michelle Fecteau might be a 'friend' to school libraries! Thank you to Dr. Kafi Kumasi from Wayne State University and Jeanna Walker from Portage Schools, who along with myself, spoke at public comment in support of the statement. Thank you to Karren Reish, Library of Michigan, for all of her support on this and other advocacy issues... and for providing Superintendent Flanagan with the right words to support the statement. Thank you to Randy Riley, State Librarian, for supporting the resolution with Superintendent Flanagan and the Board. Thank you also to previous State Librarian, Nancy Robertson, for taking the SL21 benchmarks to the State Board of Education last year. Thank you to Deb Biggs-Thomas, Dian Walster, Tim Staal, Tom and LInda Stream, Lisa Brakels for being at the meeting to support the resolution. Thank you to other library supporters who could not be at the meeting, but sent their support. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you for your support in getting the word out about the importance of strong school libraries! -Kathy Lester *RESOLUTION* *The Michigan State Board of Education recognizes that school library media centers provide Michigan's students and staff equitable access to print and digital resources critical to supporting 21st century teaching and learning.* *The Board further recognizes that certified library media specialists serve a critical role in increasing student achievement by supporting, collaborating, and co-teaching with classroom teachers in reading development, in integrating information and technology literacy skills into the content curriculum, and in meeting the expectations for student research set forth in the Common Core State Standards.* *The Library of Michigan, an office of the Michigan Department of Education, has developed the "SL21 Measurement Benchmarks for Michigan School Libraries for 21st Century Schools" and calls for school administrators and school librarians to use the SL21 measures to assess the quality of school library programs in individual buildings.* *The Board supports these efforts and supports a call for all elementary and secondary students to have ready access to a library in their school with appropriate resources, programming and certified staff.* *------* Kathy Lester, MLIS, MA MAME President 2014 School Librarian/Technology Integrationist East Middle School, Plymouth-Canton Schools *2012 **State Librarian's Excellence Award Winner* <http://www.michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan/0,2351,7-160-19270_20585-289712--…> kathyL(a)mimame.org cell: 810-333-5873

Library bags responses
by Patricia Braden 15 Oct '14

15 Oct '14

Thanks to everyone who responded to my request about library bags. Most of you suggested using Better Containers (www.librarybags.com) and a few suggested going green and getting some canvas bags to sell as a fundraiser. I have been wanting to go that route for awhile, but hadn't found a good vendor. BC sells those too and the cost is low. Looks like we are going green and raising funds too! Thanks again, Patty Patty Braden Library Director Romulus Public Library 11121 Wayne Road Romulus, MI 48174 (734) 942-7589 www.romulus.lib.mi.us

Library bags
by Patricia Braden 15 Oct '14

15 Oct '14

Hello all, With the rainy weather season upon us, we are considering getting some plastic bags to use for patron checkouts. We have thought about getting some of the white plastic bags that say "thank you, have a nice day" on them, but I'm not sure how sturdy they are for books. The plastic draw string bags from Demco are expensive and we go through them so fast. Does anyone have any suggestions? I would like something nicer than used Walmart bags, which we are currently using. Thanks!
