LM4X has a new name thanks to Carolyn Sherill

Greetings, I'd like to thank everyone who participated in the naming contest for the Library of Michigan's newsletter. We're changing our publishing schedule from 4X a year to 6X and so the title "LM4X" wasn't going to work for us any longer. We asked the library community for suggestions through the newsletter as well as on Michlib-l. Sony (SPE and SME) and Freegal (Library Ideas, LLC) Music and Movies

All, No doubt you've heard and/or read the recent news regarding Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE). Here is the most recent NYT article I've seen: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/12/09/business/media/as-more-documents-appear-s… I am sending this post on account Library Ideas, LLC is a library vendor for Freegal Music http://www.freegalmusic.com/ and Freegal Movies http://freegalmovies.com/index Freegal Music offers the entire Sony Music Entertainment (SME) catalog to libraries. Freegal Movies does not make the Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) catalog available to libraries. Earlier today I reached out to the president of Library Ideas, LLC, a person whom I've known for a long time, to ask for his thoughts regarding this matter. He noted as to how Freegal does not have any Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) offerings in its library catalog, and that SPE is a separate company (although also a subsidiary of Sony) from SME. He also said that Library Ideas, LLC does not share any information with SME other than the total number of checkouts, so that even if there had been a data breach of SME there really wouldn't be any data to breach. Finally, as would be the case with most any company president, he would not put his thoughts into writing without attorney review, so what I am sharing here is a transcript of our conversation. I have not contacted other vendors that may (or may not) be involved in the distribution of SPE and/or SME content to libraries. Are you familiar with collection development issues and e-resources licenses? Then you owe it to yourself to look at the Midwest Collaborative for Library Services. MCLS is looking for an extremely well-organized, highly motivated individual to be Assistant Manager of our Member Services team. As part of our four person team, you will manage licenses from dozens of vendor partners and negotiate to get the best terms and conditions for MCLS member libraries. You will assist members with new and renewal subscriptions and inform them about any changes in their licenses. You will oversee the Member Services section of the MCLS website and keep it current with all the latest information about vendors, prices, and special offers. It’s a challenging and exciting opportunity. The right person will be an effective multitasker, highly organized, and detail oriented. You should be knowledgeable about the latest trends in collection development and e-resources. Experience with database or e-journal license negotiations is a big plus. You need to be a people person with the skills to get along with people in a variety of positions, from sales reps to front-line librarians to department heads and directors. A sense of humor and an ability to learn on the job are critical to success. With the anticipated retirement of the Member Services Manager in July 2015, the Assistant Manager will be in a very strong position for promotion. FINAL Reminder: Letters about Literature program

The Letters about Literature program deadlines are coming up (Dec. 15th for Level III and Jan. 15th for Level I and II). We hope to have your teen and tween patrons participate! >>>>>>>>>> The Library of Michigan is announcing the 2015 Letters about Literature<http://www.read.gov/letters/> program. We are the Michigan host for this national program from the Library of Congress. It is reading-writing contest that invites readers in grades 4 through 12 to write letters to authors of books that have changed their lives. This program gives students the opportunity to reflect deeply on a book. As readers, they come to understand how literature is more than assignment, but also a life changing experience. Children and teens can participate on their own or as part of a library or class project. We have posted an explanatory letter and a sample entry form at www.michigan.gov/youthlibraryservices/<http://www.michigan.gov/youthlibraryservices/>. The 2015 letters will be due in two waves.
