Bibliotherapy Suggestions (9 year old girl)

Hi! I've been asked to identify books for a 9 year old girl dealing with anxiety, loss and stress, possibly linked to her adoption. She likes to read and her counselor suggested bibliotheraphy. Several years ago, I taught children's literature so I know there are books out there on this topic, but I'm not familiar with the current titles. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Workforce Skills for 21st Century Success

Hi Eunice: I was intrigued to see this new resource (brought to our attention about a month ago). We are using some of the modules found in the Workforce Skills for 21st Century Success <http://galesupport.com/migeoipcheck/migeoipcheck-lxpress3.php?database=CEN> for our student employees. However, trying to take the direct path and accessing "Learning Express Library" we could not find the Workforce Skills resource. Is it possible to include the it WITHIN the available options for Learning Express Library? We did find it (eventually) under the available databases. Just an idea. . . Thank you!!! E-Rate Training Around the State: Register Now

The Library of Michigan is able to address the need for regional E-rate training this fall with help from the Michigan Department of Education (MDE). First, our long-time consultant Linda Schatz will be at the Library of Michigan on November 20th for an all-day session on E-rate. The focus will be on updates and changes to the program. It is not specifically for newbies. Time: 8:00 - 4:30. Cost: $35. This session will solely contain library-specific information. Participation is limited to staff from Michigan libraries. In addition, the Michigan Department of Education has graciously invited Michigan library staff to attend the regional training that they are providing in six locations during October and November. Individuals well-versed in E-rate will be presenting the training along with a representative from E-rate Central. At each location, there will be a two-hour session on the changes coming to E-rate in the morning from 10:10 to 12:10: "Come learn how the Universal Service Fund (USF) E-rate program is evolving in its Funding Year 2015. This funding year is anticipated to be the first of several years in which there are going to be changes that will dramatically affect the E-rate program. Better known as E-rate 2.0 these changes will transform the program. Anticipate positive and negative impacts to the scope and what services are eligible for funding" And a two-hour session in the afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00: "designed for those who are new to the E-rate process or those who would like to rejuvenate their skills. This training will go over the basics of the form 470 and 471 and also the changes for the 2015 funding year." You are welcome to attend morning, afternoon, or both. Training is free to attendees. It promises to be a fun, fascinating, and informative visit to the largest university campus-based nuclear science laboratory in the United States The National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory is the largest university campus-based nuclear science laboratory in the United States. Today, NSCL is the nation’s flagship rare isotope user facility, serving over 700 researchers from more than 20 countries. It is also the nation’s largest university-campus-based nuclear science laboratory, producing approximately 10% of the nation’s Ph.D.s in nuclear physics and ranked the #1 nuclear physics graduate program by U.S. News & World Report. The laboratory employs more than 100 students and provides them with access to top-level research and educational experience. Riley presents the annual award, including a prestigious trophy and $2,000 in privately donated funds, Thursday, October 16 during the Michigan Library Association's annual conference in Grand Rapids. "Year after year, Michigan's libraries consistently expand services and find new ways to serve their communities," said Riley. "The 2014 nominations demonstrate how creative, impactful and diverse libraries are across the state. Michigan libraries of all types are successfully focusing on what is unique about their communities and are successfully tailoring services to meet those evolving needs." The Library of Michigan Foundation and Library of Michigan (LM) present the State Librarian's Excellence Award and Citations of Excellence each year to highlight the importance of services provided by Michigan's libraries. Cromaine District Library in Hartland and the Dorr Township Library in Allegan County each get a trophy and $500 for winning a 2014 Citation of Excellence. The State Librarian's Excellence Award is sponsored by Roger Mendel and his late wife June Mendel. Gifts from Martin L. Gibbs, Carole Sorenson, and from Elaine M. Logan support the Citations of Excellence. "Grand Valley State University Libraries is thrilled to receive the 2014 State Librarian's Excellence Award," said Lee Van Orsdel, dean of GVSU Libraries. "Giving great service is a core commitment of our staff, and something we've worked hard to achieve. We are grateful to the Library of Michigan and Foundation for this wonderful affirmation of our efforts." GVSU Libraries serves a university community of more than 25,000 students at multiple campuses. The flagship campus in Allendale was chartered in 1960 and offers 200-plus areas of study. The Mary Idema Pew Library Learning and Information Commons opened in 2013. The staff has paired 21st Century facilities with an innovative and student-centered service ethic. The organization offers innovative new technologies and the opportunity to try them in a supportive space. These include the Knowledge Market; the presentation practice rooms; Technology Showcase; and Open Everything exhibit. Evaluation factors for the State Librarian's Excellence Award are: * Demonstrating that the library provides superior service to its customers and community in cost-effective manner; with a can-do attitude; and by always delivering on promises; and * Demonstrating the library's commitment to high standards of customer service through staff dealing with customers and the service community. In earning Citations of Excellence, Cromaine District Library of Hartland and Dorr Township Library of Allegan County also were recognized for their devotion to customer service. The Cromaine District Library is a Class V library in Hartland Township. It serves all of Hartland and parts of five other townships within the Hartland Consolidated School District. It also is a pilot for the Michigan Humanities Council's Muslim Voices grant, and was awarded its seventh Big Read grant. This entailed 45 events in less than six weeks, including a sponsored writing contest and a jazz concert series. Dorr Township Library is a Class III Library in Allegan County, serving a population of 7,500. The Library has undergone dramatic changes in the past year, providing signature programs such as the summer Comic Con; the annual Christmas concert; and DIY Your Spring Day. The building itself was completely transformed inside by volunteer help, moving every book and shelf, and adding a fireplace. It is now a comfortable place with easy-to-reach materials, a Book Sale Room, and a Community Art gallery. The library board agreed to continue to serve without pay when a few community members challenged the library's budget. State Board of Education Approves Statement on School Libraries!

The State Board of Education approved a statement on support for school libraries yesterday (October 14th) at their Board meeting. [See below for the text of this statement.] I believe this is a great step forward in the effort to advocate for school libraries. Currently, Michigan ranks 46th nationally in the ratio of students per school librarian. In addition, based on National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) 4th grade reading scores, Michigan is one of only six states that has negative reading improvement. I've attached a press release. Library partners -- if you have a chance to share this information in your communities; please do so. I believe we all work together to promote reading, information and technology literacy in our students and in our communities. A huge thank you to Michelle Fecteau, State Board of Education member, who was instrumental in getting the resolution on the agenda and gaining support from other board members. Michelle also brought up the effort to add School Libraries as one of the Best Practice funding items with the Board. [You may hear more about this later.] Thank you to Cathy Woolford who over a year ago suggested to MAME that Michelle Fecteau might be a 'friend' to school libraries! Thank you to Dr. Kafi Kumasi from Wayne State University and Jeanna Walker from Portage Schools, who along with myself, spoke at public comment in support of the statement. Thank you to Karren Reish, Library of Michigan, for all of her support on this and other advocacy issues... and for providing Superintendent Flanagan with the right words to support the statement. Most of you suggested using Better Containers (www.librarybags.com) and a few suggested going green and getting some canvas bags to sell as a fundraiser. I have been wanting to go that route for awhile, but hadn't found a good vendor. BC sells those too and the cost is low. Looks like we are going green and raising funds too!
