FOIA Packet from Library of Michigan - Developing Documents and Summaries for the 2015 FOIA Amendments
by White, Shannon (MDE) 18 Jun '15

18 Jun '15

This message was originally sent out on Monday afternoon to library directors and cooperatives. If you did not receive this information at that time and are a district library needing FOIA information to create policies, please review the message below. You may find information to assist you in the process. Other library types may find the information useful as well though they should consult with their local FOIA coordinator for guidance. Shannon Dear Library Director, Attached you will find a packet of information from the Library of Michigan titled "Developing Documents and Summaries for the 2015 FOIA Amendments." The samples are adapted from documents developed by and for State of Michigan state government agencies. They are primarily intended as information for district libraries and library cooperatives, but may be helpful to other types of public libraries in processing FOIA requests. For libraries under the umbrella of a municipality or county, please consult with the FOIA Coordinator for that local government entity for guidance. All libraries should discuss specific concerns or circumstances surrounding FOIA requests and the 2015 Amendments with their legal counsel. Any questions on the following materials may be directed to Kimberly Koscielniak at the Library of Michigan. The information attached summarizes the 2015 Amendments to the Michigan Freedom of Information Act, MCL 15.231 et seq, or "FOIA," which require a public body to post on a website, or otherwise make accessible to the public, specific information on how the public body processes a request for public records and assesses fees. Public libraries are included in the definition of "public bodies," and must follow the Amendments, which become effective on July 1, 2015. Included in this material are samples of three documents that a public body is required to develop and make accessible to the general public: 1. The public body's FOIA Procedures and Guidelines (Part II) 2. A fee itemization form to be included in the FOIA Procedures and Guidelines (Part III) 3. A written summary of the procedures and guidelines that is easy-to-read (Part IV) You can also find the amending act included within the attached PDF packet. MeL Minute - Turfgrass Information File database
by Borrelli, Eunice (MDE) 18 Jun '15

18 Jun '15

Hi all, When I first moved to Michigan, I heard mention of the Turfgrass Library at Michigan State University. Turfgrass wasn't a term I was familiar with and I wondered what a library devoted to it would consist of. Since then, I've learned - Number 1, that Turfgrass is an area of planted grasses (think golf courses, sports fields, parks, landscape design, roadsides); Number 2, that MSU is known world-wide for their extensive resources of publications, studies, and research on this topic; and, Number 3, that the Turfgrass Information File<http://www.galesupport.com/migeoipcheck/migeoipcheck-msu.php> (TGIF) is a MeL Database. Established in 1983 as a cooperative project of the United States Golf Association and the Michigan State University Libraries' Turfgrass Information Center, TGIF provides bibliographic and descriptive records of all types of work related to Turfgrass culture. So, what kind of information might you look for in this MeL database? Some examples include: grub control, fertilization, winterkill, invasive plants, and pesticides residue. Parks and grounds managers, landscapers, and golf course managers are among the businesses and organizations in your community who might be interested in the specialized information found in the Turfgrass Information File<http://www.galesupport.com/migeoipcheck/migeoipcheck-msu.php>. Michigan residents or Michigan library access only. MeL Minutes are brought to you by the Library of Michigan. Want more information on MeL? Stay tuned for next week's MeL Minute available on many Michigan library listservs, email us at contact(a)mel.org<mailto:contact@mel.org> or visit mel.org<http://mel.org/>. We encourage you to share MeL Minutes with your public service colleagues. Eunice Eunice C. Borrelli Michigan eLibrary Internet Librarian, Library of Michigan/Michigan Dept. of Education 702 W. Has anyone received a message from Smartprocure for all your libraries invoices and vendors for the last five years to upload electronically to their database. I called the person who sent the e-mail and she told me they just collect millions of public records-just because. Anyone experience this type of request before? Thanks for your responses, Deb Deborah L. Bose, Director Grant Area District Library 122 Elder St. Grant, MI 49327 231-834-5713 t 231-834-9705 f

community scanning project
by Marsh, Nyama 18 Jun '15

18 Jun '15

Hello Everyone, My library is working on applying for a grant which will enable us to purchase scanners and pay experts, so we can host local community heritage days in which citizens bring in their historic photos and documents for scanning. The items will then be coded with metadata and hosted online as a local history collection (with permission by item owners). It is difficult to set the budget since the amount of items we will receive is unknown. Have any of you hosted a similar event? If so, how many people and items did you receive? What did you do with them in the long run? Did you turn them into programs or a collection or just give a digital copy to the owner? Also, if you are willing to share a copy of your budget and proposal that would be awesome! Thanks for any guidance you can provide. You all are always very helpful. Have a wonderful day, Nyama Nyama Y.
