Question
by Joann Crater 01 Jul '15

01 Jul '15

Hi.Here we go again. Is there anything that requires a district library's fiscal year to be a certain time? Like townships are April 1 - March 31, cities are July 1 - June 30..... I understand that we would have to change our library agreement with the state librarian but wouldn't it make sense if your millage comes in starting Dec. 1st, your board member terms are up Dec. 1st, to make your fiscal year to be either Dec - Nov or Jan - Dec? If anyone knows the good, the bad, the ugly on this, please reply!!!(ah, Dec.1st also starts the 25 days of Christmas on ABC family....just thought I would throw that out there!!) Thanks for all your amazing help in all my many gray areas!!!!Joann @ Hudson

Re: [Michlib-l] big box stores gaming the tax system
by Ellen Moore 01 Jul '15

01 Jul '15

I'm not sure that this is an issue we can solve as consumers. Corporate entities are only behaving like corporate entities when they seek out lower taxes. Tax tribunals, on the other hand, should be considering how lost revenues will effect the good of the state when they allow corporations huge property tax breaks as if they were closed and pay back tax money to them that has already been spent. The state should be considering the good of populace, and they aren't doing that when they decide not to collect taxes from profitable businesses. So I think it is up to us as citizens, not us as consumers, to try to find the answer to this problem. We need to voice our concern to the politicians that appoint the tribunals and the politicians who create the laws that regulate corporations. And in order to get their attention, we need to broadcast our outrage so that everyone understands what is going on here. Ellen Moore Peter White Public Library Marquette

Celebrate Patriot Week!
by Christine Hage 01 Jul '15

01 Jul '15

Please forgive me if I've already posted this. Patriot Week renews America’s spirit by celebrating the First Principles, Founding Fathers and other Patriots, vital documents and speeches, and flags that make America the greatest nation in world history. Many of our current holidays have become overly commercialized or have lost their deeper meaning. We need to invigorate our appreciation and understanding of America’s spirit. The week is anchored by the key dates of September 11 (the anniversary of the terrorists attacks) and September 17 (Constitution Day, the anniversary of the signing of the Constitution). Co-created by Michigan Judge Michael Warren and his then 10-year-old daughter Leah, Patriot Week has captured the imagination and support of citizens across the nation. Libraries can participate by sponsoring book displays, reading lists, reading groups, book discussions, author presentations, panel discussions, and similar activities connected to the themes of Patriot Week. For more information, visit www.PatriotWeek.org <http://www.patriotweek.org/> or contact Patriot Week at cbassett(a)patriotweek.org.
