New Book Examines the Role of Superheroes in Pop Culture
by Mark Edlitz 10 Jul '15

10 Jul '15

Hi, My name is Mark Edlitz and I'm a writer. I've written about pop culture for a number of publications including The Huffington Post and Los Angeles Times Hero Complex. I've also worked as a writer/producer for National Geographic's *Brain Games.* *How to Be a Superhero*, my book about superheroes and the actors who play them, just launched. David Mamet wrote the foreword. I was wondering if you would consider ordering the book for your library. My aunt (who works at a library) told me that many libraries are doing a summer reading program based on "heroes." She thought my book would be relevant to all your patrons and that it fits all the inter-related themes -- Every Hero Has a Story, Unmask! and Escape the Ordinary. Even if you're not doing this particular program I think the book might be of interest. The pre-pub press for *How to Be a Superhero* has been excellent: "This superpowered collection of more than 40 original in-depth interviews explores the role of superheroes in pop culture.... In his impressive debut, Edlitz interviews actors who have played parts in shaping modern America's quintessential mythologies: the superhero universe.... [The author's] lengthy introductions to each interview are packed with enough background info and trivia to please even hard-core fanboys.... Edlitz's insightful questions also explore weightier topics such as religion, mythology, race, and the nature of heroism.... [An] all-out victory." -- Kirkus "Edlitz probes to the heart of the matter with these performers, getting their take on the philosophy of their particular superhero...With a full slate of interviews, Edlitz charts the influence of the culture of the times on the portrayals of superheroes, as well as the evolution of women’s roles." -- Foreword Reviews "How to be a Superhero makes for great reading, Edlitz's questioning smart and insightful. His subjects play along well, giving considered and equally insightful answers. A cracking read full of great personalities and personality." -- Starburst Magazine "As complete a source as one might hope to find." -- ComicMix How to Be a Superhero is available through Ingram and Amazon <http://www.amazon.com/How-Be-Superhero-Mark-Edlitz-ebook/dp/B00U2ZFE6I/ref=…> . This is my first book and it's being published by an independent publisher. So, we could really use your support! I can be reached via MarkEdlitz(a)gmail.com. I look forward to hearing from you. Best wishes, Mark

Library Marketing and Communications Conference
by Heidi Nagel 09 Jul '15

09 Jul '15

Hello Michigan Libraries! This is an exciting opportunity for those of us who are involved every day in promoting and advocating for our libraries, and who among us isn't!? We will be making our big announcement about keynote speakers soon, so I'll follow-up with additional information next week! Thank you for your consideration of this sure-to-be-fantastic conference! Library Marketing and Communications Conference Dallas, TX, Nov 3-4, 2015 Crowne Plaza Dallas Near Galleria-Addison Organized by the Library Marketing and Communications Group Sponsored by Amigos Library Services ABOUT THE CONFERENCE This conference is designed for library employees of any level who are involved in marketing, communication, public relations, social media, and outreach in academic, public, and special libraries. The sessions will explore issues that are important for this niche of library work, and the conference will include time for attendees to network and to discuss mutual challenges. This new event is an outgrowth of four previous meetings. Kieserman Media began the Association of Library Communications and Outreach Professionals (ALCOP) and ran conferences of the same name near Philadelphia in 2011 and 2012. That group ran the same basic show, renamed the Library Communications Conference (LCC), near Philly in 2013 and in New Jersey in 2014. When its leader, Bob Kieserman, decided to stop organizing the conferences, a group of former attendees decided to reboot and relaunch them. Those of us in the budding Library Marketing and Communications (LMC) group believe that library workers deserve a small event that's geared specifically toward the necessary work of marketing communication (MarCom), which includes public relations, social media, branding, and related topics. We feel that, if more library employees improved these skills, then all types of libraries would be in better positions to have their messages heard and to have their services well-used and appreciated. The Program Committee of the Library Marketing and Communications Conference (LMCC) is interested in receiving proposals for presentations that apply the latest trends, best practices, and research in the field while providing practical tips that can be immediately applied to any library's communication and marketing program. CALL FOR PRESENTATION PROPOSALS Submission Deadline: July 15 Notification of Presentation Approval: August 10 Fill out Form here: http://bitly.com/lmcc2015 For more information about the conference: http://www.amigos.org/lmcc Although not limited to these areas, topics of interest include: 1. Public Innovators Lab for Libraries: Oct. 14-16, 2015
by David Votta 09 Jul '15

09 Jul '15

This is a great opportunity. Please share widely. I attended the lab in 2013 and it remains the single best professional development experience I have ever had. If anyone has questions I am happy to field them. Thank you, David David Votta Community Engagement Librarian Midwest Collaborative for Library Services (MCLS) Lansing, MI & Indianapolis, IN Phone: (800) 530-9019 ext 122 Phone: (517) 492-3822 Fax: (517) 492-3886 vottad(a)mcls.org ALA and the Harwood Institute for Public Innovation have just announced our 2015 Public Innovators Lab for Libraries. This year's training will be held October 14-16 in Detroit. Please join us! See below for more info or register online: http://www.cvent.com/events/the-harwood-ala-public-innovators-lab-for-libra… ***** ALA, Harwood Institute announce Public Innovators Lab for Libraries community engagement training opportunity http://www.ala.org/news/press-releases/2015/07/ala-harwood-institute-announ… The American Library Association (ALA) and The Harwood Institute for Public Innovation have announced an intensive three-day training opportunity to help libraries strengthen their role as agents of positive change in their communities. The Public Innovators Lab for Libraries will be held Oct. 14 - 16 at the DoubleTree Detroit Downtown – Fort Shelby. Librarians, community partners and stakeholders in libraries of all types — public, academic, school and specialty libraries — are encouraged to register. Through discussions, hands-on activities and collaborations with like-minded library professionals, participants will learn to: tap libraries' natural values to contribute to the greater good and bring their communities together; surface people’s shared aspirations for their communities through conversations and help bring them to life; and use that knowledge to create programs and strategies to address challenges people care about and make the community stronger at the same time. Participants must register online by Oct. 2. The cost is $1,495 for the first person from an organization and $995 for each additional person. Team participation is encouraged. For more information, visit ala.org/LTC. The ALA-Harwood Institute partnership is based on the idea that libraries, by virtue of their trusted position in their communities, are uniquely suited to help solve challenges of all types, from literacy to drug epidemics to distrust in government. The Public Innovators Lab for Libraries will be based on Harwood’s “turning outward” approach, which emphasizes making the community the reference point for getting things done. This shift in orientation is achieved through practical steps: taking measures to better understand communities; being proactive about community issues; and putting community ambitions first. The lab was recently enhanced to be even more hands-on, applied and practical. In May, nearly 300 Texas librarians participated in three new labs through a partnership between The Harwood Institute and the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. Libraries and library professionals around the country are already using The Harwood Institute’s approach to: lead conversations with community members to better understand the kind of community they want and the challenges they see; bring stakeholders together to get past gridlock and work on issues that matter to people; improve library programming to be more relevant and connected to the struggles people face; and better connect with underserved and often invisible populations in communities. The Public Innovators Lab for Libraries is offered as part of the ALA’s Libraries Transforming Communities (LTC) initiative. The initiative addresses a critical need within the library field by developing and distributing new tools, resources and supportfor librarians to engage with their communities in new ways. About the American Library Association The American Library Association is the oldest and largest library association in the world, with approximately 58,000 members in academic, public, school, government and special libraries. The mission of the American Library Association is to provide leadership for the development, promotion and improvement of library and information services and the profession of librarianship in order to enhance learning and ensure access to information for all. About The Harwood Institute The Harwood Institute for Public Innovation is a national nonprofit organization based in Bethesda, Md., that teaches and coaches people and organizations to solve pressing problems and change how communities work together. The institute is guided by Richard C. Harwood, whose transformational work during the past 25 years has spread to thousands of communities nationally and worldwide, from small towns to large cities. _______________ Sarah Ostman Communications Manager Public Programs Office American Library Association 312-280-5061

Michigan Activity Pass (MAP) Usage Stats: Over the Top!!!
by Jim Flury 09 Jul '15

09 Jul '15

All, The Library Network (TLN) is very pleased and proud and excited to announce that earlier this morning, thanks to the generosity of our cultural partners, the promotional efforts of our sponsors, the never ending, often late at night, enhancements made by our software developer/programmer/engineer, and a whole bunch of hard work by Michigan's librarians, we have SURPASSED LAST YEAR'S TOTAL NUMBER OF MICHIGAN ACTIVITY PASS CHECKOUTS! Apologies for the all caps shout, but I think that's pretty cool! Yes, Michigan's library patrons have now checked out, in the middle of the eighth week of Statewide MAP Year 3, more MAP passes than was the case in the full 52 weeks of MAP Statewide Year 2, which ran May 24, 2014 through May 23, 2015. The pass MAP reservation that put us "over the top" was reserved at Rochester Hills Public Library http://www.rhpl.org/ for the Detroit Institute of Arts http://www.dia.org/ Yea for RHPL and DIA! http://michiganactivitypass.info Just as gratifying to us, if not more so, than the much higher utilization rate of the program, is the fact that we are seeing MAP checkouts all across the state, at libraries where we've never seen them before. MAP and its predecessor program were always extremely popular in the metro Detroit area. It has taken a couple of years for statewide MAP to really take off, but the program is now well on its way to becoming the truly statewide project we envisioned when we launched that trial MAP balloon in May, 2013. Onward and upward! Thank you for your support and promotion of the Michigan Activity Pass program. Sincerely, Jim Flury Jim Flury Technical Services Manager The Library Network 41365 Vincenti Court Novi, MI 48375 248-536-3100 x133 Fax 248-536-3098 jflury(a)tln.lib.mi.us
